A beacon of hope for St James, Hanover

The announcement came on a warm Thursday evening at King’s House in St Andrew. Beneath the high ceilings and the quiet anticipation of the gathered crowd, Governor General Sir Patrick Allen read the name that would carry both pride and hope to Jamaica’s western shores: Tiana Dinham, the 2026 Jamaica Rhodes Scholar.

“I am in disbelief,” she said, reacting to the news. “I knew I was a finalist. I was here to interview for the scholarship, but there was also that slight moment where [I thought] maybe I won’t get it,” she told *The Gleaner*. “I can’t fully express the excitement, the joy I feel. I also know that my family will be elated for this accomplishment.”

For most, the Rhodes Scholarship is a dream painted in Oxford’s spires—a passport to one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Established in 1902 through the will of Cecil Rhodes, the scholarship seeks young leaders with outstanding intellect, character, leadership, and commitment to service.

Each year, a select few from across the Commonwealth are chosen to study at the University of Oxford, joining a global community of thinkers and changemakers.

For Dinham, however, this moment was more than an academic triumph. It was a spark of light in a season of darkness.

A little over two weeks before, Hurricane Melissa tore through western Jamaica, leaving communities in ruin. In St James, where Dinham had attended Mount Alvernia High School, and in Hanover, where she was raised, homes were swept away and families were left without food, water, or shelter.

Yet even amid devastation, she said her achievement carried the weight of shared resilience.

“I think we are looking forward to some good news because, as you can imagine, this entire hurricane situation has brought a lot of devastation to a lot of people. They lost their homes, they don’t have food, they don’t have water. So even just a small thing of just winning the scholarship will bring joy to some people like hope at the end of the tunnel,” the 22-year-old told *The Gleaner* shortly after the announcement.

“I think this win is another win for my entire high school community as well as my regular community that I live in in Maryland,” said Dinham, who is currently pursuing studies in geographical and earth sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

With the Rhodes Scholarship, she intends to pursue graduate studies in water science, policy and management, or sustainability, enterprise, and the environment.

When the announcement came, her first instinct was to call her mother. She shed tears as her mom shouted praises, telling her daughter how proud she was.

Dinham had known the competition would be fierce. She noted that the shortlisted group of nine contenders were all exceptional, each with dreams as big as her own.

“The other eight finalists were amazing. Some of them will be friends I will keep going forward. We’ve built this bond over the course of this day, and it’s kind of sad that they haven’t gotten it as well, but I am super excited that the work I have done has got me this far and got me this recognition, and I look forward to using this scholarship to further the work I am doing in Jamaica.”

Torn Light Records reopens after a month of mopping up

Torn Light Records Relocates to Chicago’s Bucktown Neighborhood Amid Setbacks

Torn Light Records moved from Cincinnati to Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood in June 2024 and quickly established itself as one of our city’s premier record stores. However, in early October, broken plumbing in the unit above Torn Light flooded the shop four times within a 48-hour period, forcing owners Alex York and Dan Buckley to temporarily shutter the storefront.

“It was a very scary month,” York says. “Truly horrible, making zero dollars for a month. For a small business, it doesn’t work. We don’t have excess cash.”

Earlier in November, York and Buckley received some funds from their insurance company and have been diligently working to reopen the shop. York hopes to be back in business this weekend.

York estimates that Torn Light lost nearly 5,000 records due to water damage, including 3,000 seven-inch records that made up the shop’s entire online inventory. “The sections that were hit were jazz, modern classical, avant-garde,” he explains. “So kind of our hallmarks for larger sales and things that people traveling will stop in to buy from us.”

Over the past month, York and Buckley have depleted their modest savings to pay staff while waiting on their insurance claim. York says insurance is helping cover the cost of replacing the custom furniture that Buckley built for Torn Light, but even with that payout, restocking remains a challenge for a shop that mostly sells used records, CDs, and cassettes.

“A lot of the inventory we have, it’s not necessarily replaceable,” York says. “Of course, I could find a Cecil Taylor LP again, but if I have it out for $20, I probably found it for $12 somewhere—how the hell am I gonna find that again? We’re just having to do whatever we can.”

Torn Light’s staff have come to terms with the necessity to reopen the shop with a slimmer selection. “Reopening without our jazz section is crazy to me,” York admits, “but I’m just trying to let go of it and say, ‘This is just a small blip in time in a much larger lineage of the store. We will have jazz records again.’”

Avondale Venue the Fallen Log Announces Closure

Last week, word spread through Chicago’s DIY scene that Avondale venue the Fallen Log was closing. On Friday, the business made it official with a public announcement: its last day would be Sunday, November 23.

The Fallen Log shares ownership and a building with vegan pizza spot Kitchen 17, which is also closing. “We decided to close for the same reason many businesses close: Unfortunately, the bottom line just wasn’t there,” says co-owner Joe Mertz.

Mertz and co-owner Jennie Plasterer opened the Fallen Log in March 2023, shortly after moving Kitchen 17 to Avondale from Lakeview. The venue quickly became one of Chicago’s most interesting spots, hosting a range of underground bands that typically perform in DIY spaces. Most shows were all-ages, a rarity among aboveground venues in the city.

Cole Hunt of TV Buddha served as the Fallen Log’s talent buyer for about a year and a half, often bringing in emerging acts from the Hallogallo indie-rock scene. Even after he moved on, that scene maintained strong ties to the venue. For example, in August, Peter Cimbalo (live drummer for Kai Slater’s Sharp Pins project) celebrated his new psych-tinged album as Alga with a full-band set at Fallen Log.

“I hope someone comes in and continues the venue, especially the all-ages portion,” Mertz says. “It’s hard to do, but I have really come to believe that it is important for the community, and I hope that some of that legacy lives on.”

The Fallen Log will host a closing party and farewell show on Tuesday, November 25, though details had not been announced by publication time.

Public Works Launches “Fuck ICE: A Popular American Sentiment” T-Shirt

Last week, Public Works launched preorders for a T-shirt called “Fuck ICE: A Popular American Sentiment.” Public Works is a Wicker Park gallery, shop, and venue connected to design studio and music label Someoddpilot.

The new shirt features a photo of a miked-up amplifier cabinet with “Fuck ICE” spelled out in tape across its grille. The shirts cost $40, with approximately $25 from each sale going to Palenque LSNA, an immigrant-focused liberatory community organization, and other efforts supporting those harmed by ICE. The first run of shirts begins shipping Saturday, November 15.

Ira Glass to Release New EP, Celebrates with Free Empty Bottle Show

On Friday, November 14, Chicago posthardcore band Ira Glass will release their new EP, Joy Is No Knocking Nation, their second for Fire Talk imprint Angel Tapes. This release highlights more of Jill Roth’s saxophone blasts, underscoring the dread in Lise Ivanova’s half-spoken, half-screamed vocals.

To celebrate, Ira Glass will headline a free show at the Empty Bottle on Monday, November 17. Repent and Alive Girl will open, and Henry Tegethoff will spin between sets. Music starts at 9 PM.

Lia Kohl and Alta Vista Celebrate New Records at Constellation

Cellist and sound artist Lia Kohl releases her latest solo album, Various Small Whistles and a Song, on Friday, November 14. She performs the same night at Constellation alongside Chicago postrock trio Alta Vista, who are also celebrating a new record: Won’t Believe in Dust, which builds on the searching, warped Americana sound of their 2023 self-titled debut.

Tickets cost $20.72, and the show begins at 8:30 PM.

Sony Panicking? Rapid Release of the Sony A7 IV

After Canon released the impressive R6 Mark III, packed with features never before seen in a prosumer-scale camera body, the rumor mill in Sony land seems to have gone into overdrive. This is likely fueled by concerns over the fact that the R6 Mark II is already the world’s best-selling full-frame camera. Canon has clearly decided to outclass that camera in almost every way with the Canon R6 Mark III.

The rumored specifications for Sony’s upcoming model seem somewhat lightweight, which makes me wonder if this is simply a strategic move to get something new on shelves just before Christmas. You know, just in case someone actually wants to purchase a Sony camera. Who knows, maybe Sony has been “naughty” this year—it might even be a decent substitute for coal in 2025!

Here are the rumored specifications from Sony Alpha Rumors so far:
– 33MP sensor (could be new or the same as the A7 III)
– Improved fps rate
– 8 stops IBIS
– New AI chip, similar to the Sony A1 II
– Free-angle tilting 3.2″ touchscreen LCD
– Dual Type A SD card slots (2x)
– No C5 button
– Improved EVF (possibly 5.6 million dots)
– Same body design as the Sony A7R V
– Price close to $3000
– Announcement expected in early December
– Limited batch shipping before Christmas

There are a few things I wish Canon had done with their camera, such as including a free-angle tilting screen rather than just an articulating LCD, since I’m personally not a fan of articulating screens. I would prefer one that tilts.

One unconfirmed but interesting rumor is that the Sony A7 IV will not feature Open Gate, will lack Pre-Capture (which Canon has had since the R6 Mark II), and 4K60p video will still be cropped—something Canon has eliminated on the R6 Mark II. Ouch.

The price is also a bit surprising given the lack of some expected features. The original A7 III launched at $1999, but this new camera is rumored to come in near the R6 Mark III price point, despite offering a less comprehensive feature set. If the price is accurate, I’m inclined to believe these specifications might not exactly reflect the final product. I may not be a huge Sony fan, but I doubt Sony would be this out of touch.

It’s worth noting this isn’t the first time Sony has released a camera in late November; the A1 II was announced on November 19, 2024. So it’s entirely possible Sony will do the same this year.

Finally, I want to be fair and avoid ruffling too many feathers with this rumor article. Without Sony’s push and drive in the mirrorless market, we wouldn’t have the amazing Canon cameras we see today. Competition is essential, and if Sony does surprise us with a new camera before year’s end, the next 30 days will be quite interesting indeed.

SCOOP: Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani’s Dadasaheb Phalke Biopic shelved due to script issues

Earlier this year, Bollywood stalwarts Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani announced their much-anticipated reunion for a third time, collaborating on the yet untitled Dadasaheb Phalke Biopic. The announcement sparked a wave of excitement among fans and industry watchers alike, especially after their successful collaborations in cult films like *3 Idiots* and *P.K.*

However, in a surprising development, the duo has decided to put the Dadasaheb Phalke Biopic on hold.

### SCOOP: Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani’s Dadasaheb Phalke Biopic Shelved Due to Script Issues

Reliable sources have confirmed to Bollywood Hungama that Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani, known for their pursuit of perfection, were not satisfied with the current script of the biopic. According to the sources, “Aamir felt that the script is too dry for today’s audience and lacks the signature humour that fans expect from their collaborations.”

Despite numerous rewrite sessions, the duo collectively decided to pause the project. They believe that a personality as iconic as Dadasaheb Phalke deserves a script that is both emotionally stirring and universally engaging. Until they achieve that benchmark, they have no intention of rushing the film into production.

### What’s Next for Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani?

Meanwhile, Aamir Khan is busy reading multiple scripts as he explores options to lock in his next project. “He is currently reviewing at least 20 shortlisted scripts and plans to announce his next film in the first quarter of 2026,” insiders reveal.

Rajkumar Hirani has also begun the process of identifying his next subject and will soon start writing. Although the Dadasaheb Phalke Biopic is on hold, fans can rest assured that Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani will reunite for another project in the near future.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting collaboration!

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont to seek third term in 2026

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont filed the necessary paperwork on Friday to seek a third term in 2026. The Democrat, who has been asked by reporters for months about whether he will run again, said a formal announcement will likely be made next week.

“Yeah, Susan and I are ready to go,” he said during an event about affordable housing, referring to Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz. “I didn’t want you to have to ask me any longer.”

Lamont’s candidate registration form was filed Friday afternoon with the State Elections Enforcement Commission.

Lamont, 71, a wealthy former cable entrepreneur, has developed a reputation as a fiscal moderate. He has signed a major tax cut and worked to pay down unfunded state pension liabilities. Additionally, he has supported access to abortion through safe harbor laws and advocated for greater protections for immigrants.

Notably, Lamont was one of two Democratic governors who attended President Donald Trump’s inauguration. He has carefully chosen which issues to criticize the Republican on, a tactic that has drawn complaints from more liberal Democrats in Connecticut. Some critics have also taken issue with his budgeting approach, deeming it too conservative.

No Connecticut governor has served three consecutive terms in modern times. Former Republican Gov. John G. Rowland was elected to a third consecutive term in November 2002 but resigned in 2004 amid a corruption scandal.

Commanders defensive coordinator makes surprising admission

Sometimes in life, you think you really understand what happened. But then you learn a few more pieces of the puzzle, and suddenly you realize you had it all wrong.

That was the case with the recent announcement that Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Joe Whitt was moving down to the sidelines during games.

The Commanders’ defense has been struggling severely, leaving receivers wide open time and time again. With their fourth consecutive loss on Sunday against Seattle, the defense surrendered four touchdowns in the Seahawks’ first four possessions. It seemed obvious that head coach Dan Quinn had seen enough and confronted Whitt, demanding a significant change. After all, the defense’s recent performance had been completely unacceptable, and Whitt’s current approach appeared mostly ineffective.

Surely, Quinn told Whitt he wanted him down on the sideline starting this week against Detroit. Surely, Quinn emphasized the need for Whitt to be more involved with his defensive personnel on the field when the offense had possession of the ball.

But no— I had it wrong. All wrong.

During his Thursday press conference, Whitt surprised everyone by revealing that it was actually him who went to Quinn to ask if he could move down to the sideline on game days.

Whitt explained that he preferred being up in the press box because it gave him a better view of the entire defense and the offensive personnel changes. However, he added, “A couple of guys have been asking for me to come down as well. And so, I think it’s time for that to happen.”

“We gotta do whatever we have to do to get a win,” Whitt continued. “The play has not been, especially this last week, to the standard at all. And like I said, that starts with me. I gotta do a better job getting the coaches to get the players to understand how we’re going to do it.”

Wow. This was not the narrative I “knew” at all.

This change was not initiated by Dan Quinn. It was not a decision imposed because terrible situations demanded a shakeup. Nor was it a mandate from the head coach about altering Whitt’s method on game days.

Instead, it was Whitt’s own idea—a proactive step from the defensive coordinator himself.

Now, with this new development, I’m not quite sure what to make of it either. But this much is clear: sometimes, what we think we understand is far from the entire story.

MVP, Powerhouse Hobbs, and others react after major AEW star reveals devastating news amid absence

MVP, Powerhouse Hobbs, Shane Taylor, Kevin Knight, and other AEW stars recently shared their reactions after a major wrestling star revealed some devastating news. The star in question is none other than Brian Cage, a key member of the Don Callis Family, who has been sidelined since April of this year due to a knee injury.

Brian Cage played a significant role in the Don Callis-led faction and was part of the tag team “Murder Machines” alongside Lance Archer in the Jacksonville-based company. Unfortunately, Cage suffered a knee injury in April that required surgery. In a recent Instagram post, he revealed that the surgery was unsuccessful, meaning he will need to undergo another operation on his injured knee.

In the announcement video, Cage showcased his impressive physique despite the setback, demonstrating his determination to recover. The news prompted an outpouring of support from wrestling stars across various promotions, wishing him a speedy recovery.

Among those sending well wishes were fellow AEW talents such as MVP, Powerhouse Hobbs, Kevin Knight, and Prince Nana. Fans are hopeful that the former FTW Champion will overcome this injury soon and make his much-anticipated return to the squared circle.

Interestingly, former AEW star Jade Cargill also extended her support to Brian Cage. Cargill, who made a high-profile move from AEW to WWE in recent years, recently turned heel on SmackDown and captured the WWE Women’s Championship by decisively defeating Tiffany Stratton at last weekend’s Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Despite the rivalry between their respective companies, Cargill took to the comments section of Cage’s announcement post to leave a heartfelt and motivational message: “Praying for you. Keep pushing. Machines don’t stop! You got this!”

It’s encouraging to see wrestlers standing united in support of their peers, proving that camaraderie transcends company lines in the world of professional wrestling. We wish Brian Cage a full and speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back in action soon.

‘Wicked’ star Jonathan Bailey named People magazine’s 2025 ‘Sexiest Man Alive’

He’s dancing through life. Jonathan Bailey, 37, was named the 2025 “Sexiest Man Alive” by People magazine. Page Six broke the news hours before the official announcement happened Monday night on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

The “Wicked: For Good” star told Fallon, 51, that being selected for the title is “the honor of a lifetime” and that he’s “still giggling” about it. Bailey explained that he found out the exciting news earlier this year while performing in Shakespeare’s *Richard II*.

“For those of you who don’t know, it’s not a comedy,” he said about the production. “I think we were 30 shows into 103 shows. I was in the zone. So you go slightly mad, and the only thing madder than doing ‘Richard II’ is being invited into this.”

“And also in 2025, I’m sort of thrilled People magazine has invited someone in to bestow this honor on someone who can really cherish the value of a sexy man,” the “Bridgerton” star added.

Bailey also admitted that he drunkenly told some of his friends on a trip that he was the “Sexiest Man Alive.”

“They were like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, do your affirmations,’” he said with a laugh.

In his interview with People, Bailey shared that many of his friends will “be furious” he didn’t give them a heads up about his new title. “And then they’ll just squeal with delight,” he told the outlet. “They’ve seen me grow up. Behind the mask of being identified as a sexy man are other truths that they know and they’ve witnessed. They know the secrets.”

The “Jurassic World Rebirth” actor also opened up about his hopes for the future, saying he wants to be a dad one day “if the planets align.” When asked about his perfect date, Bailey explained it “totally depends” on how new the relationship is.

“I love a walk, I do love dinner, theater, films. It depends what number date,” he said. “You know, if it’s like date 100, then like Legos, although we Brits say it singular ‘Lego,’ and pizza. Some of my best dates have been Lego dates.”

At the end of the interview, Bailey gushed that he feels “incredibly lucky” in his life right now.

“Life is a ride for everyone no matter who you are, where you come from,” he said. “It’s just making sure that when you’re in the ride, you’re looking left and right and making sure everyone’s all right. And give them a high-five along the way if they need it.”
