Watch SpaceX launch its 10,000th Starlink satellite to orbit today on rocket’s record-breaking 31st flight

SpaceX is set to achieve two major milestones with a single Falcon 9 launch today, October 19, and you can watch the action live. The Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled to launch 28 of SpaceX’s Starlink broadband satellites from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The launch window opens at 10:52 a.m. EDT (14:52 GMT) and will last for four hours.

To date, SpaceX has launched 9,988 Starlink satellites, according to astrophysicist and satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell. With today’s launch, that number will surpass the 10,000 mark, a significant milestone for the company’s ambitious satellite internet constellation.

In addition, this launch will mark the record-breaking 31st liftoff for the Falcon 9’s first-stage booster, designated Booster 1067. This level of rocket reuse is a testament to SpaceX’s innovative approach to making spaceflight more cost-effective and efficient.

SpaceX’s journey with Starlink began in February 2018 with the launch of the first two prototype satellites to low Earth orbit (LEO). Fifteen months later, the company started building the megaconstellation in earnest. The public beta test for Starlink service launched in October 2020, followed by a commercial rollout in 2021.

Today, Starlink provides internet service to millions of customers worldwide, and SpaceX continues to expand the network by regularly deploying new satellites. The pace of launches has been extraordinary in recent months — SpaceX has launched 89 Starlink missions in 2024 alone, already surpassing that number this year.

Looking ahead, SpaceX has permission to deploy up to 12,000 Starlink satellites, with plans that could see the constellation grow to more than 30,000 spacecraft, making it the largest satellite internet network ever constructed.

Out of the 9,988 satellites launched so far, most remain active, with 8,610 currently operational according to McDowell. The rest have been deorbited and are intentionally brought down to burn up in Earth’s atmosphere. Each Starlink satellite has an operational lifespan of about five years.

If everything goes according to plan today, Booster 1067 will return to Earth approximately 8.5 minutes after liftoff and land on SpaceX’s autonomous drone ship, “A Shortfall of Gravitas,” stationed in the Atlantic Ocean. This will mark the booster’s 31st successful launch and landing.

The ability to reuse rockets extensively is central to SpaceX’s strategy for reducing costs and increasing the sustainability of space missions. Building on this success, SpaceX is also developing Starship, a giant fully reusable rocket designed to enable human settlement on Mars. It is important to note that while the Falcon 9 and its close relative Falcon Heavy have reusable first stages, their upper stages remain expendable.

For today’s mission, the Falcon 9’s upper stage will carry the 28 Starlink satellites to low Earth orbit and deploy them approximately 64 minutes after launch.

Stay tuned and enjoy the live coverage of this exciting launch as SpaceX continues to push the boundaries of space technology and connectivity.

Pitt dominates Syracuse 30-13 for third straight win

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Quarterback Mason Heintschel ran for a touchdown, Kenny Johnson returned a punt 66 yards for another score, and Trey Butkowski kicked three field goals as Pittsburgh defeated Syracuse 30-13 on Saturday night.

Pitt (5-2, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) secured its third straight win behind true freshman Heintschel, while the Orange (3-4, 1-3) suffered their third consecutive loss. This was Syracuse’s third straight game with LSU transfer Rickie Collins starting at quarterback, following a season-ending injury to Steve Angeli.

With the victory, Pitt extended its dominance over Syracuse, winning seven of the last eight meetings and 20 of the last 24 games in the series that dates back to 1955.

Both teams struggled offensively, combining for just 28 first downs and 472 total yards. Penalties were also a factor, with the teams committing 25 combined infractions.

Heintschel completed 13 of 24 passes for 143 yards with one interception and was sacked seven times. Ja’Kyrian Turner led the Panthers on the ground with 42 rushing yards. Collins finished 16-of-32 passing for 126 yards, throwing two touchdown passes alongside three interceptions, and led Syracuse with 37 rushing yards. Johntay Cook was the Orange’s top receiver with seven catches for 66 yards.

The first half featured several critical quarterback turnovers. After an interception by Pitt cornerback Tamon Lynum, Heintschel broke free for a 36-yard touchdown run, putting Pitt on the board first. Late in the first quarter, Syracuse cornerback Davien Kerr intercepted Heintschel and returned the ball to the Pitt 12-yard line, setting up an 11-yard touchdown pass from Collins to Darrell Gill Jr. to tie the game at 7.

From there, Pitt took control. Just before halftime, following a Syracuse three-and-out, Johnson fielded a punt from Jack Stonehouse and sprinted 66 yards for a touchdown with only two seconds remaining, giving the Panthers a 17-7 lead at the break.

Syracuse’s offensive woes continued in the second half. A potential fourth interception for Pitt was thwarted by a dropped catch from safety Javon McIntyre. Freshman Luke Carney briefly replaced Collins for two drives in the third quarter before Collins returned.

The Orange managed only 74 yards and five first downs in the first 30 minutes, including just 14 yards on 12 rushes against a Pitt defense that ranked nationally among the best against the run, allowing just 2.16 yards per carry. Syracuse also went three-and-out six times.

**The Takeaway**

**Pittsburgh:** The Panthers did just enough to secure their third straight victory but struggled to consistently move the ball and protect Heintschel.

**Syracuse:** With their offense plagued by turnovers and inefficiency, the Orange face the daunting prospect of three of their next four games on the road against ranked opponents, including a crucial matchup next Saturday at undefeated No. 7 Georgia Tech.

**Up Next**

– Pitt hosts N.C. State on Saturday.

Apple’s failure to finalize the design of one component could delay iPhone Fold

**Foldable iPhone May Be Delayed Until 2027 Due to Hinge Design Challenges**

The launch of Apple’s first foldable iPhone might be pushed back to 2027, owing to setbacks in the design of a crucial component. Until now, most reports suggested that Apple would unveil its much-anticipated foldable iPhone as early as next September, debuting alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the iPhone Air. The base iPhone 18 model was expected in the following spring, along with a more affordable iPhone 18e.

However, new speculation indicates that the device, likely to be named the iPhone Fold, could face a significant delay—potentially not arriving until 2027. This update comes from Japanese securities firm Mizuho Securities.

### Hinge Production Delays Could Push iPhone Fold Release to 2027

According to South Korean website The Elec, Mizuho informed its clients that Apple has yet to finalize both the design and specifications for its first foldable iPhone. There are lingering questions about several components, the most notable being the hinge—a critical part for foldable devices.

Apple reportedly planned to use a unique hinge designed to minimize, or even eliminate, the crease that plagues current foldable phones. Just recently, respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo noted that the hinge for Apple’s foldable iPhone may end up costing $20 to $40 less than previously expected. Currently, the price per hinge is estimated at $100 to $120, but Kuo predicts this could drop to $70 or $80 by the time mass production begins.

Mizuho’s note, translated by AppleInsider, stated: “It is not easy to mass-produce a foldable phone in the third quarter of 2026 and release it in September. It takes time to decide the final design and specification of Apple’s hinge.” This could be reason enough for Apple to delay the iPhone Fold’s release until 2027.

### Anticipated Specs and Launch Numbers

Mizuho Securities forecasts that the iPhone Fold will feature a 7.58-inch internal screen and a 5.38-inch cover display. Previous reports had predicted a slightly larger 5.49-inch external screen and a 7.76-inch internal screen. For comparison, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 will have an 8-inch internal display and a 6.5-inch external screen.

If Apple does manage a 2026 launch, Mizuho believes that the company would produce five to seven million fewer iPhone Folds than originally planned. The anticipated number of display panels has been revised downward from 13 million to 9 million units.

### Is There Demand for a Foldable iPhone?

A poll taken about the device revealed a divided audience:

– **Yes, I can’t wait for the iPhone Fold.**
– **No, I don’t like foldable phones.**
– **I would love a foldable phone, but not a foldable iPhone.**

### Foldables Remain a Niche Market

Foldable phones currently account for roughly 1.5% to 1.6% of the global smartphone market in 2025, with total shipments forecast to reach nearly 20 million units this year. The largest manufacturer in this segment is Huawei, holding 45% of the foldable market as of the second quarter of 2025.

Motorola’s Razr line has also surged, doubling its global foldable market share to 28% and securing second place. Samsung, meanwhile, holds 9% of the worldwide foldable market. Notably, in the U.S., Motorola and Samsung are the top two foldable phone brands.

### Touch ID May Return with the iPhone Fold

One fan-favorite feature rumored to return with the iPhone Fold is Touch ID. First introduced with the iPhone 5s in 2013 and replaced by Face ID starting with the iPhone X, the fingerprint sensor could be making a comeback with Apple’s first foldable device.

### The Foldable Future

While the foldable smartphone market remains a niche, many analysts predict a surge in popularity if and when Apple enters the space. Until then, enthusiasts and casual users alike will have to wait a bit longer for Apple’s innovative take on the foldable device.
