How older Mainers decide when to downsize, stop driving or ask for help

Sherlyn Morrissette said she was in no condition to make decisions after her husband died three years ago. It was her children who told her she should come to Maine and live near them instead of staying in her home in rural Lyndonville, Vermont. Looking back, she’s very glad they did.

“When you lose a spouse after 56 years, you’re just numb, and you feel like you can’t make decisions,” said Morrissette, 82, who lives at OceanView, a retirement community in Falmouth. “I can’t tell you how much it affects your mind. I was very unbalanced, and I was constantly falling.”

“I think if I stayed there by myself I would have probably become very, very depressed,” she said.

Even though she didn’t decide on her own to move out of her home, Morrissette said she can see many reasons why it made sense for her. She’s a healthy, active, social person who now has many people to talk to every day and a calendar full of activities, including trips to plays, musicals, and Portland Sea Dogs games.

We all could face difficult decisions as we get older, including whether we want to or are able to live alone or whether we want or can afford to live in a senior living community or other facility. Health problems or failing eyesight may force us to give up driving. A desire to plan for the end of life will likely have us considering wills or trusts and health care directives.

Those who work with aging Mainers say one way to start thinking about these decisions is to talk to people who’ve already made them — about what factors they considered or what problems they dealt with.

Paula Hodgdon, 97, taught physical education and coached at the University of Southern Maine. She lived alone in her home in Hollis before moving to Scarborough Terrace last year. She said her family was worried about her living alone, but she wasn’t; she had friends and neighbors who would bring her things she needed, and she felt comfortable there.

But she said she decided to “try” living in a senior living community to see what it was like.

“They thought it would be a good idea for me to come here, but I didn’t really want to do it at first. So they said ‘Just try it,’” said Hodgdon. “After being here, I’ve changed my mind and decided it’s a very good place to be, because they take care of anything you need.”

According to the Maine Health Care Association, there were 1,000 assisted living and residential care centers in Maine as of July, varying in size from a few beds to more than 100. Among the residents of all those facilities:

– 49% were over the age of 85
– 30% were between the ages of 75 and 84
– 15% were between the ages of 65 and 74
– About 7% were younger than 65

Hodgdon’s friend and fellow retired USM professor Jim Pendleton, 93, also came to Scarborough Terrace recently. Health issues had forced him to stop driving a few years ago, and his wife became his driver. But she died last year.

In 2022, about 93% of people 65 and older in Maine had their driver’s licenses, according to a project done by the Maine Council on Aging with data from the Maine Department of the Secretary of State. For people 80 and older, 72% had licenses that year.

Pendleton said he had fallen a few times and decided that it would be better for him not to live alone in his Buxton home. He also didn’t want family worrying about him.

Besides moving into Scarborough Terrace, Pendleton wrote a health care directive so his children would know what sort of care he wants and doesn’t want near the end of life. He’s also given his children his power of attorney.

He said that will make anything that happens to him, including dying, easier and less complicated for his family.

“If you don’t have those kinds of things in place, you just make it miserable for your family,” said Pendleton, who taught geology. “Just because you’re dead doesn’t mean you don’t care about your kids.”

Giving someone power of attorney gives them broad authority to handle all your financial and legal matters, like paying bills or managing investments. An advance health care directive is focused more narrowly, giving someone the authority to make health care decisions and laying out your own wishes on end-of-life care.

Having either document gives a person confidence that someone they trust will be making decisions for them if they can’t, people who work with seniors say. It also means your family will know exactly what your end-of-life wishes are and helps avoid disagreements or court battles among family members.

Morrissette has not given up driving and has no plans to. She’s healthy and has fun at the wheel of her bright blue Audi convertible. She’s also planning to take a trip soon to Antarctica.

Physically, she feels like she could live alone. But being able to live in an active community and see so many people every day has helped raise her spirits and energy.

“I meet a lot of people who have very uplifting attitudes and live life to the fullest,” said Morrissette.

Coinbase, Binance Among Exchanges Targeted for Widened AML Checks by French Regulator: Bloomberg

France is intensifying its scrutiny of cryptocurrency exchanges with expanded anti-money laundering (AML) checks aimed at determining which platforms will be granted European Union (EU)-wide licensing, Bloomberg reported on Friday.

Among the exchanges under review are Coinbase (COIN) and Binance, according to sources familiar with the matter. Since late 2024, the French Prudential Supervision and Resolution Authority (ACPR) has been conducting on-site inspections and has instructed Binance to strengthen its risk controls.

Failure to meet the ACPR’s requirements could jeopardize an exchange’s ability to obtain a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license from France. This license is crucial as it allows firms to offer cryptocurrency services across the entire EU. Companies have until the end of June next year to secure this license.

A Binance spokesperson commented via email: “Engagement with the ACPR is an ongoing component of operating as an AML-registered company and AML framework reviews are a routine part of the ACPR’s regulatory oversight. The ACPR is conducting these checks across dozens of exchanges, as further detailed in their 2024 annual report.”

Neither Coinbase nor the ACPR responded to requests for comment from CoinDesk.

ASTER, HYPE Continue to Drop as Bitcoin Price Stabilizes at $107K: Weekend Watch.

It was another bloody Friday in the cryptocurrency markets, as Bitcoin dumped to a multi-month low (on most exchanges) at under $104,000. The altcoins were smashed even harder, with massive price declines from the likes of ETH, BNB, XRP, SOL, DOGE, and many others.

### BTC Calms at $107K

The overall market-wide calamity began last Friday when BTC dumped from $122,000 to $110,000 or down to $101,000 on exchanges like Binance. It bounced off last weekend and remained above $110,000.

Bitcoin kept climbing at the start of the business week and peaked at $116,000 on Monday and Tuesday. However, it faced an immediate and painful rejection at that point, which drove it south to $110,000. Although that support line held at first, the bears kept the pedal to the metal, and it gave way on Thursday evening.

The landscape only worsened on Friday when Bitcoin slumped first to $108,000 and then below $104,000, marking a three-month low (again, on most exchanges).

After such a substantial collapse, some positive macro news emerged: US President Trump announced that the tariffs he introduced on China last week won’t stand. BTC reacted with an immediate bounce to over $106,000 and has since added another grand.

Nevertheless, Bitcoin’s market cap has slipped to $2.130 trillion, while its dominance over the altcoins stands at 57.3%.

### Altcoins Still Struggle

Although most altcoins have recovered some ground from their lows marked yesterday, the overall picture remains grim.

– ETH is below $3,900 after a minor decline over the last 24 hours.
– BNB has lost the $1,100 support level following a 3% drop.
– TRX, DOGE, ADA, LINK, HYPE, BCH, SUI, AVAX, and HBAR are also in the red.
– XRP, SOL, and XLM managed to post minor gains.

Among the worst performers, COAI has dumped by another 17% in the past 24 hours, followed by AAVE (-5.3%) and ASTER (-5%).

In contrast, ENA surged by 12.5%, followed by TAO, which rose 8%.

The total crypto market cap has recovered to just over $3.7 trillion on CoinGecko but is still down by roughly $500 billion since last Friday.

The cryptocurrency landscape remains volatile, with Bitcoin trying to stabilize amid broad-based altcoin weakness. Investors will be watching closely for signs of next week’s direction.

The secrets to packing fragile items from Paso Robles self-storage

**Expert Packing Tips from River Road Mini Storage to Protect Your Fragile Treasures**

*PASO ROBLES, Calif., Oct. 18, 2025 /PRNewswire-PRWeb* — We all have delicate and fragile items that bring us joy — whether it’s a beautiful hand-blown Venetian glass bowl purchased on vacation, a charming ceramic giraffe snagged for $2 at a local yard sale, or a peacock-patterned dish set bought online. No matter the cost or who gave it to us, these treasures hold a special place in our hearts. When they break, it feels like a piece of us breaks, too.

Rick Runnells, owner of River Road Mini Storage in Paso Robles, shares expert packing tips to help you avoid the heartbreak of discovering cracked or broken items when unpacking after a move or storage.

**Careful Packing is Key**

Packing fragile items carefully with the right materials is essential. Use bubble wrap, packing paper, or foam to cushion your items securely inside sturdy boxes. Proper labeling is equally vital—clearly mark boxes containing fragile items to ensure they receive appropriate handling.

**Safe Handling and Storage Make a Difference**

“Storing boxes of fragile items is just as important as proper packing,” says Rick Runnells. If you are storing these boxes at home, consider dedicating a closet or an enclosed section of your garage exclusively for fragile items. Label the area for added awareness and protection.

When moving, keep fragile boxes separate from other belongings. They should be the last boxes loaded onto the moving van and the first ones unloaded into storage or your new home. If using a storage unit, designate a specific section for these fragile boxes to keep them secure.

At your new place, placing all fragile boxes in one room or a dedicated corner helps keep them safe and accessible. This way, you’ll know exactly where your delicate possessions are and can unpack them carefully at your own pace.

Trump tells Zelenskyy he’s reluctant to sell Ukraine Tomahawk missiles after warning Russia he might

**Trump Signals Hesitation on Selling Tomahawk Missiles to Ukraine Amid White House Talks**

*Washington, D.C.* — President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Friday, October 17, 2025, for talks that signaled a shift in U.S. policy regarding the potential sale of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.

At the start of their meeting, Zelenskyy proposed a deal in which Ukraine would provide the United States with its advanced drones in exchange for Tomahawk cruise missiles—weaponry Ukrainian officials say is crucial to compelling Russian President Vladimir Putin to seriously engage in peace negotiations.

However, President Trump expressed hesitation about selling the missiles, citing national security concerns. “I have an obligation also to make sure that we’re completely stocked up as a country, because you never know what’s going to happen in war and peace,” Trump said. He added, “We’d much rather have them not need Tomahawks. We’d much rather have the war be over to be honest.”

Following the meeting, Trump called for an immediate cessation of hostilities between Ukraine and Russia. In a Truth Social post, he stated, “Enough blood has been shed, with property lines being defined by War and Guts. They should stop where they are. Let both claim Victory, let History decide!”

Zelenskyy echoed the call for a ceasefire and negotiations but carefully refrained from fully embracing an immediate end to the war. “The president is right we have to stop where we are, and then to speak,” Zelenskyy told reporters.

The two leaders, along with Vice President JD Vance, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and other aides, held a discussion that extended over two hours during a lunch in the White House Cabinet Room—far longer than initially planned.

Zelenskyy congratulated Trump on securing last week’s ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza, noting that Trump now has significant momentum to help end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. “President Trump now has a big chance to finish this war,” Zelenskyy said.

Recent days saw a fluctuating stance from Trump regarding the provision of Tomahawk missiles. While he initially appeared open to supplying Ukraine with the missiles, following his Thursday phone call with Putin, Trump started downplaying the likelihood of their delivery.

During the call, Putin warned that supplying Kyiv with Tomahawks “won’t change the situation on the battlefield, but would cause substantial damage to the relationship between our countries,” according to Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s foreign policy adviser.

The Tomahawk missiles, which have a range of about 995 miles (1,600 kilometers), would enable Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory targeting military sites, energy infrastructure, and other key assets. Ukrainian officials see the missiles as a critical lever to pressure Putin toward peace talks.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha commented that discussions about the Tomahawks have already had a positive effect by pushing Russia toward negotiations. “The conclusion is that we need to continue with strong steps. Strength can truly create momentum for peace,” Sybiha said on the social media platform X.

This latest White House meeting marks the fourth face-to-face encounter between Trump and Zelenskyy since the former Republican president returned to office in January, and their second meeting in less than a month.

Following his call with Putin, Trump announced plans to meet the Russian president soon in Budapest, Hungary, to further discuss ways to end the war. The two leaders also agreed that their senior aides, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, would convene next week at an unspecified location.

When asked whether Zelenskyy would participate in the proposed Hungary talks, Trump responded that it was “to be determined,” suggesting that a separate, “double meeting” involving both leaders might be the most feasible path to productive negotiations.

“These two leaders do not like each other, and we want to make it comfortable for everybody,” Trump said.

Prior to his recent calls, Trump showed growing frustration with Putin. Last month, he shifted his stance by stating he believes Ukraine could reclaim all its territory lost to Russia—a significant change from his earlier position urging Kyiv to make concessions for peace.

Since launching his 2024 campaign, Trump has promised to end the war swiftly. His peace initiative appeared to gain traction following summits with Putin in Alaska and subsequent meetings with Zelenskyy and European allies in Washington last August. At the time, Trump was confident he was paving the way for direct talks between the two leaders.

However, Putin has yet to express willingness to meet Zelenskyy, and Russia has intensified its military assault on Ukraine in recent weeks.

When asked if he felt Putin may be stringing him along, Trump acknowledged the possibility but expressed confidence in handling the Russian leader. “I’ve been played all my life by the best of them, and I came out pretty well,” he said. “I think I’m pretty good at this stuff.”

Jupiter Unveils Ultra V3, Its Most Powerful Solana Trading Engine Yet

Jupiter Unveils Ultra V3, Its Most Powerful Solana Trading Engine Yet

Jupiter has launched Ultra V3, its next-generation trading engine designed to elevate execution quality across Solana’s DeFi markets. This major update introduces advanced meta aggregation, predictive execution, and enhanced defenses against sandwich attacks, marking a significant leap toward faster, safer, and more transparent trading on Solana.

**Iris Router and Predictive Execution: Smarter Crypto Pricing**

At the heart of Ultra V3 lies the Iris router, which replaces Jupiter’s former Metis routing system. Iris aggregates data from multiple routers—including JupiterZ, DFlow, Hashflow, and OKX—to secure the best on-chain prices available. Employing sophisticated mathematical methods such as the Golden-section and Brent’s algorithms, Iris achieves up to 100 times better routing performance.

JupiterZ, the platform’s proprietary RFQ system processing roughly $100 million in daily volume, now integrates exclusively with Ultra V3. Combined, these technologies enable more accurate trade execution with minimal slippage, effectively narrowing the gap between quoted prices and actual trade outcomes.

Further enhancing this is the Predictive Execution feature, which prioritizes optimal trade routes by simulating real-time results ahead of trade confirmation. This approach helps prevent quote inflation issues common on decentralized exchanges, ensuring users receive authentic market execution prices. Jupiter reports that this model results in consistent positive slippage, outperforming competitors that often experience negative averages.

**ShadowLane and Gasless Trading: Speed and Security for Solana Users**

Another core innovation is ShadowLane, Jupiter’s proprietary transaction landing engine optimized for speed and precision. By handling trade execution internally—without relying on external relays or third-party order flow processors—ShadowLane delivers a threefold increase in successful trade landings and slashes latency to as low as 50 milliseconds.

Ultra V3 significantly strengthens protection against miner extractable value (MEV) exploits, offering 34 times better sandwich attack defense compared to other terminals. The new Real-Time Slippage Estimator (RTSE) dynamically adjusts slippage settings to maintain smooth transaction flows, even during volatile market conditions.

Additionally, Ultra V3 expands gasless trading capabilities. Users can now execute swaps without holding SOL, as Jupiter automatically deducts gas fees directly from the trade value. This upgrade supports Token-2022 assets and facilitates smaller trade sizes, making decentralized finance more accessible to users with smaller wallets.

**Seamless Integration Across Jupiter’s Ecosystem**

Ultra V3 is fully integrated across Jupiter’s web, mobile, desktop, and API platforms. It also powers Jupiter Pro tools such as Terminal, Screener, and Analytics, catering to professional traders by ensuring consistent experiences and deeper data insights across devices.

By combining precise execution, robust on-chain safety, and enhanced user accessibility, Ultra V3 raises the standard for Solana-based DeFi infrastructure. The update is already live across Jupiter’s entire product suite and is available to both retail and institutional users.

Experience faster, safer, and smarter trading on Solana with Jupiter Ultra V3 today.

Analysts Caution Cardano (ADA) May Drop Further Before $1 Rebound After 12% Dip

Cardano (ADA) experienced a significant decline this week, falling roughly 27% and slipping below the key $0.66 support level amid risk-off flows impacting the broader crypto market. Bitcoin’s recent slide toward $104,000, coupled with softer altcoin liquidity, exacerbated the downside pressure. On-chain data further reveals that large ADA holders are adopting a defensive stance.

### Whale Activity Shows Mixed Signals

Santiment-tracked wallets holding between 1 and 10 million ADA have offloaded approximately 40 million ADA over the past seven days. More broadly, whale distribution reportedly reached around 350 million ADA, adding to downward pressure on the price. However, there is a contrasting dynamic as other significant wallets have accumulated between 140 and 200 million ADA. This split in whale activity is contributing to a choppy consolidation pattern, with ADA fluctuating between $0.65 and $0.70.

### Derivatives Market Adds to Caution

The derivatives market reflects a cautious tone as well. Cardano’s open interest dropped by 2.12% to $669.9 million. Notably, long liquidations totaling $1.13 million significantly outpaced short liquidations of $187,000, indicating that bulls have borne the brunt of the recent sell-off.

On the 4-hour chart, ADA is forming a falling wedge pattern, but confirmation requires a breakout above $0.74. Momentum indicators present a mixed picture: the RSI stands at 37, approaching oversold territory, while the Chaikin Money Flow (CMF) remains positive between 0.12 and 0.15. This suggests some returning spot inflows, though these have yet to overwhelm supply from large holders.

### Downside Risks and Potential Rebounds

Technicians emphasize a “risk-first” approach in the near term. Losing the $0.66 level puts $0.65 in play. A failure to hold $0.65 could open the path to $0.62-$0.60, and then down to $0.57, where channel and structural support converge. In the event of a broader crypto market weakness, an even deeper shakeout could test $0.53.

On the upside, ADA must reclaim $0.66 and subsequently clear the $0.74-$0.80 range, which aligns with the 50-day EMA cluster to signal a reversal in trend strength. Above this level, bulls may target $0.86, with a psychological retest of $1.00 possible into Q4 if risk appetite and capital flows improve.

Several analysts remain optimistic, eyeing a potential breakout toward the $1.20-$1.60 range. However, most caution that the market may experience further dips before a significant upward move, due to leverage resets and uneven liquidity conditions.

### Upcoming Catalysts and Market Outlook

Key factors to watch include the October 23 Grayscale ADA ETF decision window, overall stablecoin and ETF net flows, and whether whale selling pressure eases. Historically, a rotation back into altcoins tends to follow Bitcoin stabilization. Conversely, renewed weakness in Bitcoin would likely prolong ADA’s consolidation near current lows.

ADA’s daily chart trends downward for now, but development progress continues. New staking access options (such as eToro US) and ongoing initiatives like Midnight and Leios are broadening Cardano’s roadmap. However, total value locked (TVL) on Cardano remains modest at around $288 million, lagging larger chains.
