Broncos rally from 14-point deficit to hand Eagles their first loss of the season, 21-17

Bo Nix threw an 11-yard touchdown pass and J.K. Dobbins rushed for a 2-yard score in the fourth quarter as the Denver Broncos erased a 14-point deficit to hand the Philadelphia Eagles their first loss of the season, 21-17, on Sunday.

The Broncos batted down Jalen Hurts’ last-gasp pass on the final play of the game, sending the Super Bowl champions to just their second defeat in their last 22 games.

Denver (3-2) caught a huge break during their rally when the Eagles had a late fourth-down conversion called back due to an illegal shift penalty against running back Saquon Barkley. This forced Philadelphia (4-1) to punt, and Hurts was unable to lead another comeback attempt. His final pass, on second-and-10 from the 29-yard line, was knocked down as time expired, securing the improbable Broncos victory.

Nix celebrated by waving his arms toward dozens of Broncos fans dressed in orange who had gathered near the visitors’ tunnel.

Nix threw for 242 yards — a week after throwing for a career-high 326 yards and two touchdowns against the Cincinnati Bengals — as Denver’s run-first offense and dominant defense came alive in the fourth quarter.

The Broncos totaled just 199 yards and trailed 17-3 at the end of the third quarter before Nix jump-started the offense.

Dobbins, who followed up his 101 rushing yards against Cincinnati with 79 yards on Sunday, punched in a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to make the score 17-10.

The Broncos regained possession, and Nix connected with Courtland Sutton for a 34-yard gain on the decisive drive. He then found Evan Engram over the middle for an 11-yard touchdown.

Head coach Sean Payton gambled on a two-point conversion, which paid off when Nix hit Tony Franklin, putting Denver ahead 18-17 with 7:36 remaining in the game.

The play stunned and silenced the Philadelphia crowd — a familiar gut punch coming off the Phillies’ blown three-run lead the previous night in a playoff loss to the Dodgers.

However, the resilient Eagles were far from ready to surrender their 10-game winning streak.

At fourth-and-4 from their own 49-yard line, Hurts connected with DeVonta Smith on a long reception that should have resulted in a first down — only for a penalty on Barkley for an illegal shift to wipe the play off the board. Smith finished with eight catches for 114 yards.

That marked the end of the Eagles’ late push.

Will Lutz added a 36-yard field goal with 1:11 left to extend Denver’s lead to 21-17.

Hurts threw for 280 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Goedert and a 47-yard TD pass to Barkley in the third quarter that had given the Eagles a 17-10 lead.

Mensah, Castle lead Duke to comeback past N.C. State, 45-33

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Darian Mensah threw three touchdown passes as Duke snapped a two-game losing streak, overcoming a 13-point deficit to beat N.C. State 45-33 on Saturday.

The Blue Devils (2-2, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference opener) scored 21 points in less than four minutes of game time, spanning the two halves, to surge into the lead. Anderson Castle added three rushing touchdowns, including a clinching 66-yard dash on third down with 2:19 remaining.

For N.C. State (3-1, 1-1), CJ Bailey tossed two touchdown passes to Terrell Anderson but was intercepted three times. Hollywood Smothers rushed for 123 yards and one touchdown, while Will Wilson had two 1-yard TD runs. Anderson finished with 166 yards on six catches.

Mensah was 19-for-28 passing for 269 yards. Castle gained 92 rushing yards on 12 attempts.

N.C. State drove 99 yards to score on the second play of the second quarter on Bailey’s 6-yard throw to Anderson and later extended the lead to 20-7. The game-changing play came inside of two minutes in the first half when Duke linebacker Tre Freeman intercepted Bailey’s fourth-down pass, returning it 67 yards to set up a go-ahead 1-yard touchdown run from Castle.

**The Takeaway**

*N.C. State:* The Wolfpack racked up 535 yards of total offense but struggled with defensive lapses that prevented them from securing a second consecutive in-state road victory.

*Duke:* The Blue Devils were minus-6 in turnover margin entering the game, but their plus-4 effort on Saturday proved crucial in toppling the Wolfpack for the third season in a row. Duke, which also blocked a third-quarter field goal attempt, has now won five of the last six meetings.

**Up Next**

– *N.C. State:* Saturday at home vs. Virginia Tech
– *Duke:* Saturday at Syracuse

DJ Moore or David Montgomery: Who should I start in Fantasy Football Week 3?

DJ Moore vs. David Montgomery: Who Should You Start in Fantasy Football Week 3?

DJ Moore and David Montgomery stand out as two excellent flex options for fantasy football in Week 3. The Chicago Bears’ wide receiver and the Detroit Lions’ running back face opponents who have struggled to contain players at their respective positions, potentially opening the door for dominant performances. Whether you prefer wide receivers or running backs in your flex spot, both players present viable choices. This article breaks down who should take that crucial single flex position on your fantasy lineup.

DJ Moore Fantasy Outlook for Week 3

After a slow start to the 2024 season, DJ Moore is eager to bounce back in his second year with Caleb Williams at quarterback. So far, Moore has recorded eight receptions on 11 targets for 114 yards but has yet to find the end zone. His efforts have come under scrutiny, especially following the Bears’ Week 2 loss to the Detroit Lions, 52-21. Head coach Ben Johnson stated he would be closely monitoring players who don’t contribute when the ball isn’t in their hands, and Moore seems to be falling out of favor with fans.

However, the Dallas Cowboys, Moore’s Week 3 opponent, have struggled to contain wide receivers this season, allowing significant fantasy points per game at the position. This defensive vulnerability could provide the perfect opportunity for Moore to bounce back and deliver a strong fantasy performance.

David Montgomery Fantasy Outlook for Week 3

David Montgomery’s production has also dipped in 2024. After rushing for 1,105 yards on 219 carries in 2023, he recorded 775 yards on 185 carries last season. This year hasn’t been much stronger; Montgomery has rushed 22 times for 82 yards and one touchdown so far.

Meanwhile, Jahmyr Gibbs has emerged as the Lions’ lead running back, outpacing Montgomery with 94 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown in Week 2. Despite this, the Baltimore Ravens, Montgomery’s Week 3 opponent, have allowed an average of 19 fantasy points per game to running backs. This weakness could be beneficial for Montgomery, especially as Gibbs draws much of Baltimore’s defensive attention.

DJ Moore vs. David Montgomery: Final Verdict

This matchup presents a tough decision. According to Sportskeeda’s fantasy analyzer, DJ Moore holds a slight edge over David Montgomery by just 0.1 fantasy points. However, given Rome Odunze’s emergence as a reliable partner for Caleb Williams and the Ravens’ struggles to stop running backs, Monday night could be the perfect stage for Montgomery to shine.

With Georgia Tech’s Gibbs commanding much of the Baltimore defense’s focus, Montgomery may have the space and opportunities needed to punish the Ravens and lead the Lions to their second victory of the young NFL season.

Ultimately, both players are solid flex options, but the matchup and team dynamics slightly favor Montgomery for Week 3.
