When Kelsea Ballerini released her 2022 album *Subject to Change*, it became the fuel Alexandra Kay needed to find the strength to leave her marriage. Kay opened up about Ballerini’s significant impact on her personal life during a conversation with *Taste of Country Nights* about her new album, *Second Wind*.
When asked if she gravitated toward any albums about divorce from other female country artists while going through her own split in 2023, Kay shared, “Oh, for sure. I remember when I heard Kelsea’s [album] I was feeling very, very lonely in my relationship and I was like, whoa—what she is doing right now, and she’s doing it on this level. That is strength.”
She continued, “I would be lying if I said it didn’t give me a bit of strength to be like, ‘This doesn’t have to be my reality.’ I don’t have to be sitting here crying, feeling lonely in a relationship, ya know?”
When asked if she has had a chance to tell Ballerini about the impact she had on her divorce, Kay explained, “Anytime I ever see Kelsea, we are on a carpet or at a show and we are in passing so quickly.”
Meanwhile, Kay is paying the inspiration forward to her own fans. She shared that people often come up to her saying things like, “You made me realize I needed to leave my man!” Kay joked that when this happens, she never quite knows whether to respond with a “you’re welcome” or an “I’m sorry.”
Kay’s new album, *Second Wind*, was released on Friday, October 24.
