The Broncos received both good news and better news following the Cowboys’ opening field goal.
RJ Harvey electrified the crowd with a 40-yard run to the end zone, putting the Broncos ahead 7-3. This marked the longest run for the team since Melvin Gordon’s 47-yard dash against the Chiefs in Week 18 of the 2021 season.
Earlier, the Cowboys had managed to stop the Broncos on a third-and-7 play, but the defense was flagged for offsides, courtesy of defensive lineman James Houston. Taking advantage, Bo Nix connected with Troy Franklin on a 26-yard pass on the very next play. Just two plays later, Harvey’s touchdown run gave Denver the lead.
Adding to the Broncos’ momentum, cornerback Pat Surtain returned on the following defensive series. Surtain, who was listed as questionable with a lower-leg injury, had only missed one play. The defending Defensive Player of the Year’s return was a significant boost for Denver’s defense.
