Navi Mumbai Airport Inauguration Leaves Villagers Disappointed Over No D B Patil Naming Announcement

Villagers from Navi Mumbai and adjoining coastal districts have expressed deep disappointment following the inauguration of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). During the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made only passing references to the late farmer leader D. B. Patil, without officially announcing that the airport would be named after him.

Just before the ceremony, Dashrat Patil, President of the NMIA Kruti Samiti (All-Party Action Committee), had expressed optimism. “I am sure today is the day the airport will get its much-deserved name. Our hard work will not go waste,” he said.

### Hopes Dashed Despite PM and CM Mentions

However, during the inauguration, PM Modi merely stated, “Today I would also like to remember the great leader D. B. Patil, who toiled for farmers and remains an inspiration to all of us.” Similarly, Chief Minister Fadnavis acknowledged Patil’s contributions but stopped short of making any formal naming declaration.

“When Fadnavis called out D. B. Patil’s name, we were hopeful it was about the airport naming,” shared Dashrat Patil. “It was a huge disappointment. He had earlier assured us that the Prime Minister had agreed in principle, but nothing was mentioned today.”

The Kruti Samiti has announced plans to meet CM Fadnavis within the next ten days to seek documentary clarity on the airport naming process.

### Locals Threaten Political Action

According to Nilesh Patil, a member of the Action Committee representing project-affected persons (PAPs), the silence from the Prime Minister has triggered anger among locals. “We were all waiting to hear that the airport would be named after our leader. It’s really disappointing, and there will be repercussions,” he said.

Leaders of the committee and representatives of affected villages have hinted at intensifying their agitation and potentially taking decisive political steps ahead of the upcoming civic elections.

### Long-Standing Demand Across Coastal Maharashtra

The demand to name NMIA after D. B. Patil has been a decades-long movement, uniting villages from Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts. These communities are collectively represented by the D. B. Patil Navi Mumbai Airport Naming All-Party Action Committee.

A massive morcha (protest march) planned for October 6 was postponed after Chief Minister Fadnavis assured further talks.

“We would not let any flight take off if the naming is not done,” warned Dhanraj Mungaji from the committee. “It was a golden day for aviation, and today the announcement should have been made. We are extremely disappointed, but our fight will continue.”

FPJ Impact: Maha Metro Begins Repair Of Pothole-Ridden Old Mumbai-Pune Highway Service Road In Pimpri-Chinchwad

**Pimpri-Chinchwad: Maha Metro Begins Repair Work on Pothole-Ridden Service Road of Old Mumbai-Pune Highway**

After widespread public outrage and multiple reports in the media, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) has finally initiated repair work on the heavily damaged service road along the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway. The road, which stretches from Bhakti-Shakti Chowk in Nigdi to the Chinchwad Railway Station Chowk, had developed numerous potholes due to ongoing metro construction activities.

The Free Press Journal (FPJ) had extensively covered this issue, highlighting residents’ complaints and the slow response from authorities. The damaged road has caused significant inconvenience to daily commuters, especially during peak hours when traffic congestion often resulted in vehicles taking over half an hour to cover just five kilometers.

### Background

The repair work is linked to the Pimpri to Nigdi extended metro route currently underway on the Purple Line of Pune Metro. This line connects the Pimpri-Chinchwad area to Swargate. For the project, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) had handed over the service road and BRT route of the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway—from Nigdi’s Bhakti-Shakti Chowk to Empire Estate in Chinchwad, covering approximately 4.5 kilometers—to Maha Metro. With this transfer, Maha Metro became responsible for the maintenance and repair of the road.

Metro construction activities on this stretch include road digging, erection of pillars, and viaduct work. To ensure safety and facilitate construction, Maha Metro installed barricades along the route, narrowing the service road significantly. Additionally, footpaths were dug up and temporarily converted into roadways.

### Issues Faced by Residents

Residents reported that the narrowed road, coupled with heavy vehicular traffic and recent rains, resulted in numerous potholes developing on concrete surfaces, asphalt roads, and footpaths. Traffic snarls during peak hours led to long queues and slow movement, aggravating commuter frustration.

PCMC sent three letters to Maha Metro requesting urgent repairs to the service road. However, the initial lack of response added to public dissatisfaction.

### Road Repair Work Commences

Under mounting public pressure and media scrutiny, Maha Metro finally agreed to undertake permanent road repairs. In coordination with traffic authorities, Maha Metro’s Managing Director, Shravan Hardikar, requested phased temporary road closures and traffic diversions to enable unhindered repair work.

Following these arrangements, road repairs commenced on Tuesday, focusing on asphalting the stretch from Nigdi to Chinchwad Station. Officials stated that the work started only after the rains subsided to ensure effective repairs.

Bapusaheb Gaikwad, Joint City Engineer of PCMC, commented:
*”We had corresponded with the Metro administration regarding the repair of the service road. With the end of the rainy season, the Metro has undertaken the road repair work. Asphalting is being done on the road. Instructions have been given to complete the work quickly.”*

The repair work is expected to significantly improve the condition of this critical stretch, making it pothole-free and easing traffic woes for daily commuters.

*This marks a positive step towards addressing the concerns of residents affected by the metro construction and enhancing urban infrastructure in Pimpri-Chinchwad.*

Developed at an estimated cost of ₹19,650 crore, the Navi Mumbai International Airport represents a major milestone in India’s journey towards becoming a global aviation hub. Built under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, it is India’s largest Greenfield airport project and the second international airport serving the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Spread over 1,160 hectares, NMIA has been designed for maximum efficiency, with the capacity to handle 90 million passengers and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo annually. The airport will feature an Automated People Mover (APM) system connecting all four passenger terminals to facilitate smooth inter-terminal transfers. Additionally, another landside APM will link the city-side facilities.

Environmentally conscious in design, NMIA incorporates Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) storage, generates 47 MW of solar power, and operates electric bus services for city-wide connectivity. Furthermore, it will become India’s first airport connected by a Water Taxi service, enhancing accessibility while reducing carbon emissions.

FPJ Impact: Madam Cama Road Reopens After 14 Days With Temporary Fix

Fourteen days after one lane of Madam Cama Road, opposite Mantralaya, was closed due to a burst water pipeline, the main road was finally reopened for traffic on Friday. The reopening was facilitated by placing metal plates over the affected area to allow vehicular movement.

On September 12, a major water pipeline along Madam Cama Road burst, causing a 40-meter stretch of the cement concrete road to cave in. The British-era pipeline was repaired within two days. However, despite the quick repair, the road remained barricaded, leading to significant traffic jams and inconvenience for thousands of motorists, office-goers, and visitors to the state secretariat.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) road department had earlier stated that curing the cement concrete road would require two to three days. Due to this, the road closure persisted even after the pipeline repairs were completed.

To ease the traffic congestion, the BMC placed metal plates on the affected stretch on Thursday night, temporarily reopening the lane for traffic movement. A BMC official commented, “The curing is still underway. The metal plates are put over it in order to open the road for traffic movement, as the closure was causing traffic jams. The metal plates are temporary and will be removed once the curing of the cement concrete road is completed.”

Mumbai News: BMC Considers 2 Alternative Tanks For Malabar Hill Reservoir Repairs

Mumbai: BMC Considers Two Alternative Water Tanks for Malabar Hill Reservoir Repairs

Following a recent official inspection of the Malabar Hill Reservoir (MHR), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is exploring the construction of two alternative water tanks before commencing repair work. The civic authorities are currently assessing the operational feasibility of these alternatives to ensure minimal environmental impact and optimal functionality.

Original Plan and Environmental Concerns

Initially, based on recommendations from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, the BMC planned to construct a single alternative water tank with a capacity of 52 million litres per day (MLD). To reduce environmental impact—particularly the felling of trees—residents of Malabar Hill proposed an alternative location for the project.

In response, officials from the BMC’s Waterworks Department conducted a site visit last month to evaluate the feasibility of this suggestion.

Two Sites Identified for Proposed Tanks

“We have identified two proposed sites: one adjacent to the reservoir and another behind the Hanging Gardens. However, the site next to the reservoir has limited capacity, necessitating the construction of an additional 35 MLD tank,” said a senior civic official.

The official added, “Managing two separate tanks would pose operational challenges, so we are currently assessing the feasibility of operating both alternatives effectively.” They also confirmed that this approach would reduce the number of trees that need to be cut down.

Background of Malabar Hill Reservoir Repairs

The Malabar Hill Reservoir, the oldest reservoir beneath the iconic Hanging Gardens, supplies 147 MLD of water daily to South Mumbai. Initially, the BMC proposed a nearly Rs 1000-crore plan to demolish and reconstruct the structure, which required building a 90 MLD replacement tank and would have impacted 389 trees, including 200 slated for transplantation.

However, experts from IIT-Bombay later concluded that complete reconstruction wasn’t necessary and that repairs would suffice.

Scaled-Down Repair Plan Adopted

In February 2024, an expert panel warned that phased repairs would disrupt the water supply unless an alternative tank was created. Acting on the IIT-Roorkee recommendation, the BMC opted for a scaled-down, vertical tank with a 35–44 MLD capacity to minimize land use and environmental impact.

Following sustained public opposition, the original reconstruction plan was ultimately scrapped.
