The Atlanta Hawks entered their game against the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday aiming to snap a two-game losing streak and get back into the win column. However, their chances took a hit when star point guard Trae Young left the game early due to a knee injury.
Before exiting the game, Young made an impressive play by delivering an incredible pass to teammate Luke Kennard, who confidently drained an open three-point shot. Young’s injury occurred late in the first quarter, shortly after that key assist to Kennard.
As of the third quarter, the game remained tightly contested, with the Hawks holding a slim lead despite Young’s absence.
Now in his eighth NBA season, Trae Young is coming off his second consecutive All-Star appearance and his fourth overall. He has the option to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason if he declines his player option. Notably, the Hawks and Young were unable to agree on a contract extension before the season began.
Through the four games played so far this season, Young had been averaging roughly 33 minutes per game, putting up 20.8 points, 2.3 rebounds, 9.5 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. However, his shooting efficiency had been somewhat below expectations. Before leaving the Nets game, Young had scored six points, grabbed one rebound, and recorded one assist.
As for Luke Kennard, this is his first season with the Hawks after signing as a free agent during the offseason. Alongside the trade for Kristaps Porzingis and the addition of Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Kennard’s signing highlighted the Hawks’ intent to compete in the Eastern Conference this year.
Kennard has also appeared in all four games, averaging a little over 23 minutes per game. He’s contributed 6.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game, shooting 47.4% from the field, 30% from three-point range, and 100% from the free-throw line.
The Hawks will now hope to rally without their star as they look to secure a much-needed victory against the Nets.
