I’ve tested a ton of ugly Switch 2 cases, but this $30 flip-to-reveal Mario hard shell passes the vibe check

It’s been five months since the Nintendo Switch 2 launched, and in that time, I’ve gotten my hands on a ludicrous number of cases. From softshell to hardshell, and even those large all-in-one carrying bags that can store everything down to the dock, none have quite matched the flashy, funky appeal of the PlayTrek Mario Bricks Travel Case.

Available now for $29.99 / £19.99, this Nintendo Switch 2 case is officially licensed by Nintendo and fully embraces its branding. It’s one of the most colorful cases on the market, featuring a vibrant Mario Brick design, colorful straps, and matching interior accents. Turtle Beach could have stopped there, and I’d have been happy carrying my handheld around in such an eye-catching accessory. But they went a step further, adding a “flip to reveal” lenticular design that shows off a hidden Mario image — and I’m completely obsessed.

If you’re unfamiliar with what “lenticular” means, don’t worry — our team’s own Duncan Robertson wasn’t entirely certain either when writing about the new Turtle Beach Switch 2 controllers. Basically, the lenticular effect means the image you see changes depending on the viewing angle. From one side, the case looks like it’s covered in a simple Mario brick design, but from another angle, a cute Mario scene is revealed.

The bricks shift to show Mario jumping in the air to defeat some pesky Goombas, creating a look that’s just as adorable as it is cool. While Turtle Beach easily could have stuck with just the Mario artwork, the lenticular feature makes this case stand out among the many others flooding the market.

The lenticular effect covers the top outer half of the hardshell case, but the rest is equally colorful. The small silicone handle on top, perfect for carrying the case from room to room, is a bright red and green. Additionally, the red edge along the zipper adds an extra pop of color, making the whole package vibrant and vivid.

One of my favorite design touches — which cements this as the best-looking Switch 2 case I’ve tested so far — is the back of the case. Though rarely visible when placed on a coffee table, it features iconic Mario-red leather-like fabric with a big yellow ‘Super Mario’ logo centered right in the middle. As a longtime Mario fan of over 30 years, it feels absolutely on brand and looks fantastic alongside my collection of Mario merchandise and accessories.

But this case isn’t just about looks—it’s built to protect. Constructed with a durable EVA molded hardshell and TPU-coated polyester exterior, my Switch 2 has felt extremely safe in the week I’ve had it. Inside, the case’s layout closely resembles the Belkin Carrying Case, which was a relief since the Belkin alternative is one of the best cases I’ve used so far.

Unzipping the case (complete with a bright yellow and blue zipper) reveals plenty of storage options and a protective fabric flap running down the center. The top of this flap holds storage for up to 12 game cartridges, made up of two strips of blue elastic. In my case, the elastic is sewn a little too tight, making it slightly harder to insert games than with cases like the Belkin Carrying Case. That said, the tightness doesn’t feel restrictive enough to raise concerns about the safety of my Switch and Switch 2 games.

Additionally, the case includes a small fabric mesh pocket, perfect for storing smaller accessories such as a spare set of Switch 2 Joy-Con rails. I highly recommend keeping a spare pair handy — I lost my original rails quickly, so finding this pouch included was a great relief.

If Super Mario isn’t your thing, Turtle Beach also offers a Donkey Kong version featuring the same funky flip-to-reveal lenticular design. I was lucky enough to check it out, but as a dedicated Mario fan, I was more drawn to the Mario Bricks model discussed here. The Donkey Kong case features a jungle design on the front with DK and Diddy Kong running through a flock of trees. All the extra details, like the game storage and zipper edges, are green to tie in with the design’s theme.

Both the PlayTrek Mario Bricks and Donkey Kong Switch 2 Travel Cases are priced at $29.99 / £19.99 and available from Turtle Beach and select retailers. If you want one, I recommend grabbing it as soon as possible—they’ve already sold out completely at the Turtle Beach storefront on the very day they launched! Clearly, plenty of shoppers have excellent taste.
