WGA cancels Los Angeles awards show amid labor strike

The Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) has canceled its awards ceremony originally scheduled for March 8, as its staff union members continue to strike. The employees are demanding higher pay and protections against the use of artificial intelligence.

In a letter sent to members on Sunday, WGA West’s board of directors, including President Michele Mulroney, explained the decision: “The non-supervisory staff of the WGAW are currently on strike and the Guild would not ask our members or guests to cross a picket line to attend the awards show. The WGAW staff have a right to strike and our exceptional nominees and honorees deserve an uncomplicated celebration of their achievements.”

While the Los Angeles ceremony has been canceled, the New York ceremony, also scheduled for the same day, is expected to proceed as planned. According to the letter, an alternative celebration for Los Angeles-based nominees will be held at a later date.

Comedian and actor Atsuko Okatsuka was set to host the L.A. event, and filmmaker James Cameron was slated to receive the WGA West Laurel Award.

WGA union staffers have been striking outside the guild’s Los Angeles headquarters on Fairfax Avenue since February 17. The union alleges that management did not intend to reach an agreement on the pending contract. Furthermore, they claim that guild management has “surveilled workers for union activity, terminated union supporters, and engaged in bad faith surface bargaining.”

On Tuesday, the union stated that management had mentioned canceling the ceremony during a call about contract negotiations. The staff union responded, “Make no mistake: this is an attempt by WGAW management to drive a wedge between WGSU and WGA membership when we should be building unity ahead of MBA [Minimum Basic Agreement] negotiations with the AMPTP [Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers].”

The union further urged guild management to end the strike immediately, posting on Instagram, “We urge Guild management to end this strike now.”

The union, formed last spring and consisting of more than 100 employees working in areas such as legal, communications, and residuals, first authorized a strike in January with 82% of its members supporting the action.

Contract negotiations, which began in September, have primarily focused on the use of artificial intelligence, pay raises, and “basic protections” including grievance procedures. The WGA has stated that it offered “comprehensive proposals with numerous union protections and improvements to compensation and benefits.”

The cancellation of the awards ceremony, occurring just weeks before the Oscars, casts a shadow over the upcoming negotiations between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents studios and streamers.

Notably, in 2023, the WGA experienced a strike lasting 148 days, marking the second-longest strike in the union’s history.

NASA’s Artemis II lunar mission may not launch in March after all

Just one day after NASA said it was eyeing a potential March 6 launch date for the Artemis II lunar mission, the space agency said Saturday that complications with the rocket could delay all launch attempts in March from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Artemis II mission, which is set to carry four astronauts on a 10-day trip around the moon, would be the first time humans return to the vicinity of the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. In a blog post, NASA said it is “taking steps to potentially roll back the Artemis II rocket and Orion spacecraft to the Vehicle Assembly Building,” after technicians observed an “interrupted flow of helium” to the rocket system. NASA says its teams are “actively reviewing data” and taking steps to “address the issue as soon as possible while engineers determine the best path forward.” NASA says a rollback from the pad to the nearby Vehicle Assembly Building would mean that the five potential launch dates in March would be off the table. NASA has six launch opportunities in April. NASA says it’s unclear why helium flow was interrupted. The space agency says it’s reviewing data from the uncrewed Artemis I mission in 2022 in which teams had to troubleshoot helium-related pressurization of the upper stage before launch. On Friday, following the completion of the second “wet dress rehearsal”, NASA managers were optimistic. “This is really getting real,” said Lori Glaze, acting associate administrator of NASA’s exploration systems development mission directorate. “It’s time to get serious and start getting excited.” A test of the rocket, earlier this month, revealed several issues. During the fueling, NASA encountered problems like a liquid hydrogen leak. Swapping out some seals and other work seems to have fixed those issues, according to officials who say that the latest countdown dress rehearsal went smoothly, despite glitches such as a loss of ground communications in the Launch Control Center that forced workers to temporarily use backups. NPR’s Nell Greenfieldboyce contributed reporting.

Weeks before studio negotiations, the Writers Guild of America’s staff union goes on strike

The Writers Guild of America West’s own staff union is officially on strike. According to a release, the staff union called for an unfair labor practice strike on Tuesday afternoon, alleging management has shown no intention to come to an agreement on the pending contract. Among its accusations, the labor group also said that guild management has “surveilled workers for union activity, terminated union supporters, and engaged in bad faith surface bargaining.” Last month, the union first authorized a strike, with 82% of its members in favor. The staff union, made up of over 100 workers across legal, communications, residuals and other departments, was formed last spring and contract negotiations began in September. The bargaining has focused on concerns about the growth and use of artificial intelligence, pay raises and “basic protections” like grievance procedures. In a statement to The Times, WGA said it “respects the staff union’s right to strike, and will continue to bargain in good faith,” but said the union’s “allegations of unfair labor practices are without merit.” “During the course of 19 negotiating sessions since September, the Guild has offered the staff union comprehensive proposals with numerous union protections and improvements to compensation and working conditions,” wrote a WGA spokesperson. “We look forward to a resolution of a first contract with the staff union.” The Writers Guild made headlines in 2023 for the second-longest strike in the union’s history. At the time, film and TV writers were boycotting major studios and fighting for fair compensation. WGA West staffers also played a key role in the strike as they, too, joined the picket lines. A contract was settled after a 148-day work stoppage, but it’s set to expire on May 1. The strike comes as the WGA’s East and West Coast groups get ready to once again sit down with major movie studios and streaming companies. SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, began its negotiations last week, with WGA’s set to begin in mid-March. But for now, WGA’s staff union will be picketing outside of its Fairfax offices.

Planning upholds denial of self-storage next to Aldi

A prominent orthopedic surgeon denied during testimony on Wednesday, Dec. 3, in the Tyler Skaggs wrongful death trial that he was informed of the Los Angeles Angels pitcher’s issues with opioids when he performed Tommy John surgery on him in 2014.

The testimony by Dr. Neal ElAttrache contradicted earlier claims by Skaggs’ mother that he was told Skaggs had battled an addiction to painkillers. Since the medical procedure was effectively a workers’ compensation issue for the Angels, the organization would have had access to medical records tied to the Tommy John surgery. Exactly what the team knew about Skaggs’ use of illicit pills and when they knew it is a key question in the ongoing trial.

“Were you ever advised by Tyler Skaggs or anyone in his family that Tyler had a previous issue with opioids?” asked Stephen Ladsous, an attorney for the Angels.

“I can’t recall ever having that discussion,” said ElAttrache, who, along with serving as the head team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Rams, has performed surgery on numerous celebrities and sports figures. “I can’t recall ever linking, in my mind, opioid problems and Tyler.”

ElAttrache confirmed that he prescribed Percocet and oxycodone to help Skaggs deal with his recovery from surgery. The doctor added that had he known of Skaggs’ issues with opioids, he would have instead referred him to a pain management specialist.

“I want to know what is available to me and if the typical ways to relieve pain are not available to me, there are other ways we can do it,” ElAttrache said. “But we can’t go bare after surgery.”

According to testimony and evidence presented during the ongoing trial, Skaggs routinely used illicit opioid pills obtained for him by Eric Kay, a Los Angeles Angels communications staffer. Skaggs also informed several other players that Kay could get pills for them as well.

Tragically, Skaggs died in a Texas hotel room in 2019 at the start of a team road trip. He had snorted a counterfeit pill that Kay provided him, which turned out to contain fentanyl combined with oxycodone and alcohol. Kay is currently serving prison time for his role in Skaggs’ death.

Family members have acknowledged that Skaggs, in 2013, told them about issues he had with Percocet while pitching for the Arizona Diamondbacks. However, the family, as well as Skaggs’ wife and his agent, have denied knowing at the time that his opioid use continued after he was traded to the Angels in 2014.

“I did not think he was using,” said Ryan Hamill, Skaggs’ agent, referring to the pitcher’s time with the Angels. “I never saw any signs.”

During the defense phase of the trial, attorneys for the Angels have continually elicited testimony about Skaggs’ efforts to hide his addiction. They are expected to argue that by hiding his drug use, Skaggs made it impossible for the team to help him and prevent his death.

Attorneys for the team have also pushed back against claims by other former Angels players that the pressure and wear and tear of professional baseball led them to turn to illicit opioids.

In one text exchange from August 2018 shown in court on Wednesday, Skaggs complained that he was hurting after a pitching start but couldn’t get the team to give him a “dose pack,” a prescribed, tapered course of anti-inflammatory steroids. Hamill, his agent, texted Skaggs that teams usually gave those packs out “like candy,” but the agent refused Skaggs’ request for him to secretly obtain a pack, noting it would be illegal.

Hamill, during his testimony, acknowledged that teams have since dialed back their reliance on dose packs since they can be bad for a player’s liver.

“I’d say they were one of the first teams to pull back on handing them out,” he said of the Angels.

Hamill hesitated when asked if he blamed his former client for his illicit drug use.

“I don’t blame Tyler,” he said after a long pause. “I just wish he would have told me.”

Employees who worked in the Angels’ front office, including in the communication and HR departments, have denied knowing that Kay had his own opioid addiction issues or that he was providing pills to Skaggs and other players. But several members of the clubhouse, as well as Kay’s ex-wife, have testified that Kay’s addiction issues were well-known by the team and that they were warned of his drug connections to Skaggs.

The trial is on break Thursday, but testimony will continue Friday in an Orange County Superior Courtroom in Santa Ana.

Campbell’s fires executive who was recorded saying company’s products are for ‘poor people’

The Campbell’s Co. said Wednesday it has fired an executive who was recorded making racist comments and mocking the company’s products and customers. Martin Bally, a vice president in Campbell’s information security department, was named in a lawsuit filed last week by Robert Garza, a former Campbell’s employee who said he was fired Jan. 30 after he reported Bally’s comments to a supervisor. The lawsuit was filed in Michigan, where both Garza and Bally live. Campbell’s is based in Camden, New Jersey. In the lawsuit, Garza claimed he met with Bally in November 2024 to discuss his salary. During the meeting, which Garza allegedly recorded, Bally described Campbell’s as “highly process(ed) food” and said it was for “poor people.” Garza claimed in the lawsuit that Bally made racist remarks about Indian workers, whom he called “idiots.” Garza said Bally also told him that he often went to work high after consuming marijuana edibles. Campbell’s said Wednesday it first learned of Garza’s lawsuit last week. After listening to portions of the recording, Campbell’s said it believed the voice was Bally’s. Bally was fired Tuesday. “The comments were vulgar, offensive and false, and we apologize for the hurt they have caused,” the company said in a statement. “This behavior does not reflect our values and the culture of our company, and we will not tolerate that kind of language under any circumstances.” Garza’s attorney didn’t respond when The Associated Press asked for a copy of the audio recording. But according to Local 4 news in Detroit, which interviewed Garza and played a portion of the recording on air, Bally said Campbell’s products were unhealthy during his expletive-filled rant. “Bioengineered meat. I don’t want to eat a piece of chicken that came from a 3D printer,” Bally said. Campbell’s defended its chicken Wednesday, saying it comes from long-trusted U. S. suppliers, is raised without antibiotics and meets high quality standards. “The comments heard on the recording about our food are not only inaccurate, they are patently absurd,” Campbell’s said. Larry Kopp, the chairman and founder of The TASC Group, a strategic communications and public relations company, said Campbell’s should have fired Bally and reached a settlement with Garza as soon as it learned of the incident. “If they had settled they would not be in this mess,” Kopp said. “Recordings like these are devastating and should never see the light of day.” Garza is seeking monetary damages from Campbell’s, Bally and from his former manager, J. D. Aupperle. Garza said he told Aupperle about the conversation with Bally shortly before he was fired. Campbell’s said Wednesday that Aupperle remains employed by the company.

Two National Guards Not Dead: FBI Director Reveals ‘Critical Condition’ After Gov. Morrisey Blunder

Chaos and confusion gripped the nation’s capital on the eve of Thanksgiving after a brazen afternoon ambush left two National Guard members fighting for their lives. While initial reports from West Virginia officials declared the soldiers dead, federal authorities were forced to intervene with a sombre correction regarding the surprise attack near the White House. FBI Director Kash Patel moved quickly to clarify the situation late Wednesday, revealing that the victims remain in critical condition following the shooting on 26 November. The incident, which occurred just blocks from the executive mansion, triggered an immediate lockdown and highlighted the perilous atmosphere facing troops deployed in Washington, DC. West Virginia Governor Retracts Premature Fatality Announcement The fog of war appeared to cloud official communications in the hours following the violence. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey had earlier released a statement erroneously reporting that the two troops, both members of the West Virginia National Guard, had died from their injuries. This declaration sent shockwaves through the community before being contradicted by federal law enforcement. Upon realising the error, Morrisey issued a retraction citing ‘conflicting reports.’ He walked back his previous confirmation with a plea for patience as the situation developed. ‘We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information,’ Morrisey stated. ‘Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community.’ FBI Director Confirms Soldiers Are Battling for Survival Kash Patel provided the definitive update on the soldiers’ status, urging the public to focus on the victims’ recovery rather than the administrative confusion. He emphasised the gravity of their injuries while highlighting their role in the capital’s security operations. ‘Please send your prayers to those brave warriors who are in critical condition and their families,’ Patel said. ‘They are here serving our country. They are here protecting everyday Americans and citizens around the world in our nation’s capital.’ Jeff Carroll, executive assistant chief at the Metropolitan Police Department, confirmed that the wounded guardsmen were being treated at a local hospital. Lone Gunman Ambushed Troops Outside Subway Station The attack unfolded with terrifying speed outside a subway station in the heart of Washington, DC. Mayor Muriel Bowser described the event as a ‘targeted shooting,’ dispelling fears of a wider coordinated terror plot. Police officials indicated that the aggressor acted alone when he opened fire on the unsuspecting service members. ‘At this point, we have no other suspects,’ Carroll told reporters at an evening news conference. ‘It appears to be a lone gunman that raised the firearm and ambushed these members of the National Guard and was quickly taken into custody by other National Guard members and law enforcement members.’ Investigators have found no evidence to suggest the shooter received assistance. The focus remains on uncovering the motive behind the sudden violence. Fellow Guardsmen Subdued Suspect in Moments of Heroism Despite the shock of the ambush, other National Guard members in the vicinity reacted with immediate professionalism. According to Chief Carroll, troops nearby heard the gunfire and rushed into danger to neutralise the threat before police units could arrive. ‘They heard the gunfire, they actually were able to intervene and to kind of hold down the suspect after he had been shot on the ground until law enforcement got there within moments,’ Carroll detailed. The suspect, who was shot during the confrontation, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Police are continuing to investigate who fired the round that struck the assailant. High-Security Alert Amidst Holiday Preparations The shooting occurred while President Donald Trump was away at his residence in Palm Beach, Florida, for the holiday. Nevertheless, the proximity of the violence to the seat of executive power necessitated a swift lockdown of the White House. This violence underscores the tension in Washington, where thousands of troops have been stationed for months. They are part of a broader initiative by the President to combat crime in the district, a mission that has now seen its own enforcers become targets.

Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has added yet another prime asset to his real estate portfolio, this time in Mumbai’s thriving commercial district of Andheri East. According to property registration documents, the actor has purchased two office units in the Kanakia Wallstreet building for a total consideration of Rs. 30. 75 crore. Saif Ali Khan makes major real estate move; buys commercial offices worth Rs. 30. 75 Crore in Mumbai The combined area of the newly acquired offices measures 5, 681 sq ft and includes six dedicated parking spaces. The seller of the property is Apiore Pharmaceutical, a US-based pharma company, as reflected in the registration filings. The deal was arranged by Volney, a real estate advisory and investor network firm. The transaction was officially registered on November 18, 2025, with a stamp duty of Rs. 1. 84 crore and a registration fee of Rs. 60, 000. Industry experts note that Andheri East has rapidly emerged as one of Mumbai’s busiest commercial corridors, attracting corporates, global enterprises, and creative firms due to its improved connectivity and infrastructure. Volney’s founder, Rohan Sheth, described the area as a market that combines accessibility with strong rental prospects, adding that it continues to draw long-term investors. Saif’s new commercial investment also places him among several high-profile names who have recently secured space in the vicinity. Elon Musk’s satellite internet company, Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited, recently leased a 1, 294 sq. ft. office in the nearby Chandivali area for a five-year period, with total rent valued at Rs. 2. 33 crore. Additionally, the same building previously housed leased offices where Hrithik Roshan and Rakesh Roshan acquired three commercial units earlier this year for about Rs. 31 crores through HRX Digitech LLP. Beyond his latest acquisition, Saif Ali Khan is already known for his premium residential and commercial holdings across Mumbai. He currently resides in a high-end apartment in Bandra West, a property he purchased nearly a decade ago for Rs. 24 crores. Records also show that he bought a sprawling 6, 500 sq. ft. apartment in April 2012 for Rs. 23. 50 crore from Satguru Builders, further cementing his presence in the city’s luxury real estate landscape.
