Bitterly Cold Temperatures to Sweep Chicago Area This Weekend
The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory for northern and central Illinois and northwest Indiana from 8 p.m. Saturday through noon Sunday. Wind chills are expected to fall between –15°F and –25°F Saturday night, with the coldest conditions in northwest Illinois. Temperatures will remain below zero on Sunday.
Chicago Bears Game Forecast
When the Chicago Bears take on the Cleveland Browns at Soldier Field on Sunday at noon, forecasters predict a high of just 12°F. Lows will dip back into the single digits by nightfall, making it one of the coldest games in the stadium’s history.
Health and Safety Concerns
Dangerously cold wind chills can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. The National Weather Service recommends:
• Dressing in layers, including a warm hat and insulated gloves
• Limiting time outdoors and taking frequent warm-up breaks
• Checking on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors
Local Preparations
• Some suburbs have canceled activities and holiday events planned for the weekend.
• The city of Chicago has opened several warming centers on Saturday and Sunday, including libraries and Chicago Park District locations.
• The Garfield Community Service Center at 10 South Kedzie Ave. is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• All Chicago Police Department districts are open 24 hours a day for anyone seeking shelter.
Looking Ahead
The National Weather Service says temperatures should rebound by midweek, rising back into the 30s and potentially the 40s by Wednesday or Thursday.
