Storm batters Istanbul, disrupts transport across western Türkiye

A powerful storm struck Istanbul on January 8, unleashing strong winds, towering waves, and widespread disruption to sea transport. The severe weather also impacted several other provinces across western Türkiye.

Following warnings issued by the Turkish State Meteorological Service, gale-force winds began sweeping through Istanbul during the morning hours. These conditions quickly intensified over the Bosphorus and the Marmara Sea.

In Beşiktaş, large waves battered the shoreline, creating hazardous conditions along the coast. As a result, maritime operations came to a standstill due to treacherous sea conditions that made navigation impossible.

Passenger boat services between Beşiktaş and Kadıköy were suspended, with multiple cancellations also announced by various ferry lines. The storm’s impact has significantly affected daily commuting and sea transport in the region.
