Israel and Hamas prepare for negotiations in Egypt ahead of possible Gaza ceasefire

CAIRO (AP) — Israel and Hamas prepared for indirect negotiations in Egypt on Monday, as hopes for a possible ceasefire in Gaza grew following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement that a hostage release could be announced this week.

Tuesday marks two years since the Hamas attack that sparked the current war. President Donald Trump welcomed Hamas’s statement accepting some elements of the U.S. peace plan, which Israel has also expressed support for.

Under the plan, Hamas would release the remaining 48 hostages—about 20 believed to be alive—within three days. In addition, Hamas would relinquish power and disarm.

The delegation led by top Israeli negotiator Ron Dermer is scheduled to leave Monday for talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, according to Netanyahu’s office. An Egyptian official, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters, confirmed that the Hamas delegation had arrived and said U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff is joining the talks.

Discussions will focus on the proposed exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, Egypt’s foreign ministry said.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the situation as “the closest we’ve come to getting all of the hostages released.” Speaking on ABC’s *This Week*, he outlined two phases following Hamas’s acceptance of Trump’s framework: the release of hostages and Israel’s withdrawal in Gaza to the “yellow line,” where it stood in August.

Rubio told CBS that Hamas should release hostages as they are ready, and emphasized that bombardment needs to end to facilitate the release.

The U.S. plan also addresses Gaza’s future. In a text exchange with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Trump warned that there would be “complete obliteration” if Hamas remained in power there. Trump also texted that Netanyahu supports ending the bombing and achieving peace in Gaza but added, “soon on the rest.”

### Support for a Ceasefire Grows

Israeli government spokeswoman Shosh Badrosian told journalists that Netanyahu is in “regular contact” with Trump and stressed that the talks in Egypt “will be confined to a few days maximum.”

“I hope that we are closest to a hostage deal since the (ceasefire) deal in January,” said Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar in a speech.

Meanwhile, anxious relatives of hostages gathered near Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem, some urging Trump to continue applying pressure. Israel’s recent military offensive in Gaza City has heightened fears for the hostages’ safety.

“We cannot allow such a historic agreement to be sacrificed again,” said Michel Ilouz, father of hostage Guy Ilouz.

Across several European cities and other locations, hundreds of thousands marched in support of Palestinians. The foreign ministers of eight Muslim-majority countries issued a joint statement welcoming steps toward a possible ceasefire. They also emphasized their commitment to the return of the Palestinian Authority to Gaza, the unification of Gaza and the West Bank, and reaching an agreement leading to a “full Israeli withdrawal” from Gaza.

Rubio told ABC that decisions regarding a governing structure or international group to manage Gaza can occur simultaneously with the initial phase of the ceasefire.

“That’s the part that I think is going to be a little tougher to work through, but that’s what’s going to provide permanency to the end of the conflict,” he said.

### At Least 12 Killed in Gaza on Sunday

Although Trump ordered Israel to stop bombing Gaza, residents and local hospitals reported that strikes continued across the territory.

Israeli government spokeswoman Badrosian confirmed that “certain bombings have actually stopped inside of the Gaza Strip.” However, Israel’s military chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, warned, “if the political effort does not succeed, we will return to fight.”

At least eight people were killed Sunday in multiple strikes in Gaza City, according to Shifa Hospital, which received the casualties. A security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the strikes targeted Hamas militants posing a threat to Israeli troops.

Additionally, four people were shot dead near an aid distribution site in the southern city of Rafah, according to Nasser Hospital. Israel’s military denied involvement in that incident.

Doctors Without Borders confirmed the death of colleague Abed El Hameed Qaradaya, who was wounded in an attack last Thursday that killed another colleague in Gaza.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that the Palestinian death toll in the war reached 67,139 on Sunday, with nearly 170,000 injured. The ministry does not specify how many of those killed were civilians or combatants, but states that women and children make up about half of the dead.

The ministry is part of the Hamas-run government, and the United Nations and many independent experts consider its figures to be the most reliable estimate of wartime casualties.

Israel’s military has said it continues to dismantle Hamas infrastructure and warned residents not to return to northern Gaza.

“We’re on the brink, and we don’t know whether one will die of a strike or starvation,” said Mahmoud Hashem, a Palestinian father sheltering in a tent in Gaza City.

**Cousin Alleges Witnessing Abuse**

Kathleen McAllister made the shocking allegations on Monday, October 6, during a court hearing concerning Richards’ request to make her temporary restraining order against Phypers permanent.

“I saw Aaron hit Denise, and immediately she had a really bad black eye,” McAllister claimed during her testimony. “I’m literally in shock now to this day about it.”

Earlier this year, Richards shared a photo of herself with a black eye, accusing Phypers of causing the injury. During the hearing, McAllister — who worked at Phypers’ medical office in Malibu for five years — revealed how Phypers allegedly struck Richards with the palm of his hand.

“[Denise] was in shock, I was in shock,” she recalled.

**’Horrific’ Acts of Abuse Described**

According to McAllister, the couple’s fighting often escalated, with one particular argument triggered by Phypers accusing Richards of placing “listening devices” in his office. She said alcohol was involved during the incident.

“It was an evening of chaos and arguing that kept escalating,” she said in court.

Phypers, 53, filed for divorce from the 54-year-old actress on July 7, 2025, citing their separation date as July 4. Despite their split, both have continued exchanging accusations, each alleging horrific behavior by the other.

McAllister testified that she witnessed “horrific” abuse by Phypers during their relationship, including an incident where he “pinned [Richards] against the concrete wall where his truck was parked at the office.”

“He was choking her and her head slammed against the [wall] and caused a concussion,” McAllister claimed. “She was just really upset, in pain, disoriented. [I was] concerned she could have died.”

**Disturbing Details of Abuse**

In another fight, McAllister stated she heard “thrashing” in the bathroom. She alleged Richards suffered a brutal head injury after Phypers slammed her head on a toilet paper rack.

Adding to the disturbing details, McAllister claimed she heard Phypers threaten to kill Richards “several times.”

When asked if she feared for Richards’ life, McAllister responded, “We both were. He threatened to kill us.” She added, “He just would be raging and threatening that if we told anybody, he’d kill us all. As abuse escalated through the years, he exploited our empathy.”

Before her testimony, Richards’ lawyer revealed that McAllister agreed to speak under the condition her name be kept off the witness list because she is “deathly afraid of Mr. Phypers.”

**Phypers Denies Allegations**

Phypers has not directly responded to the claims made in McAllister’s testimony. However, he did deny ever striking Richards during an interview with Inside Edition.

“It looks like makeup,” Phypers said when shown a photo of Richards with the injury. “I did not cause a black eye, bruise, or anything.”

He also accused Richards of fabricating the abuse claims out of anger. “She’s upset I publicly dumped her to the world, and she’s mad. So how does she retaliate? File a bogus abuse claim,” he stated.

Since filing for divorce, Richards has accused Phypers of domestic violence and was granted a temporary restraining order against the wellness guru.

The couple is scheduled to appear in court on October 8 to determine whether the restraining order will be made permanent.

Glenside teacher, author, and mother launches book and business to highlight passion for math

Glenside resident Shameeka Browne is a mother of five, business owner, and teacher who has recently added another accomplishment to her resume: author. Browne’s new book, *Queen of 24*, tells her personal story while also highlighting her passion for math.

She hopes that her book, along with her business, Math is All Around Us LLC, will help children and their parents gain a deeper understanding of math. Through her endeavors and business, Browne aspires to open a space for teachers who want to try out new activities to teach math to their students and see if the exercises will work in the classroom.

“I see that there is a greater need for families to be empowered with how they can help their child with their math education,” she said. “The great thing about passion is it becomes contagious, but it just can’t be the passion, it also has to be the love for the young people that are sitting in front of you.”

Browne credits her love for math to one of her teachers at Wagner Middle School, Mr. Plummer, who is also featured in the book. She plans to release five more books, each focusing on the varying age groups of her five children, from preschool to college.

“I want to help families understand the roles that they have in their child’s math education,” Browne explained. “It truly does start at home, and the math that your child sees from the time that they wake up in the morning to the time that they go to bed at night — we can take advantage of that.”

During the writing and creative process, Browne faced several challenges. Uncertainty about having enough money to publish, fear that her story was not worthy of being published, and a publisher terminating their contract just two weeks before she was supposed to reveal the book cover to her family and supporters left her with feelings of inadequacy.

“I’m a math person, and it’s ironic that I put myself in the same position that I tell my students not to do,” Browne said. “When they say they are not math people, I prove to them that they are. But on the flip side, I was telling myself that I wasn’t a writer because who could be both? I can be both.”

Browne was able to find an illustrator who could adequately reflect the story she was telling: Philly native Reggie Byers, who had also done some artwork at Wagner Middle School.

“I look at the cover, and I want to cry,” Browne shared. “What was different about this illustrator was that I did not send him any pictures other than a picture of myself during that time in middle school and my family. When I tell you I saw the cover and said, ‘This looks like me.’”

Before its official release to the public, Browne sold over 200 copies of *Queen of 24*—a remarkable feat for most first-time authors. The book is currently available for purchase at [www.mathisallaroundus.org](http://www.mathisallaroundus.org).

She continues to help the next generation find their love and passion for math as a math specialist and content lead in the Lower Merion School District.
