In December, Donald Trump was awarded the FIFA Peace Prize, a recognition that some have dismissed as a “participation trophy” for the president who has long coveted the Nobel Peace Prize. However, even this secondary accolade is now under scrutiny following recent developments involving the U.S. and Venezuela.
Early on Saturday morning, President Trump announced the successful capture of Venezuela’s leader and his wife by U.S. forces. Following this, he declared his intention for the U.S. to “run” the nation, a move that many perceived as imperialistic and contradictory to the spirit of the FIFA Peace Prize.
The apparent disconnect did not go unnoticed by the public and media figures alike. Popular podcaster Tony Martin expressed skepticism, stating, “I’m seriously starting to question the credibility of the FIFA Peace Prize.” Media host Zack Guzmán added, “FIFA awarded Trump their first ever peace prize exactly 29 days before he bombed Venezuela.”
The widely followed satire account TheRealThelmaJohnson responded to a Fox News post on social media, commenting, “I’m starting to think Donald Trump doesn’t take the FIFA Peace Prize seriously.” Meanwhile, a former Republican jokingly announced, “Trump has been officially stripped of his FIFA Peace Prize,” accompanied by an AI-generated video depicting the medal being taken from the president.
Sports journalist Leyla Hamed criticized the award in light of Trump’s recent actions, saying, “FIFA, under Gianni Infantino, gave Trump its first-ever ‘Peace Award.’ Since then, Trump has bombed Nigeria, Somalia, and Venezuela, and rolled out the red carpet for Netanyahu, the man responsible for the genocide in Palestine.”
TV journalist Dan Walker also weighed in, stating, “I am not pretending to be an expert on Venezuela, but it is uncomfortable to watch world leaders trying their best not to criticize President Trump for steamrolling years of political procedure and precedent in removing Maduro and now claiming the U.S. will ‘run’ the country. FIFA might want to rethink the ‘peace prize’.”
These reactions highlight growing controversy over the FIFA Peace Prize awarded to Trump and raise questions about the relationship between political actions and international recognitions of peace.
