Mike Flanagan’s ‘The Exorcist’ Gets Spring 2027 Release Date; Scarlett Johansson and ‘Hamnet’ Breakout Jacobi Jupe to Star

There’s an exorcism scheduled at the box office for spring 2027. Mike Flanagan’s “The Exorcist” movie, starring Scarlett Johansson and “Hamnet” breakout Jacobi Jupe, is set to be released on March 12, 2027, Universal announced Friday.

Flanagan is writing, directing, and producing this newest installment, which has been described as a “radical new take” on the property. Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson (“Jurassic World Rebellion,” “JoJo Rabbit”) stars opposite Jacobi Jupe, who gained acclaim for his role in “Hamnet.”

The movie is a production collaboration between Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek Entertainment, in association with Red Room Pictures.

The original “Exorcist,” directed by William Friedkin, tells the story of a mother (Ellen Burstyn) who hires two Catholic priests to perform an exorcism on her demonically possessed 12-year-old daughter (Linda Blair). Released in 1973, the film was both a critical and commercial success, grossing $441 million worldwide and earning 10 Oscar nominations.

In 2021, Universal made a significant investment, spending $400 million to acquire the rights for a new “Exorcist” trilogy. The 2023 installment, “The Exorcist: Believer,” brought back Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil and earned $136 million at the global box office.

Flanagan’s upcoming film will be set in the same universe as the 1973 classic; however, it is not a sequel to “Believer.”

More details are expected to come in the coming months.

Ryan Coogler Confirms ‘Black Panther 3’ Is His “Next Movie”

After ridding the Mississippi Delta of vampires (and a few Klansmen) with *Sinners*, Ryan Coogler is ready to get back to Wakanda.

While speaking onstage Saturday during the *Sinners* panel at Deadline Contenders Film: Los Angeles, the two-time Oscar nominee confirmed to Mike Fleming Jr. that *Black Panther 3* is his “next movie” as he works hard to complete the MCU trilogy that began with Chadwick Boseman in 2018.

“If it was anybody but you, I would say, ‘I can neither confirm or deny,’” teased Coogler. “But we’re working on it hard. Yeah, it’s the next movie.”

In November 2024, Denzel Washington hinted that he is being considered for a role in the third installment of *Black Panther*. During an interview in Australia promoting *Gladiator II*, he revealed that Coogler was “writing a part for me,” a detail the director has since confirmed.

Chadwick Boseman first portrayed the role of T’Challa, debuting in 2016’s *Captain America: Civil War*, followed by the *Black Panther* feature film in 2018. He reprised his superhero role in 2018’s *Avengers: Infinity War* and 2019’s *Avengers: Endgame*.

After Boseman’s tragic death from colon cancer in August 2020, *Black Panther: Wakanda Forever* was released in 2022 and dedicated to his memory. The film continued the story following the death of T’Challa, with Letitia Wright’s Shuri stepping up to take on the heroic mantle.

With Coogler back at the helm, fans can look forward to the next chapter in the *Black Panther* saga as the MCU trilogy nears its completion.

‘Frozen 3’: Kristen Bell Has Seen Script, Says Cast Begins Production ‘Soon’

Winter is coming. Kristen Bell has revealed that the cast of “Frozen 3” will “soon” begin production on the highly anticipated third installment of the hit animated movie musical franchise.

Although Bell, who voices Anna, hasn’t heard any of the new songs for “Frozen 3,” she disclosed that she has seen the script. “That’s all I can say. I’m under lock and key,” she explained, adding some insight into the script development process.

“It’s all mostly like concept stuff in the beginning like, ‘Here’s where we think it should go,’” Bell said. “That’s the one great thing about Disney — it goes through a thousand filters, not to be diplomatic, but because everyone’s going to add something different. That’s why the movies play so well because they hit every single mark; nothing has been missed.”

“Frozen 3” is slated for release in 2027. Visual development art unveiled in August 2024 offers a glimpse into the film, featuring Elsa (Idina Menzel) on a white horse and Anna on a brown stag.

The original “Frozen” was written and co-directed by Jennifer Lee alongside Chris Buck. The Oscar-winning animated feature, as well as its 2019 sequel “Frozen II,” are set in the fictional kingdom of Arendelle and feature a voice cast led by Bell, Menzel, Jonathan Groff as Kristoff, and Josh Gad as the lovable snowman Olaf. The first “Frozen” premiered in 2013, followed by the sequel six years later.

I caught up with Bell on Thursday night at the “Nobody Wants This” Season 2 premiere at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. The show, which follows two sisters who co-host a podcast, features a guest appearance by Leighton Meester, wife of Bell’s co-star Adam Brody, in its second season.

When asked about her husband Dax Shepard potentially appearing on the show, Bell was candid. “He probably ‘never’ will,” she said. “He likes podcasting,” referring to Shepard’s popular series, *Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard.*

“But it’s still acting and there’s a whole thing that comes along with that. It’s like you have to do hair and makeup, memorize the lines, and then you’re there all day,” Bell continued. “He’s so happy and content with his career. I mean, he would if I asked him, obviously, but I don’t want him to do anything he isn’t craving.”

“Nobody Wants This” Season 2 premieres on Netflix on October 23. Fans can look forward to more heartfelt storytelling and compelling performances from Bell and the cast.
