Yankees head home facing elimination after back-to-back beatdowns in Toronto

TORONTO (AP) — After back-to-back beatdowns in Toronto, the New York Yankees don’t have any margin for error as they head home for Game 3 of the ALDS on Tuesday night.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone put on a brave face after a 13-7 loss Sunday in Game 2 left his team facing elimination.

“Obviously, it feels like the world’s caving in around you, you lose two games like that in their building where it doesn’t go right,” Boone said. “But all of a sudden you go out there and win a ballgame on Tuesday, the needle can change. There’s been a lot of weird things that have happened in baseball this year. This would not be the weirdest, us rallying.”

New York was held hitless through 5 2/3 innings on Sunday, unable to get anything going against Blue Jays rookie Trey Yesavage. The Blue Jays thumped the Yankees 10-1 on Saturday in Game 1.

Toronto’s 23 runs in the ALDS so far are the most by any team in the opening two games of a postseason series. The Yankees scored 22 runs in the first two games of the 2020 Wild Card round against Cleveland.

New York has lost eight of nine in Toronto this season but is 4-2 at home against the Blue Jays.

“We haven’t lost any confidence,” Boone said. “Obviously, they’ve had our number and gotten the better of us so far this year, but I don’t think anyone in our room doesn’t feel like we can’t go out and beat them. We’ve got to play better. We’ve got to pitch and swing it better. But we’re certainly capable of it, and we’ll expect to do that on Tuesday night.”

New York was pushed to the limit by Boston in the Wild Card round and has seen its bullpen tested in the first two games of the ALDS, with seven relievers combining for 10 1/3 innings of work.

“We know where they’re at in terms of their bullpen and everything,” Toronto’s Ernie Clement said about the Yankees. “They just came off a really tough series. It’s really important for us to work them, just make it as tough as possible on them.”

Yankees left-hander Max Fried, who was chased after three-plus innings Sunday, credited the Blue Jays for making it tough on New York’s pitchers.

“They’ve put up good at-bats against us all year,” Fried said. “That’s a good ballclub. They don’t strike out and they put the ball in play and they play good defense. They’re playing their game and they’ve had a good series so far.”

Socceroos’ Bos living the dream at boyhood club

Jordy Bos used to watch Feyenoord highlights. Now, at just 22 years old, he is one of the stars of the show. The Socceroos left-back is dominating for his boyhood club, playing under his former idol, and is just eight months away from potentially featuring in his first World Cup.

Bos, one of the pivotal pieces of the Socceroos’ future, is only just scratching the surface of his promising career. Dutch powerhouse Feyenoord, managed by former Arsenal, Manchester United, and Netherlands striker Robin van Persie, currently sit at the top of the Eredivisie table.

Since joining the Rotterdam giants in July, Bos has become the first Australian to win the Eredivisie Player of the Month award. He has also impressed fans by scoring two sublime goals. The former Melbourne City sensation is reaping the rewards of a carefully managed plan to develop his career and play regularly in Europe.

Even Bos admits he can’t believe how well things have gone since his transfer from Belgian club Westerlo, where he battled two bad hamstring injuries last year.

“When I first went there, I didn’t really know what to expect,” Bos said. “But obviously it’s a big club, so it’s always going to be hard. Before I got there, I heard that the left-back was a little bit injured so I got to play my first game for the Champions League qualifications. From there, it just kept going and then when the other left-back got back, I kept my spot a bit.”

Bos, a Melburnian of Dutch descent, comes from a family of Feyenoord fans.

“Living in Australia when I was younger, it was hard to watch the games, but I remember my dad would always put the highlights on and stuff, so we would watch that,” he said. “It’s a huge deal for my family as well. The ones that live in Holland, I think they were just as excited as I was when they heard about the news. So it’s crazy for them as well, and they always want to come watch the games and stuff like that. So it’s pretty unreal and playing for them is just an honour.”

Bos is also pinching himself that he gets to play under club great Robin van Persie.

“It’s really cool,” he said. “Watching him when I was younger as well and he’s such a big player and icon in the football world. And seeing him in real life and talking to him, and having him there, it’s pretty surreal. I really enjoy it.”

Currently, Bos has joined the Socceroos for upcoming matches against Canada in Montreal on Saturday and the United States in Colorado next Wednesday. These matches provide another chance for him to cement his starting left-back role, especially with stalwart Aziz Behich among the A-League players not selected in this squad.

With a strong World Cup on the horizon and continued impressive performances for both club and country, Bos knows more opportunities could come his way.

“Either Premier League or Bundesliga — probably one of those two,” he said when asked about his future ambitions. “But for right now, obviously, just focusing on where I am. But that’s probably the goal.”

Hot-shooting Eagles battle Maroons, look to avoid second-half letdowns

Tab Baldwin reflected on the recent basketball game between Ateneo and La Salle, highlighting the contrasting performances throughout the match. He noted the choice of focusing on either the strong play Ateneo displayed in the first three quarters or the challenging moment when everything went south during one quarter.

“We’ll do both in the confines of our dugout and in our next practice [and] in the video session,” Baldwin said last Sunday following Ateneo’s 81-74 victory.

This balanced approach aims to address both the positives and areas for improvement as the team prepares for upcoming challenges.

Manitobans eager to strike gold on world stage

Already making history earlier this year when she became the first woman to win the Marinelli City Singles bowling tournament, Marissa Naylor-McCall is now bolstering her training routine as she prepares to represent Team Canada at the 2025 International Bowling Federation (IBF) World Championships.

Naylor-McCall is one of two Manitobans representing Canada at the adult level, alongside Mitch Hupe. Both bowlers attended the last world championships in Kuwait in 2023, where every Team Canada bowler brought home a medal. It was a record year for Canada.

“We all brought home a medal which hasn’t happened in many years,” said Naylor-McCall.

This will be Naylor-McCall’s fourth year representing Team Canada as an adult and her second World Championships tournament. She spoke highly of her teammate Hupe, a three-time National Bowler of the Year who returns for his 12th adult year.

“(Hupe) has lived and breathed it his whole life,” she said. “He can basically do it all.”

Hupe bowled at Wichita State in college, one of the most renowned bowling programs in North America, boasting 24 Intercollegiate Team Championships between the men’s and women’s programs. Naylor-McCall noted that Hupe was the anchor for Team Canada during the 2023 IBF World Championships, where the men took home gold in the team event for the first time.

“He’s a phenomenal person but an even better bowler,” she said. “He’s a phenom in the bowling community here in Manitoba.”

Hupe bowls on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour, where Naylor-McCall will be taking her talents beginning next season. Excited for the opportunity, she isn’t letting it distract her from her current goal to win gold in Hong Kong.

“I’m excited for next year, but Hong Kong is definitely the focus for right now,” said Naylor-McCall. “Then we’ll set our eyes on (the PBA tour) next year.”

Team Canada head coach Tyrel Rose, who re-joined the team in late 2023, said the team is eager to fight for their place on the podium.

“There is a bit of a chip on the shoulder,” said Rose. “There’s definitely a bit of a ‘we still want to prove ourselves’ attitude.”

Several countries didn’t participate in the 2023 world championships held in Kuwait for political reasons. Rose added, “I think when you can come in as a world champion and still come in with an underdog mentality, you’re doing something right.”

Rose said he and Naylor-McCall hit the ground running in their professional relationship.

“We kind of hit it off really well as a coach and an athlete,” said Rose. “(Naylor-McCall) is very driven. She works really hard at everything she does, whether it’s her business, bowling, or golf. She’s like a sponge — she just wants all the coaching all of the time.”

He said her leadership is an asset given the women’s team’s lack of experience.

“(Naylor-McCall) brings that kind of professional energy to the team,” said Rose. “To have that leadership — she brings that to the team as if she was a 10-year veteran.”

Rose noted that Hupe, who won a World Masters Gold in 2018, hasn’t lost his touch.

“He’s still grown from there and developed a sense of confidence in himself that he didn’t have five, six, seven years ago,” said Rose. “He really knows what his strengths are and knows how to play to them.”

Rose was an assistant coach for Team Canada from 2009–12, head coached from 2014–18, before taking some time off to spend with his family. He said the connection he shares with his team is invaluable.

“One of the things that’s always driven me is getting to share in this experience with our players,” said Rose. “That kind of emotional connection, the highs and the lows, it’s great.”

Michael Schmidt, executive director of the Manitoba Tenpin Federation, said he expects the two Manitoba veterans to make the province proud in Hong Kong.

“They have experience, they’ve represented Canada numerous times. They know how to get the job done, and I just wish them as much success as possible, to bring home some more gold medals,” said Schmidt.

For Naylor-McCall, bringing home gold in the singles event is high on her priority list. But winning as a team is her biggest wish.

“The ultimate goal always for these events is winning gold in the team event,” she said. “I know on the women’s side we haven’t medalled in the team event for a long time. We just have to trust in the preparation. If we can keep it simple and just do what we do best, I’m sure that getting on the podium will be pretty easy for us.”

The IBF World Championships start in Hong Kong on November 24.

Heather Knight slams her 27th WODI half-century

**WODI World Cup: Heather Knight’s Unbeaten 79 Guides England to Victory Over Bangladesh**

*By Parth Dhall | October 7, 2025 | 10:37 PM*

In a thrilling encounter at the 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, England secured a hard-fought victory against Bangladesh at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. Chasing a target of 179, what seemed like a modest total proved challenging as England faced a middle-order collapse before rallying to victory.

Bangladesh got off to a strong start with Marufa Akter making early breakthroughs, dismissing England’s openers Amy Jones (1) and Tammy Beaumont (2) as the visitors found themselves struggling at 29 for 2. However, England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt and captain Heather Knight steadied the innings, putting together an important 40-run partnership.

The tide turned quickly when Fahima Khatun struck twice in quick succession, removing Sciver-Brunt for 32 and Sophie Dunkley for a duck, leaving England in deep trouble at 78 for 5. It was then left to Heather Knight to single-handedly guide her team to victory.

Knight remained unbeaten on 79 runs off 111 balls, a patient and composed innings featuring 8 fours and a six. Alongside a resilient Charlotte Dean, who supported with an unbeaten 27*, Knight anchored the chase, eventually bringing England home in 46.1 overs.

**Milestone Achievement for Heather Knight**

This impressive knock not only sealed the win but also marked a personal milestone for Heather Knight. She surpassed Claire Taylor’s run tally of 4,101 runs, becoming the fourth-highest run-scorer for England in Women’s ODIs. Knight now boasts 4,116 runs in 151 WODI matches at an average of 35.79, including two centuries and 27 half-centuries.

Only Charlotte Edwards (5,992), Tammy Beaumont (4,562), and Nat Sciver-Brunt (4,124) sit ahead of her on England’s all-time WODI run-scoring list.

England will look to build on this hard-earned victory as the tournament progresses, while Bangladesh can take heart from a spirited bowling effort and early breakthroughs that challenged a strong English batting line-up.

Why Vaibhav Suryavanshi called RR official early morning from Australia

Why Vaibhav Suryavanshi Called Rajasthan Royals Official Early Morning from Brisbane

By Parth Dhall | Oct 07, 2025 | 03:45 PM

In a hilarious and unusual incident, 14-year-old Indian cricket prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi made an early morning call to Rajasthan Royals’ Director of High Performance, Zubin Bharucha, from Brisbane at 5 AM IST on September 22.

The Story Behind the Call

According to Bharucha’s recount to The Times of India, the conversation took a funny turn when Vaibhav reached out with an urgent question about the stadium lights. Vaibhav was curious about the difference in floodlight setups, pointing out that Brisbane’s stadium had floodlights installed on four separate poles, unlike the Indian Premier League’s usual single-pole arrangement.

The Communication Barrier: Early Morning Chat

The chat got even more animated as Vaibhav moved his phone camera toward the ground, asking, “Sir, can you see this light?” A bewildered Bharucha replied, “I have never been to Brisbane in my life, Vaibhav.” It took a moment for Bharucha to realize what Vaibhav was trying to show him.

When Bharucha failed to understand the purpose of the unusual early morning call, Vaibhav finally expressed his frustration, saying, “I can’t see the ball while playing.” This simple yet earnest concern highlighted the challenges young players face when adapting to different playing conditions abroad.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s Performance Down Under

Vaibhav Suryavanshi is currently in Australia as part of India’s Under-19 squad for Youth One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Youth Tests. In the three Youth ODIs against Australia U-19, he posted scores of 38, 70, and 16, contributing significantly to India’s 3-0 series whitewash in Brisbane.

In the subsequent 1st Youth Test, Vaibhav shone brightly, scoring a resilient 113 runs off 86 balls, helping India U-19 win by an innings and 58 runs.

Setting Massive Records in Youth Cricket

During the 50-over Youth ODIs against Australia, Vaibhav shattered records by hitting his 39th six, surpassing the previous Youth ODI record held by former India U-19 captain Unmukt Chand. This remarkable feat underscores his power-hitting prowess at such a young age.

Other Remarkable Achievements

Earlier this year, Vaibhav made history by becoming the youngest player to feature in the Indian Premier League, debuting for Rajasthan Royals. Notably, he scored a blazing 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans, which stands as the second-fastest hundred in IPL history. This innings also made him the youngest centurion in men’s T20 cricket.

Across seven IPL innings, Vaibhav amassed 252 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 206.55 (including 50 sixes and 1 fifty). Among all batters facing at least 100 deliveries in the season, no one maintained a higher strike rate, highlighting his extraordinary ability to score quickly and consistently.

Conclusion

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s incredible talent, combined with his curiosity and commitment — as seen in his early morning call to Rajasthan Royals — marks him as a rising star in Indian cricket. As he continues to impress both domestically and internationally, cricket fans have much to look forward to from this young prodigy.
