Maine women’s basketball drops third straight to open season

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) women’s basketball team overcame a slow start to defeat the University of Maine 81-77 on Friday night in Richmond, Virginia.

The Black Bears (0-3) held a 10-point lead with just over three minutes remaining in the second quarter. However, VCU responded with an impressive 14-0 run late in the quarter, closing the half strong to trail by only two points, 32-30.

VCU took control early in the third quarter, with Lucia Sotelo Miguez sinking a jump shot at the 6:39 mark to give the Rams (2-1) a lead they would not relinquish.

Maine was led by Kaliyah Sain, who scored a game-high 26 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Adrianna Smith contributed 22 points along with seven assists and five rebounds, while Asta Blauenfeldt chipped in 17 points.

For VCU, Katarina Knezevic paced the team with 19 points. Cyriah Griffin and Ann Zachariah each added 16 points, and Patricia Augustin contributed 12 points to the Rams’ winning effort.

The victory marks VCU’s second win of the season as they improve to 2-1, while Maine remains winless at 0-3.
