A 52-year-old police constable at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex lost ₹94,103 in an online scam. A caller falsely claimed to have transferred ₹30,000 into his account, asking him to return it. After transferring small amounts and following a link, the constable’s account was drained. A case was registered under cheating and IT Act provisions.
The tragic incident left 41 people dead and over 60 injured. The court also rejected the anticipatory bail petitions of two senior TVK leaders and criticised both the party and the police over the mishap.
In a related development, the Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) declined to order a CBI probe in the case since investigation by the police was in the nascent stage but asked the State not to grant permission for political rallies on highways till a Standard Operating Procedure was drafted.
