Key World Leaders Skip Talks Before COP30 as 1.5C Goal Slips Away

World leaders are set to deliver a message of solidarity and renewed resolve to address global warming, just days before the start of the COP30 climate summit in Brazil. This comes despite lackluster attendance and the erosion of a key goal to curb rising temperatures.

The summit will take place in the Amazonian city of Belém on Thursday and Friday, where more than 50 heads of state and government ministers are expected to attend. However, the atmosphere is markedly different from a decade ago.

Gone is the confidence and grand ambition that united nearly 200 nations during the adoption of the landmark Paris Agreement. In its place is a gnawing sense of urgency and the hard reality of implementing climate promises.

This is especially true as the accord’s most ambitious goal—to keep warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels—moves further out of grasp. The challenges ahead underscore the critical need for renewed commitment and effective action at COP30.

Wind decreases through the weekend

Gusty winds prevailed today and will continue tonight through most of tomorrow, gradually easing by the end of the weekend. Aside from the breezy conditions, it looks to be a decent weekend with mostly sunshine and cool temperatures.

The strengthening area of low pressure that brought rain from yesterday through this morning is now moving away. High pressure will settle in by Sunday, allowing the pressure gradient to weaken. As a result, the wind won’t be as strong by the end of the weekend.

Wind gusts will remain strongest tomorrow, especially in the morning, with gusts near or above 30 mph possible. While noticeable, this won’t pose a damaging wind threat for most areas. It will stay breezy through tomorrow evening before the wind relaxes overnight into Sunday. Sunday afternoon will see only a light breeze.

Saturday morning temperatures will start in the low 40s, then rebound to the mid-50s under mostly sunny skies. With clear skies and lighter winds Saturday night, temperatures will drop to near freezing by Sunday morning. Sunday will be a cold start, and the day will stay cool with highs mainly in the low 50s under mostly sunny conditions.

Don’t forget, Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend—hello to 6:00 a.m. sunrises and 4:30 p.m. sunsets!

The weekend will remain dry, with the next chance of showers arriving Monday night and lingering into early Tuesday morning.

Xcel warns of fire risk, possible power shutoffs as winds hit Colorado

Xcel Energy Warns of Critical Fire Weather and Potential Power Outages in Colorado

DENVER – Xcel Energy is warning residents of critical fire weather and potential power outages on Monday as a cold front moves into Colorado’s Front Range, dropping temperatures to around 60 degrees.

The utility company is currently evaluating whether to proactively turn off power for customers in Adams, Boulder, Jefferson, and eastern Denver counties on Monday. Xcel Energy emphasized that a public safety power shutoff is not a decision taken lightly and is only used when other methods are insufficient to prevent wildfires.

Customers who rely on medical equipment are urged to prepare for possible extended outages and ensure they have necessary backups in place.

Weather Alerts and Conditions

A Denver7 Weather Action Day is in effect for Monday due to high winds and elevated fire danger across the entire Denver metro area. Very windy conditions are expected to develop late Sunday night into Monday morning, impacting Colorado’s higher terrain and plains.

The National Weather Service predicts the foothills may experience brief wind gusts up to 75 mph between 9 a.m. and noon. Mountain peaks above 10,500 feet could face gusts up to 80 mph through midday, while the Eastern Plains will see widespread gusts of 45-55 mph, with isolated gusts reaching 60 mph. A fire weather watch remains in effect.

Emergency Preparedness Recommendations

Xcel Energy encourages all customers to prepare an emergency kit at home, which should include:

  • Battery-powered radio
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries
  • Backup phone chargers
  • A phone that does not require electricity
  • Non-electric alarm clock

Additional Weather Information

Light mountain snow is possible on Monday north of Interstate 70, while the plains will remain mostly dry and cooler with highs in the 60s. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to bring pleasant fall weather before another temperature drop and a chance of rain arrive on Thursday.
