Smart was accused of calling a timeout instead of clapping during the Auburn contest, and Kiffin made sure he wasn’t doing anything similar with his hands this time around. However, he clearly was being playful with the official, sparking multiple reactions online.
Chris Hummer of 247Sports caught the moment and the laugh Kiffin shared with the referee. The fan site Everything Ole Miss even referred to their head coach as a “national treasure” following the viral clip.
Adding to the intrigue of this matchup, Kiffin reportedly texted Smart multiple times before the game, fueling the playful rivalry between the two coaches.
Kiffin was in a humorous mood throughout the day, joking about another moment involving his old boss at Alabama, Nick Saban. The context came from comments made by Saban’s wife, Terry, regarding the possibility of Nick Saban taking over the now-open Penn State job.
“I have no doubt if Nick wanted to go back to coaching, he could win his eighth national championship. But we’re having too much fun, and we wouldn’t want to take that opportunity away from all of our baby coaches. Like Kirby (Smart) and Lane,” Terry Saban shared on College GameDay.
In response, Kiffin dropped a succinct reply with a laughing emoji, keeping the tone lighthearted. For Penn State fans hoping Kiffin might be a candidate to take over their program, those hopes are likely to be dashed, as Kiffin is reportedly working on a new contract extension as of Friday.
