UK says it will introduce digital ID cards, reviving a contentious idea

LONDON — British citizens and permanent residents will soon be required to produce a mandatory digital identification card in order to obtain employment, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Friday.

This move revives a contentious idea aimed at demonstrating that the government is maintaining control over the country’s borders.

According to officials, the new digital ID system is expected to help reduce unauthorized work and strengthen border security measures.
