‘Dangerously cold’ wind chills as low as minus 25 expected in Chicago area Saturday night

Bitterly Cold Temperatures to Sweep Chicago Area This Weekend

The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory for northern and central Illinois and northwest Indiana from 8 p.m. Saturday through noon Sunday. Wind chills are expected to fall between –15°F and –25°F Saturday night, with the coldest conditions in northwest Illinois. Temperatures will remain below zero on Sunday.

Chicago Bears Game Forecast
When the Chicago Bears take on the Cleveland Browns at Soldier Field on Sunday at noon, forecasters predict a high of just 12°F. Lows will dip back into the single digits by nightfall, making it one of the coldest games in the stadium’s history.

Health and Safety Concerns
Dangerously cold wind chills can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. The National Weather Service recommends:
• Dressing in layers, including a warm hat and insulated gloves
• Limiting time outdoors and taking frequent warm-up breaks
• Checking on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors

Local Preparations
• Some suburbs have canceled activities and holiday events planned for the weekend.
• The city of Chicago has opened several warming centers on Saturday and Sunday, including libraries and Chicago Park District locations.
• The Garfield Community Service Center at 10 South Kedzie Ave. is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• All Chicago Police Department districts are open 24 hours a day for anyone seeking shelter.

Looking Ahead
The National Weather Service says temperatures should rebound by midweek, rising back into the 30s and potentially the 40s by Wednesday or Thursday.

Oahu, Kauai, Niihau under flood watch starting late Saturday

A rain-packed weather front approaching Hawaii promises heavy rain and possible thunderstorms for the western islands from late Saturday through early next week, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu today issued a flood watch for Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau from late Saturday night through late Monday night.

“The potential for locally heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms will increase across the western end of the state as a front approaches from the northwest on Saturday, then stalls Sunday and Monday,” forecasters said.

They warned that flood-prone roads and low-lying areas may be closed due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams. “Urban areas may receive more significant flooding and property damage due to rapid runoff,” according to the flood watch.

The weather service noted that rainfall will be limited today and early Saturday, but a “stronger, moisture-laden front” will bring “enhanced showers and possible thunderstorms” to the western end of the state Sunday through Tuesday.
