Consumers look for best retailer deals as holiday shopping begins
Consumers are showing off their holiday spirit online as they begin to look for the best deals ahead of Christmas. With just under 50 days to go, the Halloween items packed away and the holiday decorations unpacked, Americans are ready to spend on Christmas gifts.
According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are planning to spend around $890 per person to buy holiday gifts, food, decor, and more in 2025. However, this number is actually less than in 2024, when U.S. shoppers spent a record $902 per person.
Experts say the largest piece of the holiday spending pie is gifts, with more than $600 expected to go toward presents this year.
Amid challenges such as the government shutdown, inflation, and tariffs weighing heavily on many consumers, shoppers are desperate for deals. “Consumers are embracing discount stores as a part of their shopping list this year. They are prioritizing big box retailers and dollar stores while having less interest in outlet stores and e-commerce sites,” said Mary Hines Droesch, Head of Consumer and Small Business Products and Analytics at Bank of America.
Some retailers are now offering early Black Friday savings on everything from holiday decor to select toys. Even places like Wayfair are boasting discounts of up to 70% off cookware, Christmas trees, furniture, and more.
Experts say it is never too early to start saving for the holidays.

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont to seek third term in 2026
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont filed the necessary paperwork on Friday to seek a third term in 2026. The Democrat, who has been asked by reporters for months about whether he will run again, said a formal announcement will likely be made next week.
“Yeah, Susan and I are ready to go,” he said during an event about affordable housing, referring to Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz. “I didn’t want you to have to ask me any longer.”
Lamont’s candidate registration form was filed Friday afternoon with the State Elections Enforcement Commission.
Lamont, 71, a wealthy former cable entrepreneur, has developed a reputation as a fiscal moderate. He has signed a major tax cut and worked to pay down unfunded state pension liabilities. Additionally, he has supported access to abortion through safe harbor laws and advocated for greater protections for immigrants.
Notably, Lamont was one of two Democratic governors who attended President Donald Trump’s inauguration. He has carefully chosen which issues to criticize the Republican on, a tactic that has drawn complaints from more liberal Democrats in Connecticut. Some critics have also taken issue with his budgeting approach, deeming it too conservative.
No Connecticut governor has served three consecutive terms in modern times. Former Republican Gov. John G. Rowland was elected to a third consecutive term in November 2002 but resigned in 2004 amid a corruption scandal.

Lotus House unveils The Children’s Village to provide crucial services for kids in Overtown
MIAMI (WSVN) – Lotus House has unveiled The Children’s Village, a new facility designed to provide several vital resources for children and families in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood.
Located on Northeast 14th Terrace, directly across from Lotus House’s 500-bed shelter, The Children’s Village is home to a preschool, after-school care programs, intervention services, and healthcare support. This vibrant center brings together multiple local youth organizations under one roof, united in their mission to support kids and families in the community.
“During the pandemic, we realized that our kids needed more than what we were offering them, so we came up with the idea of building a playground. Shortly after, we realized that they needed more than that. So we invited all of the providers who offer amazing services in Overtown to join us in one roof,” said Lotus House Executive Director Isabella Dell’Oca.
Among the programs offered at The Children’s Village is Girl Power Rocks, which focuses on empowering young girls through educational support, confidence-building, and safety awareness.
“We provide them with different skills to avoid dangers. For instance, trafficking is a significant concern here in Miami, so we address these issues with the girls and provide them with tools like conflict resolution and guidance on how to be better citizens in the community,” explained Rashada Campbell, Director of Operations for Girl Power Rocks.
The Children’s Village is open and available to any youth residing in Overtown, aiming to create a safe and supportive environment for the neighborhood’s children and families.
