Labaron Philon scores 22 as No. 15 Alabama beats North Dakota 91-62 in season opener

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Labaron Philon Jr. led No. 15 Alabama with 22 points and eight assists as the Crimson Tide opened their season with a convincing 91-62 victory against North Dakota on Monday night.

Philon was instrumental in Alabama’s strong start, scoring or assisting on 32 of the team’s 48 first-half points, helping to overcome a short-handed bench. Alabama was without key players including guards Aden Holloway (wrist) and Latrell Wrightsell (Achilles), as well as transfer forward Keitenn Bristow (ankle). Additionally, transfer guard Jalil Bethea remained sidelined due to a foot injury sustained during practice in September.

With those absences, true freshman Amari Allen and transfer Taylor Bol Bowen earned starting roles. Allen made a significant impact, finishing the game with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

North Dakota was led by Garrett Anderson, who scored 13 points, and Eli King, who added 11. The game remained close early, but Alabama pulled away with a decisive 19-5 run midway through the first half. Philon displayed excellent control throughout the game, hitting 6 of 7 shots and assisting on five teammates’ baskets in the opening half.

After the initial surge, the Crimson Tide’s lead never dropped below double digits. Four Alabama players finished the game in double figures, including London Jemison with 12 points.

Despite the strong offensive showing, turnovers continue to be an issue for Alabama. The team committed 15 turnovers in the opener, a concern given that they ranked 268th nationally (out of 355 teams) last season, averaging 12.7 turnovers per game.

Looking ahead, North Dakota will host UC Riverside on Thursday night, while Alabama prepares to face No. 5 St. John’s on Saturday.
