Steelers survive late Vikings comeback to claim historic win in Dublin

It has been 27 years since the Pittsburgh Steelers played a pre-season game in Croke Park against the Chicago Bears. Back in 1997, Kerry were the All-Ireland Football champions under Paidi O Sé, and Clare were the All-Ireland Hurling champions, captained by the great Anthony Daly.

All these years later, there was certainly a lot of yellow around GAA HQ on Sunday, but instead of the green and yellow of Kerry, it was the iconic black and gold of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Over 30,000 fans travelled from the United States to see the first-ever regular-season NFL game to take place in Ireland, all part of the NFL’s mission to grow the game internationally.

This year is bigger than ever, with games in Brazil, three games in London, as well as matches in Berlin and Madrid.

The Steelers’ opponents in Dublin were the Minnesota Vikings, who came into the game with the same record as Pittsburgh—two wins and one loss. Despite losing their young quarterback JJ McCarthy to injury two weeks ago, veteran Carson Wentz stepped in last week, leading the team to a win against the Cincinnati Bengals.

### Game Overview

The game started poorly for the Steelers as quarterback Aaron Rodgers was sacked on the very first play. After a quick three-and-out, the Vikings began to march down the field. Things took a complicated turn when the Steelers appeared to score a touchdown off a fumble recovery. However, the referees ruled the player out of bounds when he fumbled, allowing the Vikings to retain possession. They managed only a field goal, leaving the score 3-0 in favor of Minnesota.

The Steelers responded sharply with a great drive led by Rodgers, ending in a 1-yard touchdown run from running back Kenneth Gainwell.

### Terrible Towels Take Over

The Vikings couldn’t mount a response, and once again Rodgers took the field. He found his best receiver, DK Metcalf, who broke free down the middle for a spectacular 30-yard touchdown run, sending the Steelers fans into a frenzy.

Whether at Acrisure Stadium or Croke Park, the sight of the yellow “Terrible Towels” is enough to unnerve opposing teams. That pressure soon told as Wentz was constantly hounded by the Steelers’ defense, forcing him into a tipped pass that was intercepted by safety DeShon Elliott.

### Celebrity Sightings and Unique Fans

During stoppages—a hallmark of American sports—several celebrities appeared on the big screen, including Steelers superfan and Kerry footballer Paudie Clifford. Connacht and Ireland rugby player Bundee Aki participated in the official coin toss, and legendary Hollywood actor Bill Murray was even spotted in the crowd.

Fans also showed their enthusiasm with unique outfits: one Steelers fan dressed in black armor like a Roman centurion, while a Vikings supporter wore a Mandalorian helmet with Baby Yoda perched on his shoulder.

### Steely Defence and Croke Park Atmosphere

As the first half wore on, the game slowed down with just a Vikings field goal to note, making the halftime score 14-6 to the Steelers.

The sun began to break through the clouds as the second half started, illuminating the beautiful Croke Park field. Fans on Hill 16 were able to soak up the rays from the famed terrace, which was converted into a seating-only section for the game—a clear indication of how far the GAA has come to accommodate an event of this magnitude.

While the State contributed €10 million to help host the game, the expected economic benefit is estimated to reach close to €65 million.

### A Game in the Making for Years

This game did not happen overnight—it has been years in the making. The Steelers were founded by Art Rooney back in 1933, who traced his roots back to Newry in Co Down. With the team still under the stewardship of Art Rooney Jr. and Art Rooney II, it is clear why this game was so important to the franchise.

As the second half progressed, the Rooney brothers must have been pleased with their team’s performance. The Steelers’ defense began to dominate. Midway through the third quarter, star pass rusher T.J. Watt intercepted a pass, setting up the offense in prime position. Kenneth Gainwell capitalized with another touchdown, widening the lead to 21-6.

During one of the many breaks in play, the stadium announcer revealed attendance was close to 75,000—not quite an All-Ireland final day, but still an impressive crowd.

The Steelers continued to control the clock and added a field goal, extending their lead to 24-6 with just over ten minutes remaining.

### Vikings Rally Late

The Vikings fought back, scoring a late touchdown by running back Zavier Scott, followed by a successful two-point conversion with seven minutes to go.

With three minutes remaining, the game burst to life again when Wentz connected with Jordan Addison for an electrifying 81-yard gain. Now just yards from the goal line, the Vikings went for it on fourth down, converting with a short pass to Jalen Nailor, narrowing the score to 24-21.

Despite their efforts, the Vikings could not tie the score, and the Steelers ran out the clock for the victory.

### Final Thoughts

What seemed like a potential blowout transformed into a highly competitive game. Overall, Dublin and Croke Park were excellent hosts. The city centre buzzed with excitement, and Merrion Square was transformed into a Steelers’ tailgate for the weekend. Families enjoyed activities such as trying out field goal kicking and target practice.

There are areas to improve, though. Some food stalls ran out of items by halftime, and the “loaded” nachos served seemed to have only a small squeeze of cheese. These minor kinks can certainly be ironed out for future events.

For its first NFL game, Croke Park proved to be the perfect cauldron for American football—a thrilling showcase of sport and culture coming together on Irish soil.

Buccaneers news: Chase McLaughlin’s 65-yarder a silver lining from awful half vs. Eagles

As the third quarter of their Week 4 clash gets underway, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have largely struggled against the visiting Philadelphia Eagles. At the moment, the Eagles hold a 24-6 lead, as the Buccaneers’ offense has been kept in check for the most part. However, a pair of field goals from veteran kicker Chase McLaughlin have put the Bucs on the board.

Most notable was McLaughlin’s 65-yard field goal as the first half ended. The sports site enthusiastically reported, *“Chase McLaughlin DRILLS the 65-yard FG”* — the second-longest field goal in NFL history!

McLaughlin’s 65-yarder surpassed former Buccaneers kicker Matt Bryant’s 62-yard make against the Eagles back in 2006, making it the longest field goal in franchise history. With Tampa Bay’s offense sputtering for most of the first half, the kick provided a much-needed jolt of life to the unit.

However, that momentum might have already worn off. Following an excellent punt return by Kam Johnson, the Bucs turned the ball over on downs, halting any potential drive.

The question remains: can McLaughlin’s strong leg keep the Buccaneers in this high-stakes clash, or will it not be enough against a potent Eagles offense? Fans will be watching closely as the second half unfolds.

No. 1 Ohio State opens Big Ten play with road win at Washington

The No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes traveled out west on Saturday and secured their first road win of the 2025 season, defeating the Washington Huskies 24-6 at Husky Stadium in Seattle.

In a nationally televised game on Channel 7, quarterback Julian Sayin completed 22 of 28 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns. The Buckeyes also rushed for 149 yards. Ohio State’s defense proved tough on third down, holding the Huskies to just one conversion on 11 third-down attempts.

With the victory, Ohio State improves to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten.

After a scoreless first quarter, Washington took an early 3-0 lead with a 28-yard field goal by Grady Gross to begin the second quarter. The Huskies’ lead was short-lived, as Ohio State responded before halftime. Sayin connected with Jeremiah Smith on an 18-yard touchdown pass, capping a 10-play, 73-yard scoring drive and giving the Buckeyes a 7-3 halftime lead.

The Buckeyes took the second-half kickoff and engineered a 75-yard drive over 14 plays. CJ Donaldson, Jr. finished the drive with a one-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 14-3. The teams then exchanged field goals, with OSU holding a 17-6 advantage.

After stopping the Huskies on a fourth-down attempt, Ohio State took over at their own 44-yard line with 8:44 remaining. Sayin threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Donaldson, increasing the lead to 24-6. This score capped an eight-play, 44-yard drive.

Bo Jackson led the Buckeyes on the ground with 80 yards rushing, while Jeremiah Smith caught eight passes for 81 yards and a touchdown.

Ohio State’s next game is scheduled for October 4, when they will host Minnesota at 7:30 p.m. in Columbus.

Brighton net twice at the death to claim comeback win away to 10-man Chelsea

Brighton struck twice in second-half stoppage-time as 10-man Chelsea threw away the lead to slump to a 3-1 Premier League defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Maxim De Cuypers’ header put Brighton into the lead at the start of 11 added minutes at the end of the match to stun the home side, who had labored ever since the dismissal in the 53rd minute of Trevoh Chalobah. Substitute De Cuypers was left unmarked to nod the ball home after Mats Weiffer had turned Yasin Ayaris’ deep cross back into the box, before fellow substitute Danny Welbeck added a third, his second, to finish Chelsea off.

For the second time in as many league matches, Brighton manager Enzo Maresca had been left looking for answers following a red card. This time he at least had the comfort of an advantage given to his side by Enzo Fernandez’s header midway through the first half. But after Chalobah was sent off for denying Diego Gomez a clear goal-scoring opportunity—as had happened at Old Trafford last weekend—Chelsea were made to improvise.

That they failed to do so raises questions again about this young side’s ability to show guile and organizational nous when under pressure. Manchester United learned last week how rattled Chelsea become when a situation changes rapidly, and here Brighton were the beneficiaries. Welbeck headed them level 13 minutes from time as the game swung the visitors’ way.

Chelsea started excellently and might have finished Brighton off by half-time. Bart Verbruggen kept out free-kicks in the first half from Fernandez and Reece James, while Marc Cucurella fizzed an early effort just a yard wide against his former club. There was a hum of approval from home fans when Estevao Willian nutmegged Ferdi Kadioglu on halfway, then drove determinedly into the box before Jan Paul van Hecke could shovel the ball behind for a corner.

The game was being played at an excitable pace, with all one-touch passing and zig-zagging runs—the antithesis of Chelsea’s lacklustre surrender to United a week ago.

In the absence of Cole Palmer, Fernandez took the number 10 role as he did against Bayern Munich. His speed of thought on the ball and sureness of touch in the centre greased the gears of Chelsea’s early dominance.

The goal after 24 minutes was much deserved. Moises Caicedo slipped the ball into the right channel for James to zip onto, and as his cross skipped up into an arch off the covering Kaoru Mitoma, there at the far post was Fernandez, hanging in the air as it dropped to nod it over the line.

Then came the red card on which the game turned. A dreadful pass from Andrey Santos exposed Chalobah as the last man to the goalwards advance of Gomez. The defender made a hopeless attempt to win the ball from behind, and following a protracted VAR analysis, he was dismissed.

Welbeck came on and shot agonizingly wide after losing Cucurella, as Chelsea failed to clear their lines. But the striker would not be denied. Moments later, he was left free inside the box to rise and bullet Yankuba Minteh’s cross past Robert Sanchez for the equaliser.

De Cuypers’ goal for 2-1 was the killer for Chelsea. Few of their fans remained in the ground by the time Welbeck crashed in his second and Brighton’s third.

### What Our Post Expert Thinks About BYU vs. Colorado

Nobody expected things to run that smoothly for Sanders and the Buffaloes without Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, but a loss to BYU could doom Colorado to a very disappointing season.

After facing the Cougars, Colorado travels to TCU, hosts Iowa State, and then takes on Utah. Things could get ugly pretty fast for Coach Prime if the Buffaloes can’t get a win this weekend.

Oregon vs. Penn State prediction: Odds, picks, best bet for massive Big Ten battle

No. 3 Penn State has not put a foot wrong in 2025, but the Nittany Lions won’t stop hearing from the critics until they take that next step. Coming up just short—whether it be in a do-or-die game in the regular season or in the College Football Playoff semifinals last year—has become the M.O. in Happy Valley during the James Franklin era.

A win over No. 6 Oregon at Beaver Stadium on Saturday would go a long way in quieting the noise around Franklin and the Nittany Lions. Penn State is a 3.5-point favorite under the Central PA lights on Saturday.

### Oregon vs. Penn State Odds, Prediction

Neither one of these teams has really faced anybody of note through the first month of the season. Penn State has blown out Nevada, FIU, and Villanova, while Oregon has done the same to Montana State, Oregon State, Northwestern, and Oklahoma State. It’s hard to glean much from those games that we didn’t already know about these two heavyweights—they’re very good!

One thing that has stood out on the Oregon side has been how well the Ducks have protected quarterback Dante Moore. Keeping Moore upright against Northwestern or Montana State is one thing, but doing so against Penn State will be a whole new ballgame. Nonetheless, the Ducks have given us no reason to doubt that they can handle themselves in the trenches.

### Betting Insights

Penn State’s offense has also given us no reason to worry, though you can poke holes in its ability to strike quickly. Drew Allar is going to be a high pick in April because of his ability to manage a game efficiently, but the passing game struggles to keep secondaries honest by hitting them for big plays.

These two teams are viewed as peers by the betting market, but Penn State is the favorite on Saturday for a couple of reasons. The Nittany Lions are rested after a bye, while Oregon has to travel across the country to play in a hostile environment. Perhaps that’s enough to make Penn State a 3.5-point favorite, but I’d push back on that.

While home-field advantage plays a factor, Franklin’s 4-20 record against top-10 opponents needs to be accounted for in this matchup. I’ll take the points in this coin flip.

### The Play: Oregon +3.5 (-110, FanDuel)

Seventeen-year-old Rio Ngumoha signs first professional contract at Liverpool

Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha has signed his first professional contract, a month after turning 17 and a year after arriving from Chelsea. The winger, whose match-winning goal at Newcastle in August made him the club’s youngest goal-scorer at 16 years and 361 days, has enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks and has been rewarded with a three-year deal.

Ngumoha, who has made five senior appearances, made his debut in the FA Cup third-round tie at home to Accrington in January. After impressing in pre-season, he was made a permanent member of head coach Arne Slot’s first-team squad.

His Premier League debut was memorable, as he scored the winner at St James’ Park in the 10th minute of added time. Additionally, his appearance off the bench in last week’s Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid made him the club’s youngest player in European competition.

Chelsea were unhappy with Liverpool’s capture of a player who had been with them since the age of eight. For a while, it is understood that the clubs’ scouts were banned from watching matches at the Blues’ academy. It is believed the Newham-born youngster chose to leave because he believed the pathway on offer was better at Liverpool — a decision that appears to have already been vindicated.

Off the pitch, the club announced it had issued a record 1,114 lifetime bans for ticket touting, with almost half of those imposed following the discovery of mass manipulation of software last season. Investigators at the club also shut down 162 social media groups, with a combined membership of more than one million users, involved in selling fake tickets or reselling real tickets. In total, 45,000 fake ticketing accounts were closed.
