Commanders defensive coordinator makes surprising admission

Sometimes in life, you think you really understand what happened. But then you learn a few more pieces of the puzzle, and suddenly you realize you had it all wrong.

That was the case with the recent announcement that Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Joe Whitt was moving down to the sidelines during games.

The Commanders’ defense has been struggling severely, leaving receivers wide open time and time again. With their fourth consecutive loss on Sunday against Seattle, the defense surrendered four touchdowns in the Seahawks’ first four possessions. It seemed obvious that head coach Dan Quinn had seen enough and confronted Whitt, demanding a significant change. After all, the defense’s recent performance had been completely unacceptable, and Whitt’s current approach appeared mostly ineffective.

Surely, Quinn told Whitt he wanted him down on the sideline starting this week against Detroit. Surely, Quinn emphasized the need for Whitt to be more involved with his defensive personnel on the field when the offense had possession of the ball.

But no— I had it wrong. All wrong.

During his Thursday press conference, Whitt surprised everyone by revealing that it was actually him who went to Quinn to ask if he could move down to the sideline on game days.

Whitt explained that he preferred being up in the press box because it gave him a better view of the entire defense and the offensive personnel changes. However, he added, “A couple of guys have been asking for me to come down as well. And so, I think it’s time for that to happen.”

“We gotta do whatever we have to do to get a win,” Whitt continued. “The play has not been, especially this last week, to the standard at all. And like I said, that starts with me. I gotta do a better job getting the coaches to get the players to understand how we’re going to do it.”

Wow. This was not the narrative I “knew” at all.

This change was not initiated by Dan Quinn. It was not a decision imposed because terrible situations demanded a shakeup. Nor was it a mandate from the head coach about altering Whitt’s method on game days.

Instead, it was Whitt’s own idea—a proactive step from the defensive coordinator himself.

Now, with this new development, I’m not quite sure what to make of it either. But this much is clear: sometimes, what we think we understand is far from the entire story.

Solana (SOL) Struggles to Rebound, $165 Level Proves Tough to Crack

Solana (SOL) started a fresh decline below the $165 pivot zone. Currently, SOL price is attempting to recover but faces hurdles near the $165 resistance area.

The price initially dropped below $162 and $160 against the US Dollar and is now trading below $162 and the 100-hourly simple moving average (SMA). On the hourly chart of the SOL/USD pair (data source: Kraken), a new bearish trend line has formed, with resistance at $159.

### Solana Price Faces Hurdles

After extending losses below $150, Solana saw some bullish activity similar to Bitcoin and Ethereum. SOL tested the $145 zone before starting a recovery wave. It managed to move above the $150 and $155 resistance levels, climbing past the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement level of the downward move from the $188 swing high to the $145 low.

Despite this recovery, bears remain active near the $162-$165 resistance zone. The newly formed bearish trend line with resistance at $159 continues to cap upside momentum. SOL is still trading below $162 and the 100-hourly SMA.

On the upside, immediate resistance is near $160 and along the trend line, with the next major barrier around $162. The key resistance to watch is $165 — a successful close above this level could set the pace for another steady increase.

If SOL breaks above $165, the next key resistance lies near $172, corresponding to the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level of the downward move from $188 to $145. Further gains could potentially push the price toward the $180 level.

### Potential for Further Decline

If SOL fails to break above the $160 resistance, downward pressure may resume. Initial support is near the $150 zone, followed by stronger support around $145.

A break below $145 could lead the price toward the $138 support area. Should the price close below $138, the next significant support level to watch is near $130, indicating further downside risk in the near term.

### Technical Indicators

– **Hourly MACD:** The MACD for SOL/USD is gaining momentum in the bearish zone, signaling continued downward pressure.
– **Hourly RSI (Relative Strength Index):** The RSI remains below the 50 level, suggesting weak buying momentum.

### Key Levels to Watch

– **Major Support Levels:** $150 and $145
– **Major Resistance Levels:** $160 and $165

In summary, Solana is at a critical juncture. Traders should watch for a decisive break above $165 to confirm a bullish reversal, while a failure to overcome $160 resistance could lead to further declines toward key support zones.

Hong Kong Sixes 2025: “It’s no surprise…” – Joe Denly heaps praise on once-teammate Shubman Gill’s swift rise [Exclusive]

Little over a month ago, Joe Denly was grinding it out in the County Championship with Kent in Canterbury in a Division Two clash against Lancashire. Fast forward to now, he is in a different corner of the world, leading the England outfit in the 2025 Hong Kong Sixes, which just goes on to show you that modern cricket never ceases to amaze.

As a certified veteran of the game, Joe Denly has nearly experienced all that cricket has to offer. Whether it be the rigors of first-class cricket, featuring for your country across all formats, experiencing franchise cricket, or now even dipping a toe in unconventional formats, it has been quite a journey—from cricket’s purest form to its strangest.

Joe Denly opened up about his upcoming challenge at the Hong Kong Sixes as he leads England, his experience while sharing the dressing room with Shubman Gill in the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL), his thoughts on the upcoming 2025-26 Ashes, and much more. Excerpts from Joe Denly’s exclusive interview with Sportskeeda:

### Q. For nearly everyone, Hong Kong Sixes represents memories of balls just flying out of the park, but is there more to it than just pure slogging? Especially for someone like you who has over 250 first-class games. Could this particular environment be any more different than what you are used to?

**Joe Denly:** I think that the basics of trying to hit sixes do not really change much, and I guess it is about trying to stake your pose at the moment, not looking too far ahead. If you do that, hopefully, that’s a good recipe for doing well.

### Q. You obviously have leadership experience across formats when it comes to conventional cricket. However, what are the different things that you need to keep in mind while leading in such an unorthodox form of cricket? Will you be channelling Bazball for the Hong Kong Sixes?

**Joe Denly:** It’s about trying to have fun, and that is the message I will be relaying to the team. You’re probably going to get hit for a few sixes, and that’s okay. You are coming up against good, quality players on quite a small ground. As a bowler, you have to really back yourself and try to stay in the moment.

As a batter, it’s about trying not to look too far ahead. If you do the basics pretty well, then you should be okay. Ultimately, it’s about keeping the lads relaxed and entertaining the crowd, which hopefully will be well supported.

### Q. You have several youngsters on your side, like Dan Mousley and James Coles, who are future prospects for England. How much do you think a good campaign at the Hong Kong Sixes will help them in their selection and international career, or is it completely irrelevant?

**Joe Denly:** The team that has been selected — the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) have certainly played a part in that. These are guys who are very highly thought of in England, kind of on the cusp of white-ball selection.

They were probably unlucky not to be involved with the England Lions this winter, so I am sure selectors will be keeping an eye on this competition and seeing how those guys perform. Hopefully, they can put in some really strong performances. You never know — you might even get a late call-up to some squad later this winter.

### Q. On your IPL debut, you opened with none other than Shubman Gill. Were there any early signs that he would reach where he is now? What were your observations about this prodigal player who was just looking to make his mark at the time?

**Joe Denly:** Shubman was certainly a young player with an abundance of talent. Very calm character, so it’s no surprise that he has gone on to achieve what he has.

He’s very highly thought of in India and around the world. He continues to impress, and that comes as no surprise. Unfortunately, I did open the batting with him, but I only lasted one ball, sadly, so I didn’t get a chance to build a partnership.

It’s great to see what he is achieving now — he’s going to be a superstar for many years.

### Q. Is there anything in particular that you fondly recall from that IPL season, given that you shared the dressing room with players like Rinku Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, and Prasidh Krishna, who are all part of the Indian squad now?

**Joe Denly:** It was an incredible couple of months in India—just to experience the IPL, the atmosphere, and the excitement wherever you travelled.

I shared the dressing room with some Indian stars who are still playing now. Very fond memories. I always enjoy keeping track of their progress; it’s great to see them perform on the world stage.

### Q. As one of the few active players who has played the game for over two decades, what are your thoughts on how the game has changed and where it is headed? How much has this rapid change affected your career?

**Joe Denly:** Nowadays, young players coming into the game are completely fearless. When I started, it was about scoring hundreds and batting for long periods.

Now, it has kind of flipped — you still look to score runs, of course, but also to entertain. There’s absolutely no fear of failure.

The shots people play now, all around the ground and 360 degrees, are incredible. I grew up trying to play straight down the ground with a high elbow and solid balance, but now guys even in Test cricket are flicking it over fine leg and reverse scooping — really taking the game on.

It makes for a great watch and a great brand of cricket. It’s not just England labelled with Bazball; teams have been playing like this for a long time. It’s great to see and great to watch. The game of cricket is just getting better and better.

### Q. We recently saw James Anderson extend his contract with Lancashire. Do you plan to extend your career as long as he has?

**Joe Denly:** Not sure. I turn 40 next year, so as long as I’m still enjoying it and having an impact on the field—performing and trying to win games for Kent—then who knows?

It also depends on staying fit. Red-ball cricket might not be my focus over the next few years; probably more T20 cricket and maybe a little coaching as well. I’m not sure I’ll be playing into my mid-40s like Jimmy Anderson, but you never know!

### Q. You have been in the thick of action when it comes to the Ashes. Do you believe this is England’s best shot in a long time? For several players this is their first time on Australian soil; what advice would you have for them?

**Joe Denly:** We certainly have a very good squad going out there. People say it’s our best chance in a long while—I remember playing in the 2019 Ashes series, and I never once thought we couldn’t win.

The teams have changed a lot since then, with quite a few new faces, but England definitely has a great chance.

This is an exciting team, brilliantly led by Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. There has been quite a lot of chatter, as you’d expect, with Australians critiquing the way we play—the Bazball style and everything.

It’s going to be a really intriguing series to watch, and I can’t wait for it to get started.

Joe Denly’s journey—from traditional cricket to embracing modern and unconventional formats—reflects the evolving nature of the game, while his leadership and experience continue to inspire the next generation of cricketers.

Broncos’ JL Skinner ‘ready for the moment’ with game-changing blocked punt vs. Raiders

JL Skinner’s facemask made embattled special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi look good and secured the Broncos an ugly but vital win.

Skinner burst through the line late in the third quarter and blocked AJ Cole’s punt with his helmet, setting up the Broncos for what ultimately became the game-winning field goal in a 10-7, hard-fought victory over the Raiders on Thursday at Empower Field.

It was perhaps the biggest play of the third-year pro’s career. In this game, Rizzi moved Skinner from the outside of the line to the inside to better capitalize on the 6-foot-4, 220-pounder’s length and physicality.

“That’s something I’ve been working on all week at practice—taking advantage of that tackle and trying to get off the ball fast,” Skinner said. “I was ready for the moment. I was thinking about that play all day.”

With 1:36 left in the third quarter and the Raiders facing a fourth-and-16 on their own 14-yard line in a tie game, Skinner lined up inside of Devon Key on the right side of the line. He dipped his shoulder and used a drive-and-crank technique to force his way into the backfield, then split two of the Raiders’ gunners, who were tied up with other blocks, to get to Cole.

Skinner missed the ball with his outstretched right arm as it left Cole’s foot but was close enough that the ball clanged off Skinner’s facemask and visor instead. The ball was then recovered by Tyler Badie, who ran it back to the 11-yard line, setting up Will Lutz’s 32-yard field goal four plays later.

“I didn’t know where the ball was at initially,” Skinner said. “I thought I missed it, and I was just hoping it hit something. After realizing it was blocked, I thought it hit my hand at first, then I saw my visor, and it had a mark from the ball on it. That’s when I knew.

“It was a heads-up play or, I’ll say, a head-butt play.”

On a night when the Broncos offense sputtered and Rizzi’s special teams had several face-palm moments, Skinner’s block was the bailout and the differentiator that underscored a dominating defensive performance.

Rookie punter Jeremy Crawshaw had a rough night with two shanked punts of 30 and 36 yards, along with a squib kick that made it seem like Crawshaw had a case of the yips. The erratic punting was the latest chapter in the Broncos’ ongoing special teams saga that came to a head over the last two weeks in wins over Dallas and Houston.

Rizzi’s unit had an array of errors in both games, including a communication mishap that preceded a concussion for All-Pro returner Marvin Mims Jr. against the Cowboys, as well as multiple players running out late on special teams during the game against the Texans.

But following Skinner’s momentum-changing block on Thursday and another game-winning field goal from kicker Will Lutz, defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers said the Broncos are choosing to see the unit’s performance through a glass-half-full lens.

For Skinner, a primary special teamer who has appeared in 26 NFL games with no starts and only a handful of plays at safety, he hopes Thursday’s highlight acts as a trampoline for him for the rest of the season.

“Special teams is one of those things that nobody wants to talk about until it’s something bad,” Franklin-Myers said. “But tonight, JL showed he’s a consistent player who plays with a physicality that people don’t want to match. He’s one of the engines that makes the special teams go.”

Linebacker Jonathon Cooper and defensive lineman Zach Allen, who helped Franklin-Myers contribute to the Broncos’ six sacks against the Raiders, agreed, even as Cooper acknowledged the unit has areas to clean up.

“(Special teams) made a big play in a big-time moment,” Allen said, “and that’s all we can ask for.”
