Newsom hits ‘reckless’ military display after highway patrol vehicle hit by shrapnel

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) condemned Saturday’s Marine Corps live-fire training demonstration in California, calling it “reckless” after a California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicle was damaged.

According to CHP, one of its vehicles on Interstate 5 sustained damage caused by metal shrapnel from an explosive artillery shell fired during the demonstration held at Camp Pendleton, located in San Diego County.

The incident has raised concerns over safety measures during military training exercises conducted near public highways. Officials are currently investigating the extent of the damage and reviewing protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
