Asking Eric: My stepsons seem to have forgotten all the manners we taught them

Dear Eric: I am the stepmother to two great young men. Their father and I have been together since they were teenagers. When they were young, it was a difficult but necessary position for me to be in when it came to teaching them about manners and household chores. They thought I was nagging them to put a napkin on their lap, take their hat off at the dinner table, take their shoes off when they entered the house, carry their dishes to the sink, put the seat down, etc. Now that they are grown men, I am running into a similar, uncomfortable position with them and their significant others. I feel like I am stepping on eggshells and biting my tongue when they come to visit because they have seemed to forget the things we taught them years ago. At a recent family gathering, none of the “kids” offered to help. They showed up empty-handed, sat down and waited to be served. Once the meal was finished, I had to ask them to help me clear the plates. On another occasion, they went to a family holiday that my husband and I did not attend because we were out of town. It was reported back to us that they showed up empty-handed and did not offer to help the hostess clean up after the meal. We were mortified. My husband has offered to say something to them, but his delivery is not always the best. Please, help us help them. Stepping On Eggshells Dear Eggshells: At this point, I think you may be overcompensating for the manners you wish these men had, so your husband’s delivery, poor though it may be, could be a helpful last resort. At the end of the day, however, these are adults, and they have to be responsible for their own behavior. If you’re receiving reports about the behavior of these adults from friends, I’d gently remind these friends that you can’t control another person’s actions. It may feel like it’s a reflection on you or your parenting, but it’s not. They own what they do. But, when they’re guests at your home, it will be helpful to verbalize expectations up front. It’s often easy to fall into old patterns, especially at a childhood home. But patterns don’t have to be set in stone. If you want help clearing the table, tell them, “We’re so happy you’re here. We want to have a gathering in which everyone is involved. We’ll serve and you clear. How’s that sound?” Political rants ruin holiday gatherings Dear Eric: With the holidays approaching, I’m facing a dilemma. Politically, I guess I’m a Libertarian because I am somewhere in the middle, not far left or right. That’s one reason I don’t like discussing politics, as most people who do are at one of the extremes. The other reason is it’s almost always a very negative narrative against the other side, rather than what they believe is positive about their own side. My dilemma is about Christmas. I’m from a very small family and have only a few cousins left. I’m invited each year to a cousin’s home for a lovely dinner party. I’m considering not going (i. e. staying home alone) this year because they are very liberal and very vocal about it. If I don’t chime right in with the Trump-bashing, which will be over the top this year, they accuse me of being a Trump supporter. (I have never voted for him.) I just don’t like the tone it sets at a festive time of year, and I choose not to participate. We’re getting older and it may be the last time I see some of them, but the political rants just squash the spirit of the season. I feel I can’t say anything because it’s their home and their party. How do you suggest I navigate this? No Grinches Dear No Grinches: While it’s true that it’s their home, as a guest and as a family member, you can ask for what you need in order to feel comfortable and welcome. Start with a phone call. Tell them you value them and want to spend time with them, but that you find that the political debate wears on you and detracts from the holiday. Don’t get into the who-said-what of it all. For the moment, let’s leave voting records out of it. This is a conversation about how to have a conversation. Ask them if they’d consider focusing on family, connectivity and celebration this year. Now, some families connect and celebrate by debating. And maybe everyone in your family is like this, save for you. It’s still possible to modulate. But it’s going to take a conscious awareness of the patterns they fall into and a mutual decision to try something new. Send questions to R. Eric Thomas at eric@askingericletter at rericthomas. com.

Lamar Jackson Will ‘Talk To’ Ravens About Growing Problem

He knows there’s a problem, but Baltimore Ravens franchise quarterback Lamar Jackson can still take being sacked 23 times already this season with good humor. At least for now, but the two-time NFL MVP revealed a conversation is coming between himself and his offensive line. Jackson spoke with reporters on Thursday, November 20, one day after missing practice again with what turned out to be an ankle injury. The Ravens were being cautious with their star asset, but Jackson was upbeat after participating in the latest session, even when the issue of crumbling protection was mentioned. As ESPN’s Jamison Hensley noted, Jackson said, “I’m going to talk to my offensive line about that.” Although Hensley was quick to point out Jackson uttered these words “with a smile,” the growing numbers of hits he’s taking is a problem the Ravens can’t ignore. Especially in the context of the team still needing to carefully manage his health. Lamar Jackson Has a Problem Getting hit and staying under siege in the pocket is an uncomfortable, but familiar reality for Jackson this season. He was sacked five times against the Cleveland Browns in Week 11, with four of those QB takedowns by star defensive end Myles Garrett. Those aren’t the numbers head coach John Harbaugh wants to see when Jackson is struggling to overcome nagging injuries. Making it all the way back from hamstring, knee and ankle problems is proving a challenge, particularly when it comes to dealing with the midweek practice schedule. Jackson’s health is becoming a weekly hot topic. Fortunately, he admitted he’s “good” ahead of facing the New York Jets in Week 12, per Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic, yet the latter noted Jackson also “said given he’s been banged up, this could be his new normal this season with taking a day off from practice but noted ‘We’ll have to see what coach feels about it.’” Keeping Jackson out of the fray during the week might be necessary fitness management by the Ravens, but there could be drawbacks. Those risks would include Jackson not being in peak playing condition on gamedays, or over-exerting himself after a light pre-game workload. Those theories will be put to the test when the Jets visit M&T Bank Stadium on November 23. They still boast a capable defensive front, but Jackson will be able to count on an All-Pro presence looking after his blindside. Ravens Get Good News Along Struggling Offensive Line Getting Jackson fully healthy and keeping him upright are the priorities for the Ravens, but the latter won’t happen without Ronnie Stanley at 100 percent. The 31-year-old was a full participant on Thursday, after missing practice a day earlier due to illness, according to the Ravens’ latest injury report. Stanley has been far from his best this season, but he can still be one of the more accomplished left tackles in the NFL. His ability to handle Jets edge-rushers Jermaine Johnson II and Will McDonald IV will be key to how Jackson performs. Another underrated boost to Jackson’s chances to thrive is the inclusion of running back Justice Hill as a full participant after a toe injury. Hill still does most of his work in third-down situations, where the useful veteran remains an excellent blocker.

Lakers Coach JJ Redick Gives Encouraging Update on Luka Doncic’s Injury

Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick shared a promising update on Luka Doncic‘s injury ahead of Friday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Doncic was favoring his right groin late in the Lakers’ opening night loss to the Golden State Warriors. According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, coach JJ Redick told reporters after Wednesday’s practice that Doncic was a full participant. Redick described the injury as minor, but the Slovenian superstar did undergo treatment.

“He seems to be fine. I don’t think it’s anything major. He got some treatment this morning, and we didn’t practice long, but he was a participant in practice,” Redick said.

This was an encouraging update, considering Doncic’s previous issues with muscle-related injuries last season. He underwent a different offseason regimen this past summer, focusing on his body, health, and conditioning. The hard work and dedication paid off based on how well Doncic performed for Slovenia at the 2025 EuroBasket.

He also looked fantastic in the Lakers’ season opener against the Warriors, finishing with 43 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists. However, it wasn’t enough to prevent a 119-109 defeat.

### Doncic Downplays Injury

Speaking at the postgame press conference on Tuesday, Luka Doncic was asked about his injury and whether it was serious. Doncic downplayed the issue and called it “nothing.” He said it was a hip issue but sounded very optimistic.

“It’s probably nothing. Just felt it a little bit because my hip went (the opposite) way. Felt it a little bit, but it’s probably nothing,” Doncic said.

Obviously, some Lakers fans were concerned to see Doncic uncomfortable and in pain. The franchise has heavily invested in “The Don” this offseason, signing him to a three-year, $165 million extension, according to Spotrac.

The Lakers were already without LeBron James, who has been dealing with sciatica since late July to early August. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported earlier this week that James is targeting a return to action by mid-November.

According to Fox Sports, Doncic has had multiple injuries to his calf, knee, back, ankle, groin, and quad since December 25, 2024.

### Lakers’ Depth In Question

The Lakers entered the 2025-26 NBA season filled with hope after Luka Doncic signed an extension and LeBron James opted into the final year of his contract. However, CBS Sports’ Brad Botkin pointed out after the Lakers’ opening night loss to the Warriors that the team’s depth isn’t strong.

With James out, coach JJ Redick cannot solely rely on Doncic and Austin Reaves for the majority of their offense.

“You simply cannot rely on two dudes combining for 69 points, 18 assists and 17 rebounds while logging a combined 76 minutes, especially if you’re still losing the game. Those are not sustainable numbers through any lens,” Botkin wrote.

Redick will have to find ways to get their role players going, especially Rui Hachimura and Gabe Vincent, who both started against the Warriors. Hachimura had nine points in 36 minutes, while Vincent produced just two points in 29 minutes.

The Lakers’ ability to find additional contributors will be crucial as they navigate the challenges of the season without their star players at full health.
