Mike Flanagan’s ‘The Exorcist’ Gets Spring 2027 Release Date; Scarlett Johansson and ‘Hamnet’ Breakout Jacobi Jupe to Star

There’s an exorcism scheduled at the box office for spring 2027. Mike Flanagan’s “The Exorcist” movie, starring Scarlett Johansson and “Hamnet” breakout Jacobi Jupe, is set to be released on March 12, 2027, Universal announced Friday.

Flanagan is writing, directing, and producing this newest installment, which has been described as a “radical new take” on the property. Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson (“Jurassic World Rebellion,” “JoJo Rabbit”) stars opposite Jacobi Jupe, who gained acclaim for his role in “Hamnet.”

The movie is a production collaboration between Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek Entertainment, in association with Red Room Pictures.

The original “Exorcist,” directed by William Friedkin, tells the story of a mother (Ellen Burstyn) who hires two Catholic priests to perform an exorcism on her demonically possessed 12-year-old daughter (Linda Blair). Released in 1973, the film was both a critical and commercial success, grossing $441 million worldwide and earning 10 Oscar nominations.

In 2021, Universal made a significant investment, spending $400 million to acquire the rights for a new “Exorcist” trilogy. The 2023 installment, “The Exorcist: Believer,” brought back Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil and earned $136 million at the global box office.

Flanagan’s upcoming film will be set in the same universe as the 1973 classic; however, it is not a sequel to “Believer.”

More details are expected to come in the coming months.
