Report warns reforms are fueling rise in Colorado violent crime

As part of efforts to lower its prison population, a recent report found that both incarceration rates and arrests in Colorado have declined sharply over the past decade. The state’s rate of recidivism—when a convicted criminal reoffends—has also decreased. However, this does not necessarily mean that crime is decreasing.

Instead, the report attributes these declines to a prioritization by lawmakers on leniency. This approach has largely led to reductions in recidivism, arrests, and the overall prison population.

“Over the past two decades, Colorado has pursued a steady course of criminal justice reform aimed at reducing the footprint of the state’s correctional system,” the report stated. “Lawmakers have prioritized leniency: lower sentences for drug offenses, expanded parole and probation opportunities, and restrictions on law enforcement discretion.”

This tension between enforcement and leniency is reflected in the state’s crime trends over the past decade. From 2014 to 2024, the number of arrests declined by nearly 30%. Similarly, Colorado’s recidivism rate fell by 40% between 2008 and 2019—ranking as the third-highest decline of any state nationwide.

“In 2008, Colorado had the country’s fifth highest recidivism rate,” said DJ Summers, the institute’s director of communications and research operations, during a press conference about the report on Tuesday. “Now the state’s recidivism has dropped to a more average rate.”

The decline in arrests has played a significant role in this progress. Between 2016 and 2024, the total number of inmates in Colorado’s prisons and jails decreased by 12%. This drop was largely due to a significant reduction in the prison population in 2020, when many inmates were released early amid public health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2020, the prison population has been slowly increasing again—though it remains below levels seen in the 2010s.

Despite these positive trends in incarceration and recidivism, the report warns that the overall picture is more complex. From 2014 to 2024, Colorado’s violent crime rate increased by more than 55%.

Looking more closely between December 2019 and December 2021, the report found that while the number of inmates in state prisons fell by over 20%, the violent crime rate rose nearly 25%.

“Arrest counts and violent crime have been shifting at inversely proportional rates, meaning that as arrests decrease, violent crime increases,” the report noted.

Summers added that Common Sense Institute conducted an analysis showing a “strong correlation” between decreases in arrests and prison population and increases in crime.

Furthermore, even with the decline in the recidivism rate, 31% of inmates released by the Colorado Department of Corrections still return to prison within three years.

The report argues that it is time to refocus the state’s priorities away from leniency and toward deterrence, accountability, and public safety.

“The state’s challenge is no longer to reduce its correctional footprint; it is to restore accountability and deterrence without abandoning compassion,” the report stated. “Colorado must find a middle ground between punitive excess and permissive neglect.”

5 chilling details about the Stanfa-Merlino fight shown in Netflix’s Mob War: Philadelphia vs. The Mafia

**Mob War: Philadelphia vs. The Mafia Puts the Stanfa-Merlino Fight Front and Center**

*Mob War: Philadelphia vs. The Mafia* is a gripping docuseries that tracks a violent contest for control of the Philadelphia mob. From brazen street attacks to taped meetings that reportedly pulled the war out of the shadows, the series lays out who rose, who fell, and why the bloodshed spread — all across three intense episodes.

Through interviews, surveillance footage, and courtroom outcomes, *Mob War* builds a tight timeline, following the story scene by scene with chilling detail.

### Case Background for *Mob War: Philadelphia vs. The Mafia*

After Nicky Scarfo’s 1987 arrest, a power vacuum formed in the Philadelphia mob. In 1991, John Stanfa, a Sicilian-born figure known for his old-school methods, took the reins. His side leaned on tradition and quiet money.

Opposing Stanfa was a younger crew led by Joey Merlino, who pushed back with flashy styles and, reportedly, a disregard for the old rules. By 1992 and 1993, tit-for-tat shootings began shaking South Philadelphia.

The series highlights investigators’ efforts to infiltrate this violent turf war using wires, cameras, and informants. As both camps plotted hits, recruited allies, and fought to control lucrative money routes, arrests, trials, and lengthy sentences followed.

### 5 Chilling Details in *Mob War: Philadelphia vs. The Mafia*

**1) The August 1993 Street Ambush That Killed Michael Ciancaglini**

On August 5, 1993, gunmen opened fire on a South Philadelphia block, killing Michael Ciancaglini and wounding Joey Merlino. The series uses period footage and firsthand recollections to show how this attack marked a hard turn in the war.

Talk of retaliation surged, and daily life around local clubhouses and diners grew tense as both sides braced for more gunfire.

**2) A Law Office Bug That Caught “Cosa Nostra” on Tape**

The FBI planted listening devices in the office of attorney Salvatore Avena, with judicial approval. On these recordings, Stanfa reportedly mentioned “Cosa Nostra,” a phrase traditionally denied by mob figures.

According to *The New York Times*, agents arrested Stanfa and others after building their case with covert audio and informant testimony. The series frames this tape as a key link between whispered plans and courtroom proof.

**3) A Drive-by Shooting That Targeted Stanfa and Left His Son Gravely Hurt**

Weeks after the Ciancaglini shooting, a drive-by attack targeted the Stanfa faction. While Stanfa survived, his son was seriously wounded. Sources in the series describe this brutal message: no one was safe — whether sitting in traffic or entering a corner café.

Both factions reportedly rearmed and shuffled routines to avoid the next burst of violence.

**4) John Veasey’s Flip After a Failed Butcher-Shop Hit**

Enforcer John Veasey appears in the series recounting contracts, near misses, and a shooting inside an apartment above a butcher shop. Though shot at close range, Veasey fought back and survived.

Following an attack that targeted his family, Veasey chose to cooperate with authorities. His testimony proved a turning point, connecting shootings to high-level orders and providing prosecutors with names, dates, and locations.

**5) Racketeering Verdicts That Closed the Book on This War**

The series concludes with courtroom outcomes. In 1995, a jury found Stanfa guilty on racketeering charges including murder and attempted murder. According to *The New York Times*, he received a life sentence.

Years later, Merlino was convicted on racketeering charges and sentenced to 14 years. With the mob war’s leaders behind bars and street violence cooling, the ripples of this conflict continued to be felt.

*Mob War: Philadelphia vs. The Mafia* presents these events through interviews, surveillance clips, wiretap audio, and reenactments, offering a detailed and compelling look at one of Philadelphia’s most violent mob wars.

The series is currently streaming on Netflix.

Prince Andrew Begged Staff and Pals to ‘Arrange Girls’ to Have Sex With Him — With ‘Blondes’ and ‘Ballerinas’ His Favored Type

**Prince Andrew Allegedly Had Network of Allies Arranging Women for Him, New Claims Reveal**

*Published: Oct. 23, 2025, 4:00 p.m. ET*

Prince Andrew reportedly had a network of close allies who “arranged girls” for him to have sex with, according to new claims revealed by RadarOnline.com. The disgraced royal, nicknamed “Randy Andy,” allegedly begged staff and friends to hook him up with various women, showing a particular preference for “blondes” and “ballerinas.”

### Preference for ‘Blondes’ and ‘Ballerinas’

The former Duke of York, who was forced last week to give up all his titles amid the ongoing Jeffrey Epstein scandal, urged everyone around him to find women he could date. According to biographer Andrew Lownie, this behavior led to Andrew sleeping with women “he didn’t realize were prostitutes.”

Even his personal protection officers (PPOs), paid for by British taxpayers, were reportedly involved in these efforts. In Lownie’s new book, *The Rise and Fall of the House of York*, he writes:

> “He would spy out an attractive ballerina at the Royal Ballet and then send his (PPO) … to invite her to meet the prince.”

Other tactics reportedly included sending aides to invite women to his table at London nightclub Chinawhite or to join him in his hotel suite while abroad.

### Following Orders

Lownie also notes that Andrew’s staff frequently requested that attractive women be invited to events. A private secretary reportedly specified, “He likes blondes,” to which one consul responded, “I’m a diplomat, not a pimp.”

Andrew, 65, resigned as the U.K.’s special trade envoy back in 2011 after criticism of his ties to multimillionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. However, during his travels in this role, Lownie claims:

> “It was rumored Andrew brought women with him and that he liked to stay in hotels rather than the (Royal) Residence, as it gave him more independence in whom he saw, whether women or businessmen.”

Stories circulate of escorts, masquerading as professional women, being provided for him to choose from.

### Andrew Always on the Prowl?

Andrew was also reportedly close to Epstein’s associate and madam Ghislaine Maxwell. He allegedly “exploited” his royal connections, including his position as patron of the English National Ballet (ENB). According to one ENB staffer, Andrew had been somewhat “foisted” on the organization after Princess Diana passed away in 1997.

His interest, it seems, was more in the dancers than the ballet itself. Lownie writes:

> “When he did attend, he insisted on choosing who would sit with him in the royal box.”

The ballet official added:

> “The names were not given to the ENB. It was suspected they consisted of mistresses, one a yoga teacher, and various businessmen. The chairman was allowed in at intermission for a drink.”

### Allegations by Epstein Victim Virginia Giuffre

Virginia Giuffre, a victim of Jeffrey Epstein who tragically died by suicide in April at age 41, claimed she was forced to sleep with Andrew three times. She reiterated these claims in her memoir, published posthumously this week.

Andrew, who settled a civil suit with Giuffre in the U.S. in 2022 by paying out millions, continues to deny these allegations.

### Andrew Relinquishes Titles Amid Ongoing Accusations

In the days before the publication of Lownie’s book, Andrew announced he was giving up his titles, including the Duke of York. He stated that the “continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.”

Wallets Tied to Melania Trump Meme Coin Airdropped $1.2 Million in Meteora Tokens

Meteora Debuts Token with Controversial Airdrops to Melania and President Trump Meme Coin Wallets

On Thursday, Meteora officially launched its token, MET, distributing it through an airdrop to various users. The project emphasized its efforts to blacklist “malicious bad actors” from receiving tokens. However, the airdrop raised eyebrows within the crypto community when two wallets linked to the controversial Melania Trump meme coin received $1.2 million worth of MET tokens.

According to SolScan data, the wallets named melania-liquidity1.sol and melania-liquidity2.sol were credited with $784,200 and $454,724 of MET, respectively, totaling approximately $1.23 million. Both wallets are identified as part of the Official Melania Meme entity on the blockchain analytics platform Arkham Intelligence. Shortly after receiving the tokens, these wallets transferred the funds to various other addresses, sparking concern among observers.

In addition, three wallets connected to the President Trump meme coin were airdropped MET tokens totaling $4.2 million. These wallets were among the top five recipients of the airdrop and subsequently deposited their tokens to the exchange OKX, making it difficult to track their on-chain activity.

The episode drew criticism on social media. A user on X questioned, “Why is Hayden Davis getting a MET airdrop? You have to be kidding me,” referring to the CEO of Kelsier Ventures, the company that helped launch MELANIA. Meteora co-lead, Soju, responded by pointing out that the LIBRA launch wallets were excluded from receiving tokens, just an hour before the MELANIA-linked wallets received MET.

The timing of these controversial airdrops comes shortly after Meteora co-founder Benjamin Chow was named in a class action lawsuit filed by investors who allege he masterminded a “scam coin” operation involving at least 15 tokens. These tokens included well-known meme coins such as MELANIA, LIBRA, and ENRON, all of which experienced significant crashes soon after launch.

Court filings state that the operation, conducted under the Meteora name, was separate from the company’s legitimate automated market maker business. Benjamin Chow has since stepped down from his leadership role at Meteora. The company’s co-founder, Meow, cited “a lack of judgment and care” as reasons for his resignation.

The MELANIA token itself gained rapid attention after its launch. Just two days after President Trump introduced his meme coin in January 2024, former First Lady Melania Trump promoted a Solana-based meme coin using her name as its ticker. The token surged to nearly a $7 billion market cap before crashing by 99% to approximately $80 million in the following months.

Further scrutiny emerged after Argentinian President Javier Milei promoted a similar failed meme coin in February. On-chain analytics firm Bubblemaps linked this token back to MELANIA, which led to a fraud and racketeering class action lawsuit against the involved parties.

Meteora has worked with on-chain forensic teams, including sleuth Dethective and anti-scam tool Rugcheck, to prevent tokens from reaching malicious actors. Despite these efforts, it appears the Melania-linked wallets slipped through the cracks. None of the mentioned parties—Soju, Meteora, Dethective, or Rugcheck—immediately responded to requests for comment from Decrypt.

Despite the controversy, many airdrop recipients praised the MET token launch, noting a smooth claim process and sizable token allocations. Currently, MET ranks as the 269th largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, valued at $263.2 million, according to CoinGecko.

However, criticisms have grown regarding the airdrops sent to wallets tied to the President Trump meme coin team. Although this meme coin has not yet been subject to fraud lawsuits, it has become embroiled in political debates, including allegations of conflicts of interest and potential foreign influence.

As Meteora moves forward with its token launch, the community and investors remain watchful of further developments, particularly concerning the project’s past leadership and connections to controversial meme coin endeavors.

Jack Smith calls Republicans’ bluff with request to testify — on one condition

Former special counsel Jack Smith is calling Republicans’ bluff, turning the tables Thursday by requesting to testify publicly in open hearings before the House and Senate Judiciary Committees. Smith’s attorneys made the request this week in a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA).

“As described by various Senators, the toll data collection was narrowly tailored and limited to the four days from January 4, 2021 to January 7, 2021, with a focus on telephonic activity during the period immediately surrounding the January 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol,” Smith’s lawyers wrote.

Grassley has accused Smith of improperly spying on Republican lawmakers during the Department of Justice investigation and prosecution of President Donald Trump.

“I think it’s important that he’s speaking up in a way to kind of demystify what has been grossly misrepresented to the American people by the senators,” former FBI Deputy Director and CNN senior law enforcement analyst Andrew McCabe said Thursday on CNN’s *The Arena* with anchor Kasie Hunt.

In that testimony from a few weeks ago, McCabe explained, “Toll records are a very rudimentary kind of first step investigative technique in many, many, many, almost all investigations. And it’s typically done early in an investigation when you have an allegation and you’re trying to determine — you’re trying to vet an allegation to even see if there’s something worth investigating.”

He added, “So if someone comes to you, let’s say a situation like this, if someone makes an allegation that they have information that the president contacted a particular senator in the process of trying to stall the Congress’s work on certifying the election, one way to vet that information would be to get toll records, to see if there was actually telephonic contact between those people.”

Smith’s public testimony could shed light and clarify what happened in the investigation and the methods behind it, McCabe said.

“And after you’ve proved that if there’s no contact, then you know not to go down that investigative avenue. If there is contact, then there are, of course, more techniques that you can use to get to the bottom of it,” he added.

“I should also say that it takes a grand jury subpoena to acquire those records. This is not something that a prosecutor or an FBI agent just dreams up off the top of their heads and, you know, calls up the phone company and says, ‘Hey, send us everything you have.’ There is a process. These records are accessed lawfully under the purview of the grand jury. So as I said, I think it was grossly misrepresented in that hearing.”

Rui Hachimura makes eye-opening admission about Lakers’ chemistry

**Lakers Work Through Chemistry Issues as LeBron James Sidelined with Injury**

*LOS ANGELES* — During the preseason, the Los Angeles Lakers only had their full lineup, minus LeBron James, for one game—the final preseason game of their schedule. Over a full slate of six preseason games this season, the Lakers saw key players in and out of the lineup, making it challenging to build on-court chemistry.

That chemistry—or lack thereof—was evident during the Lakers’ opening night loss to the Golden State Warriors this week. Rui Hachimura addressed the team’s ongoing process of developing cohesion after adding key rotational players during the offseason.

“We just started. This is probably the second game we actually played together with everybody,” Hachimura said following the Lakers’ 119-109 loss on Tuesday. “We’re still trying to figure out our rhythm. Everybody, we’re still trying to get to know each other. We had a lot of practices, especially to go against Golden State—they’ve been playing together for probably four or five years, so that was the difference.”

“Other than that, I think we did a lot of things that we were supposed to do,” he continued. “It’s a process. We’re going to be better.”

In the game against the Warriors, Hachimura posted a solid stat line with nine points, four rebounds, and three assists while shooting 3-of-6 from the field—all three-pointers.

With LeBron James sidelined for at least four weeks due to a nerve injury, Hachimura is expected to see an increased role and greater opportunity in the lineup.

Despite James’ absence, Lakers head coach JJ Redick emphasized that Hachimura’s role will remain consistent. “Same plan as always,” Redick said. “We’re not gonna ask a guy to change their role because someone is out of the lineup. He’s got to stick to doing what he does best.”

For Hachimura, excelling off the ball alongside the Lakers’ primary ball-handlers and playmakers has been key. Whether it’s spotting up for catch-and-shoot three-pointers or making timely, forceful cuts along the baseline, Hachimura has established himself as one of the Lakers’ better off-ball scoring threats.

Hachimura acknowledged the importance of continuing to capitalize on these off-ball opportunities. “Catch-and-shoot is going to be a lot, but also you saw last year I had a lot of back cuts, cutting to the rim,” he said. “Those are going to start coming—you just can’t do it right away. You have to kind of figure out the space first. We have a [Deandre Ayton] in the paint. It’s a little different than before, so I got to figure out the timing.”

As the Lakers work through their chemistry challenges and adjust to life without LeBron James, all eyes will be on Hachimura to step up and contribute consistently in his expanded role.
