‘Doctor Dolittle’ and ‘The Collector’ Actress Dies: Samantha Eggar Was 86

British actress Samantha Eggar has died at the age of 86. Her daughter, actress Jenna Stern, told The Hollywood Reporter that Eggar passed away on Wednesday at her home in Sherman Oaks.

Best known for her roles in *Doctor Dolittle* and *The Collector*, Eggar had been battling illness for the past five years but “lived a long, fabulous life,” Stern said.

Born Victoria Louise Samantha Marie Elizabeth Therese Eggar on March 5, 1939, in Hampstead, England, she was raised in the Buckinghamshire countryside. During World War II, Eggar lived in the countryside with family friends and spent 12 years in a convent. It was there that her love of the arts blossomed as she was exposed to plays, concerts, and poetry.

Although she earned a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, her mother did not want her to pursue acting. Instead, Eggar was allowed to attend art school to study painting and drawing, eventually working as a fashion artist after graduation.

Her career took a turn when her cousin encouraged her to enroll at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts. “He said, ‘Here’s the door. Get in there. Go and do it,’” Eggar once recalled. “‘Do those bits you’ve done. You’ve got your own version of Ophelia. And you’ve got some poems you’ve learned.’ So I did. And the next thing I know, I’m accepted.”

Before completing the program at Webber Douglas, Eggar was offered a role in Cecil Beaton’s play *Landscape With Figures* in 1959, about painter Thomas Gainsborough. Producer Betty E. Box soon noticed her and cast her as a college coed in *Young and Willing* (1962). This was followed by roles in *Doctor in Distress* (1963), *Dr. Crippen* (1963), and *Psyche 59* (1964).

In 1965, Eggar landed the role of Miranda Grey in William Wyler’s psychological horror film *The Collector*, opposite Terence Stamp. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where both Eggar and Stamp won Best Actress and Best Actor awards, respectively. That same year, Eggar won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, though the Oscar went to Julie Christie for *Darling*.

Throughout the 1960s, Eggar appeared in numerous films, including *Return From the Ashes*, *Walk, Don’t Run*, and *Doctor Dolittle*.

In 1972, Eggar moved to Los Angeles to further her acting career. She starred opposite Yul Brynner in the CBS television adaptation of *The King and I* and played Phyllis Dietrichson in the 1973 ABC remake of *Double Indemnity*.

Her extensive filmography also includes *Ragin’ Cajun*, *Dark Horse*, *Inevitable Grace*, *The Phantom*, *The Astronaut’s Wife*, *The Seven-Per-Cent Solution*, *The Dead Are Alive!*, *A Name for Evil*, *The Uncanny*, *Curtains*, *The Brood*, as well as appearances on TV series like *Star Trek: The Next Generation* and *Commander in Chief*.

Beyond acting, Eggar was deeply involved in her community as a lector and lay minister at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills and at Saint Francis de Sales Parish in Sherman Oaks. She led weekly meditations there until the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eggar was married to American actor Tom Stern from 1964 until their divorce in 1971. Stern passed away last year.

Her family also shared fond memories of her love for animals: “To know Sam was to understand her love for animals, all creatures great and small. Her beloved pups ranged from Great Danes to Dalmatians, street rescues to her adored bulldogs, their leashes still hanging in memoriam long after their passing.”

Samantha Eggar leaves behind a legacy of remarkable performances and a life filled with passion for the arts and compassion for all living beings.

Charlotte FC beats the Union 2-0 to clinch a top 4 seed in the playoffs

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Wilfried Zaha and Kerwin Vargas scored six minutes apart in the first half, leading Charlotte FC to a 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday night. Kristijan Kahlina recorded his 12th clean sheet of the season, helping Charlotte clinch a top-four seed in the playoffs for the first time in club history.

Charlotte (19-13-2) became the 11th team in MLS history to win at least 13 home games in a single season, excluding the shootout era. Zaha, in his first year with the club, joined Anders Dreyer and Philip Zinckernagel as one of the five first-year players since 2020 to score at least 10 goals and record at least 10 assists in a single season.

Philadelphia (20-8-6), known for having one of the league’s top defenses, allowed multiple goals for just the second time since May 24. Union goalkeeper Andre Blake, who entered the game with the third-most clean sheets in the Eastern Conference this season at nine, was unable to keep a clean sheet on this occasion.

Broncos activate Dre Greenlaw from injured reserve ahead of Giants game

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos activated prized free agent acquisition Dre Greenlaw from injured reserve on Saturday ahead of their Sunday game against the New York Giants.

Greenlaw has been sidelined since the summer with a quadriceps injury he first incurred during the team’s offseason program. Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph said Thursday that Greenlaw would be on a pitch count whenever he returned to the lineup.

The Broncos (4-2) are seeking their fourth consecutive victory when they host the resurgent Giants (2-4) Sunday at Empower Field. The team will also honor the late Demaryius Thomas, who was the 38th member of the Broncos’ Ring of Fame.

To make room on the roster, the Broncos released quarterback Sam Ehlinger, whom they signed back to their practice squad on Saturday. In other moves, Denver released defensive back A.J. Woods and wide receiver Thayer Thomas (injury settlement) from their practice squad.

Greenlaw signed a three-year, $31.5 million contract with the Broncos this spring after six seasons in San Francisco. He returned to practice this week and was limited on Wednesday and Thursday before participating fully on Friday, signaling his readiness to come off injured reserve.

As usual with injury updates, coach Sean Payton remained coy when asked about Greenlaw’s status on Friday, refusing to confirm if he was a full participant before the practice report was released. When pressed if Greenlaw had a good week of practice, Payton said, “Yes, positive. He was able to go and move around, so yes.”

The Broncos noted that inside linebacker Justin Strnad, who leads all NFL inside linebackers with 2.5 sacks, has earned playing time even with Greenlaw’s return to the lineup.

Denver’s defense, which just limited Justin Fields to minus-10 net passing yards in a 13-11 victory over the New York Jets in London, is expected to step up a notch with Greenlaw healthy.

“Dre looked good out there,” star cornerback Patrick Surtain said after Greenlaw returned to practice Wednesday. “It seems like he’s very sharp out there on everything, on the game plan, so I’m very excited for him.”

Santa Clara Co. DA gun task force dismantles ‘ghost gun factory’ in Campbell

CAMPBELL, Calif. (KGO) — The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Gun Violence Task Force is celebrating the dismantling of what they call a ghost gun factory in Campbell. A 28-year-old man is now facing more than 30 felonies for possessing and creating ghost guns, as well as devices designed to make standard weapons even more deadly.

3D printers have revolutionized manufacturing, but when they’re used to produce unregistered weapons—known as ghost guns—law enforcement says they present a significant threat to the community.

During a routine domestic violence probation check-in, investigators uncovered an operation that was anything but normal. Campbell resident Alfred Amaya, 28, is at the center of the case after authorities found him actively manufacturing devices that convert rifles and handguns into automatic weapons using a 3D printer inside his bedroom closet.

“These 3D printers are items that are easily kept in a person’s home, and that is what makes them so challenging for law enforcement,” said Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Mike Vidmar. “Whether he was possessing for sales or simply as a possession item, these are public safety risks.”

Amaya, who is already on probation for domestic violence charges, is now facing more than 30 felony charges and is being held on a $1.75 million bail.

The devices Amaya was allegedly 3D printing include “switches” that turn firearms into machine guns—items recently made illegal under a new law signed by Governor Gavin Newsom. This law prohibits the sale of firearms easily transformed into automatic weapons with the use of such switches.

Residents expressed concern over the presence of unregulated ghost guns in the community. “If the people owning guns, they’re regulated and they have to register,” said local resident Phuong Pham. “But these people, they can print it at home and there’s no regulation and no one can stop them from doing bad things.”

Alongside the 30 switches, two ghost guns and ammunition were found in an area accessible to two children, leading to additional child endangerment charges.

Amaya’s mother told ABC7 News that her son is not a violent person and called the charges and accusations “shocking.”

Deputy District Attorney Vidmar praised the gun violence task force for their work. “Any time we can remove these items from persons who have the ability to carry them into the public setting, our community is a safer place,” he said.

Alfred Amaya is scheduled to return to court for his plea hearing on the morning of November 19.
