Detective says cruelty of woman’s murder will “stay with me forever”

The guys at the sheriff’s office call her a “cool dude with long hair” because, they say, she’s meaner than any of them—both on the gun range and in the field. Her name is Lt. Dakota Black. She’s a trained tracker and detective with the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Lt. Dakota Black explains, “I go out to scenes when there’s manhunts or trying to locate individuals.” Her specialty is finding the missing—whether alive or dead.

“I have found them underneath piles of leaves, in trees, abandoned homes, sheds… I’ve found them pretty much in any area you can think of,” she says.

Often by her side is her partner, Deputy Haven, a trained therapy dog. For kids and other family members caught in the crossfire of tragedy, Haven provides comfort and consolation—a consoling presence Lt. Black herself would rely on in the coming months as she embarked on one of the most heart-wrenching cases of her career.

Lt. Dakota Black reflects, “This case will stay with me forever. And it will be one that I always remember throughout my whole life because of how cruel it was.”

### The Search for Makayla Meave

Andria Meave recalls, “The last thing we said to each other was ‘I love you.'”

Friday, September 15, 2023, began like most days for Andria—with a 7 a.m. phone call from her best friend and younger sister, Makayla.

Andria says, “I wish I would’ve known; I would have said so much more. I’m grateful for that at least I said, ‘I love you.'”

The next morning, Saturday the 16th, the phone rang again around 7 a.m.—only this time, it wasn’t Makayla on the line. It was Makayla’s husband, Frank Byers.

Andria recalls, “He’s hysterical, crying, screaming, can barely understand what he’s saying. And he says, ‘Makayla didn’t come home last night.'”

Frank Byers told Andria that Makayla went on a date the Friday night before with a bald man in a white truck. They left, and she never came home that night.

At the time, Makayla and Frank were headed for divorce, says Andria. They still lived on the same 10-acre property in Macomb, Oklahoma—but in separate homes.

So initially, Andria wasn’t worried.

“My first thought was, ‘She’s single. I hope she had fun,'” she says.

But as the hours went by, her concern grew. Many of her calls to Makayla went straight to voicemail.

By noon, Andria was worried. By 1 p.m., she was really worried.

Their mother, Barbara Harper, was also anxious. Makayla was supposed to help out at the family restaurant that afternoon but never showed up or called—unheard of for Makayla.

Barbara says, “The more I prayed about it, the more I realized that something serious had happened.”

Frank Byers reported Makayla missing to the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office that afternoon.

### Community Grasping for Answers

Frank Byers appeared on local news, visibly upset.

“Even today, I call her,” he said. “I know she’s not here, but I still have her number and her phone’s still somewhere. It would’ve been nice to hear her voice.”

Many in the community tuned in to watch his interview—including Lt. Dakota Black.

When asked if she felt angry, Lt. Black admitted, “It did make me angry. It was sickening to see that a beautiful woman was gone from the world and, while he’s on TV professing his innocence, he’s still in communication with other women, trying to have intimate relationships with them.”

### Uncovering Frank Byers’ Past

Detective Black tracked down scores of these other women.

One was Crystal Cantrell, Byers’ girlfriend before he met Makayla.

Crystal shared, “He is very good at making you believe him… and then he’s kind of like a snake. Once he gets you in there, he bites you.”

Black learned that Byers wooed Cantrell with the same false story he used on Makayla—that his daughters were being mistreated by his current girlfriend.

Like Makayla, Cantrell had a soft heart.

“I love kids,” she explained. “I have kids of my own, so I just felt really bad for them.”

Shortly after moving in together, Cantrell says Byers began to reveal his true nature. He isolated her from friends and family and controlled her every move.

They fought. One night, Cantrell woke up to see him looming over her, clutching a pair of handcuffs.

“I closed them so he couldn’t use them on me,” she said. “After that, he just got on my back and was choking me. He wrapped his arms around me and had his hand on my throat and just didn’t let go.”

Cantrell managed to escape but was too afraid to report the incident to police. She left Byers for good but says it could have been her in that ditch.

“He would’ve killed me,” she said.

### Signs of Domestic Abuse

If Byers ever harmed Makayla, she never told her mom and sister.

Sometimes they saw bruises, but Makayla always said they were from roughhousing with the kids.

Andria confesses, “If I think about it too much, I go down a dark hole and don’t come out because I did see the bruises and I just chose to believe and not question. Maybe if I would’ve questioned, it would have come out differently.”

### Building a Profile

Piece by piece, Lt. Black and her team built a profile of a murderer.

“This photo was taken at Walmart,” Lt. Black said, showing a security camera image. Using the date on a Walmart receipt found on Frank’s property, detectives were able to track the footage.

In the photo, the cart contained bleach, ammonia, and a mop.

When asked what those items meant to her as an investigator, Lt. Black said, “Crime scene cleanup.”

They also matched the carpet found in the ditch where Makayla’s body was discovered to a carpet a neighbor had given Byers and Makayla for their dogs.

“Frank took that carpet given by the neighbor and used it to roll Makayla’s body in,” Lt. Black explained.

Detectives believe Byers killed Makayla around 4 p.m. and left her body in the home. Later, he picked up his daughters after school and drove them around, returning home about 8 p.m. That’s when he likely started moving her body.

The children reported in interviews about what happened when they returned home.

### Confronting the Killer

Barbara Harper recalls the moment the police confronted Byers.

“It was a hallelujah moment, a ‘about time’ moment,” she said. “We couldn’t get her back, but we knew he wasn’t walking free anymore.”

Detective Marcus May says by then, they had gathered weeks of hard evidence and were done with Byers’ lies.

“Now is the opportunity to let us know what happened,” the detective told Byers during interrogation.

Byers replied, “I… I didn’t do it.”

When pressed about why Makayla’s blood was on his boots, Byers stammered, “I… I can’t answer. I don’t know. Honestly.”

Frank Byers was charged with first-degree murder.

The district attorney sought the death penalty, but the defense requested a plea deal to save his life.

Fifteen months after Byers’ arrest, he agreed to plead guilty and serve life without parole.

### Family’s Heartbreak and Doubts

Makayla’s mother, Barbara Harper, was bitterly disappointed with the plea deal.

“I feel that the plea deal was a cop-out,” she said. “The moment she took her last breath, he chose that and he got to choose what he got for punishment too, and that’s not OK. It’s not OK.”

Barbara also believes Byers did not act alone.

When asked if she was convinced Frank had help, she answered, “I’ll go to my grave believing that.”

Andria Meave agrees, “I think he had to have had an accomplice. I don’t think he could’ve moved her body on his own at all.”

Peter Van Sant asked if Byers was physically capable.

“No, I don’t believe so,” Andria affirmed.

Lt. Black commented, “I think we all agree it would absolutely be difficult to move her, but people are scared—they can do amazing things.”

Detective May added, “What they’re saying is not unreasonable. If the evidence is presented to us one day suggesting that, we will take it and run with it to its fullest extent.”

### Remembering Makayla

Barbara Harper often visits the place where Makayla’s body was found.

“I come and sit and look at that place down there… I went and hung all kinds of crosses and different things.”

She expressed her pain: “He didn’t just take from us, he took from his own children—someone who loved them and put them first.”

Lt. Black reflected, “It didn’t have to end this way. He could have let her leave. But he didn’t. There’s cold justice for Makayla.”

For Detective Dakota Black, tracker, her painful work continues.

### A Foundation to Fight Domestic Violence

Barbara Harper is starting “Makayla’s Purple Butterfly” foundation to fight against domestic violence.

Andria says, “That was her goal, her mission in life—to help anyone in need.”

Visiting Makayla’s grave with her mother, Andria shares, “When I think of Makayla, I think of sunflowers. I think of joy.”

Barbara replies, “She would love that with all those sunflowers. I sure miss her smile, her laugh—oh, that laugh was something else.”

Andria adds, “She was my best friend. I strived for her to be proud of me because I looked up to her—even though she was the little sister.”

She admits, “I still lay in bed and talk to her like she’s still right there. I feel like she’s watching over us every day.”

Yahoo Top 10: Mike Elko, Texas A&M have plenty to be excited about after massive comeback win

Late Friday night, perhaps even into the wee hours of Saturday morning, Mike Elko and Texas A&M finalized a new contract for the coach. And then, just a few hours later, his third-ranked Aggies fell into a 27-point hole at home against lowly South Carolina. Bad timing?

Well, Elko and Co. made sure that the announcement of his big new deal wasn’t completely spoiled. They mounted the biggest comeback in school history, storming back for a 31-30 win over South Carolina by scoring touchdowns on four consecutive drives in a span of 15 minutes of game time—a stretch in which QB Marcel Reed threw for more than 300 yards.

The remarkable effort pushed the Aggies to 10-0 and Elko to 18-5 in his second season at the school. Speaking of Elko, he’ll be making more than $11 million annually as part of the new six-year contract. More importantly, the contract secures his place in Aggieland during one of the craziest coaching cycles in history.

Plenty of schools took an interest in Elko, most notably Penn State, where the coach has a deep connection. He apparently declined the interest from the Nittany Lions and got himself a $3-4 million raise in the process.

Texas A&M’s victory made the SEC championship game race even murkier, especially after Oklahoma stunned Alabama in Tuscaloosa (goodbye, Tide, from our Top 10; and hello, Sooners!). The Aggies now control their own destiny: beat Texas in two weeks and you’re in.

As for everyone else, there could be a bunch of teams locked at one loss, including Alabama, Ole Miss, and Georgia. Tiebreaker time! Either way, we won’t know who will play in Atlanta until the final Saturday results are in.

What’s going on in the other conference races? Indiana and Ohio State are on a crash course for the Big Ten title. The same goes for Texas Tech in the Big 12. In the ACC, there’s a logjam of four one-loss teams.

Meanwhile, the non-power league playoff race got interesting on Saturday when Navy beat South Florida, opening the door for Tulane, North Texas, and JMU to squeak into the postseason tournament.

Speaking of the playoff, Michigan survived in Wrigley Field against Northwestern to keep its hopes alive, Notre Dame pummeled Pitt to stay in position for an at-large berth, and USC rallied against Iowa to move to 8-2.

Let’s get to the Top 10!

### 1. Indiana Hoosiers
**This week:** beat Wisconsin 31-7
**Next week:** at Purdue

The Hoosiers turned a 10-7 halftime lead into a second-half blowout as QB Fernando Mendoza carved through the Badgers secondary for 299 yards on 22-of-24 passing. For the first time ever, Indiana is 11-0, and Curt Cignetti is now 22-2 at the school—a remarkable and historic run.

A bye week comes next before the annual rivalry clash with the in-state Boilermakers and then a titanic showdown with Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game.
**Best win:** 30-20 at Oregon

### 2. Ohio State Buckeyes
**This week:** beat UCLA 48-10
**Next week:** vs. Rutgers

The backups got in pretty early in this one. Are the Buckeyes ever going to be challenged in a tight fourth-quarter game? Freshman RB Bo Jackson broke 100 yards again, and OSU jumped out to a 34-0 lead.
**Best wins:** 14-7 vs. Texas

### 3. Texas A&M Aggies
**This week:** beat South Carolina 31-30
**Next week:** vs. Samford

You read plenty about the big comeback in our rankings intro above. But you can never write too much about the fact that a team climbed out of a 27-point hole. The A&M offense did plenty, but the Aggies’ defense did wonders. South Carolina had five second-half drives; three ended in punts, and two on failed fourth downs.
**Best win:** 41-40 at Notre Dame

### 4. Georgia Bulldogs
**This week:** beat Texas 35-10
**Next week:** vs. Charlotte

QB Gunner Stockton threw four touchdowns, and the Bulldogs suffocated Texas to the tune of less than 30 yards rushing—an all-around stellar performance from Kirby Smart’s defense. Texas didn’t get into the end zone until late in the third quarter.
**Best win:** 43-35 vs. Ole Miss

### 5. Ole Miss Rebels
**This week:** beat Florida 34-24
**Next week:** Off

Lane Kiffin and the Rebels had to sweat this one out against the 3-6 Gators. Good thing they had RB Kewan Lacy, who posted more than 200 yards on 30 carries as Ole Miss locked up a playoff spot ahead of the Egg Bowl.
**Best win:** 34-26 at Oklahoma

### 6. Texas Tech Red Raiders
**This week:** beat UCF 48-9
**Next week:** Off

At one point, the Red Raiders led 38-2. Tech’s offseason investment is paying off (have you heard that one before?). But the Red Raiders go beyond just cash and talent. They are sound, well-coached, and have a direct path to Dallas for the Big 12 title game—a playoff ticket-punching event for coach Joey McGuire and company.
**Best win:** 34-10 at Utah

### 7. Oregon Ducks
**This week:** beat Minnesota 42-13
**Next week:** vs. USC

The banged-up Ducks played without several of their top receivers, but it didn’t matter. QB Dante Moore threw just three incomplete passes against a Gophers defense that entered as one of the nation’s best. Oregon is two wins away from securing a playoff spot. Standing in the way is a home game against the Trojans and a road trip to Seattle.
**Best win:** 34-24 vs. USC

### 8. Oklahoma Sooners
**This week:** beat Alabama 23-21
**Next week:** vs. Missouri

The Sooners had four sacks and turned three turnovers into 17 points to take down Alabama, handing coach Kalen DeBoer his first home loss in Tuscaloosa and his first defeat while wearing the vaunted “black hoodie of death.” OU, despite two losses, finds itself in prime position to get into the playoff as an at-large selection. Missouri and LSU await at home in Norman.
**Best win:** 24-13 vs. Michigan

### 9. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
**This week:** beat Pitt 37-15
**Next week:** vs. Syracuse

The Irish failed to live up to Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi’s expectations. He half-jokingly said the Irish could hang 100 on his team and it wouldn’t matter! Well, they didn’t get there, but they did more than enough to batter the Panthers. RB Jeremiyah Love ran for 147, including a 56-yard touchdown, and the Irish defense held Pitt to 219 total yards.
**Best win:** 34-24 vs. USC

### 10. USC Trojans
**This week:** beat Iowa 26-21
**Next week:** at Oregon

A chilly and rainy day in Los Angeles seemed to favor the Hawkeyes and, for a while, it certainly did. The Trojans needed a second-half rally and 154 yards from WR Makai Lemon in the rain to overcome a two-touchdown first-half deficit and salvage any playoff hopes. Next up: the mighty Ducks in Eugene.
**Best win:** 31-13 vs. Michigan

NFL Announces Punishment for Player Who Hit Giants’ Jaxson Dart

The New York Giants and Chicago Bears faced off in a competitive game on Sunday, November 9, which unfortunately ended in a 24-20 defeat for the Giants. This loss marked their fourth consecutive defeat, and the situation worsened when rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart was injured during the game. As a result, Dart will be sidelined for the Giants’ upcoming home game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, November 16.

### NFL’s Decision on Bears Player After Incident with Jaxson Dart

During the second quarter of the game, Chicago Bears defensive tackle Andrew Billings committed a facemask penalty on Jaxson Dart. This was a significant moment that resulted in a harsh 15-yard penalty and an additional first down awarded to the Giants.

Following the game, the NFL reviewed the incident to determine if Billings would face a fine. The league regularly penalizes players for roughing the passer, with fines reaching up to $17,389 for a first offense and $23,186 for subsequent violations. However, the NFL’s Week 10 report, released on November 15, did not include Billings’ name, meaning he will not be fined for the facemask penalty.

If fines had been imposed, the funds would have been directed to the Professional Athletes Foundation, which supports former players in need, and the NFL Foundation, which focuses on athlete health and wellness at all levels, including youth football.

The NFL stated that league staff carefully examine plays flagged for potential infractions to determine if further action is necessary.

### Jaxson Dart’s Performance and Injury Update

Despite suffering a concussion that forced him out early, Jaxson Dart had a solid performance, completing 19 of 29 passes for 242 yards. He also rushed for 66 yards and scored two touchdowns on the ground.

Due to the concussion, Dart will miss Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. Veteran quarterback Jameis Winston is set to make his first start for the Giants in Dart’s absence.

### New York Giants vs. Green Bay Packers Preview

Looking ahead to the Giants’ matchup against the Packers, opinions are mixed. Tyler Dragon of USA Today, writing on Thursday, November 13, highlighted Green Bay’s recent offensive struggles:

> “Green Bay’s offense has been frozen the past two games, scoring 13 points or less. Look for Jordan Love and company to get back on track this week against a reeling Giants squad.”

On the other hand, Lorenzo Reyes offers a more optimistic take for the Giants:

> “Something is up with the Packers. They have consistently underwhelmed this season, despite having a decent record at 5-3-1. The Giants do have serious holes, but I think this could be a case where firing the head coach provides a short-term boost.”

With Jameis Winston ready to make his debut as the Giants’ starting quarterback, this game will be a significant moment for both him and the team. His experience could prove invaluable as the Giants aim to turn their season around.

Stay tuned for the Giants vs. Packers game on Sunday, November 16, as New York looks to break their losing streak and secure a much-needed victory at home.

Highlights! Erin Blanchfield gets her revenge, chokes out Tracy Cortez to setup potential title shot | UFC 322

Erin Blanchfield put her name on the short list of women’s flyweight title contenders earlier tonight (Sat., Nov. 15, 2025) at UFC 322, live on ESPN+ pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Madison Square Garden in New York City. She became the first fighter to stop Tracy Cortez under the UFC banner with a second-round submission via rear-naked choke.

Blanchfield, who was last seen defeating former UFC champion Rose Namajunas nearly one year ago, had previously lost to Cortez on the regional MMA circuit back in 2019. She was only 19 years old at the time and has clearly improved as a complete fighter since then, but that loss undoubtedly lingered in the back of her mind.

Cortez looked strong in the early going, maintaining her distance and landing some solid strikes. Blanchfield scored some nice shots as well but struggled to implement her grappling effectively in the first round.

Everything changed in Round 2 when Blanchfield secured a takedown in the middle of the cage, earning valuable top control. The fight eventually returned to the feet, but Blanchfield was quick to grab another takedown. This time, as Cortez attempted to stand, Blanchfield snuck in a rear-naked choke.

Cortez appeared close to fighting off the choke, but once Blanchfield transitioned to her back, she locked in the submission and secured the victory—an impressive revenge win over Cortez.

UFC 322 video: Kyle Daukuas drops Gerald Meerschaert, chokes him out for blistering 50 second finish

Kyle Daukaus is making the most of his second stint in the UFC. After making short work of Michel Pereira in his return fight, Daukaus effectively did the same thing to Gerald Meerschaert at UFC 322 on Saturday.

Daukaus scored a knockdown on the feet after connecting with a blistering left hand and then quickly snatched a D’arce choke, which forced Meerschaert to tap out just 50 seconds into the opening round.

Following his release from the UFC after back-to-back losses, Daukaus has now scored six wins in a row, including two victories in the octagon with less than two minutes total time spent in the cage.

“I’m living the dream right now,” Daukaus said after the win. “The way my life is, it’s been amazing. We knew that he was going to be grappling heavy. I’m getting very comfortable in my striking and it’s showing. I knew once I tagged him, we’d follow up and get the finish.”

As soon as he left the UFC, Daukaus went on a mission to earn his way back, and he’s definitely done that with the performances that got him signed back to the roster, along with a pair of jaw-dropping wins since returning.

Daukaus put together a perfectly timed combination that ended with a punch that rattled Meerschaert, and he followed that with a few more strikes to put his opponent down. Rather than hammer away with strikes, Daukaus saw the opening for the D’arce choke and secured the submission instead.

With the win, Daukaus moves to 17-4 with one no contest, and he’s looking like a real problem for the middleweight division in his return.

DC Crime NOT DC Crime? James Gunn Debunks DCU Series Title & More

**James Gunn Debunks “DC Crime” Series Rumors, Teases Upcoming Secret DCU TV Project**

James Gunn recently took to social media to address and clarify recent reports surrounding a new DC Universe (DCU) series titled *DC Crime*, said to premiere in 2026. Earlier this week, news broke that DC Studios and HBO Max were developing *DC Crime*, described as a fictional true crime docuseries set within the DCU and hosted by Jimmy Olsen (portrayed by Skyler Gisondo). The first season was reportedly to focus on Gorilla Grodd, a longtime villain from *The Flash* comics, created by writer John Broome and artist Carmine Infantino, first appearing in *The Flash* #106 (May 1959).

According to initial reports, Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault were attached as writers, executive producers, and showrunners, with DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran serving as executive producers. Additionally, DC Studios’ Galen Vaisman was said to oversee production through Warner Bros. Television.

### James Gunn Sets the Record Straight

However, Gunn took to Threads to debunk these rumors, stating, “Just FYI there has never been a project titled ‘DC Crime’ in development, not even as a working title. I don’t know where that came from but it’s weird.” Addressing the report by Deadline Hollywood, Gunn clarified that while the title *DC Crime* was incorrect, the rest of the details might not be false. He elaborated, “And no that doesn’t mean all of the rest of the story is false.”

Gunn also corrected the reported premiere date, denying the 2026 debut. “There are less than two months left and we haven’t started shooting, so that’s a definite no! (It’s coming 2027.),” he confirmed. He added that the story had surfaced just days earlier, joking about people approaching him in real life excited for *DC Crime*, leaving him “confused to say the least.”

### The Mystery DCU TV Project

In June, during an interview with *Entertainment Weekly* promoting the new *Superman* film starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, Gunn hinted at an unannounced DCU television project. Calling it “my favorite thing in all of this,” he expressed hope that it would come to fruition soon. Gunn revealed that this project was pitched early on to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav but was not publicly announced to avoid the risk of it being copied by other studios.

Further teasing this mystery series, Gunn told *Rolling Stone* in July that they were close to greenlighting a TV show, describing it as “really close” to moving forward.
