Off the news: Maui gains 200 affordable housing units

Maui’s housing situation received a much-needed boost on Thursday with the opening of Kaiaulu o Kuku‘ia in Lahaina. This 200-unit permanent affordable housing complex is the first to open since the devastating 2023 wildfires that affected the area.

Kaiaulu o Kuku‘ia will serve 197 families who earn between 30% and 60% of the area median income, providing them with quality, long-term housing options. Beyond just homes, the complex offers a range of onsite services to support residents’ needs.

Among these services is free access to a Bezos Academy preschool, giving young children a strong educational start. Additionally, nonprofit Ikaika ‘Ohana provides social and educational programs to help foster community engagement and support.

The project was financed with considerable support, including $83 million in federal funds and $41 million in state low-income housing tax credits, underscoring a strong commitment to rebuilding and revitalizing Lahaina after the wildfires.
