Former President Bill Clinton, 79, has sparked fresh health concerns following his disheveled appearance and struggles with communication during a high-profile event in New York City. RadarOnline.com reports that Clinton wore a Band-Aid on his nose and visibly shook as he turned the pages of his speech at The Headstrong Project’s Annual Gala on Wednesday, October 22. His speech also included at least one notably long pause that drew attention.
### A Bit Sad to Watch
The reason behind Clinton’s Band-Aid remains unclear, although it is noted he has previously undergone treatment for a pre-cancerous lesion on the same part of his nose. Witnesses at the event described his voice as low and halting, especially as he handed out an award to former Navy SEAL Frank Larkin, who once served on Clinton’s own security team.
A guest at the gala told The Daily Mail, “It was a bit sad to watch. The room went dead silent when he spoke because he had a low voice and was speaking slowly, so everyone wanted to hear what he had to say. He was admirable, and everyone stood up to clap before and after his speech.”
### Reflecting on a ‘Fitter’ Time
Before presenting the Moral Courage Award to Larkin, Clinton fondly recalled the days when he and his security detail used to run “25 miles a week.” He said,
> “Back before I was so ancient, I used to run about 20-25 miles a week when I was in the White House in my first term. Larkin would run with me. And as you’ll see, he’s now, and back then, a lot fitter than I did, but I still get out there and pound the pavement.”
He continued,
> “And I admired that he was a Navy SEAL. I admired that after he got out of the Navy, he went into the Secret Service and did a whole lot of other things that were important.”
Clinton also reflected on their younger days, describing them both as “young and pretty.”
It is worth noting that Frank Larkin’s son, Ryan—a former Navy SEAL—tragically died by suicide in 2017. Since then, Larkin has committed himself to fighting the stigma around seeking mental health support in honor of his late son.
### Clinton’s Recent Health Issues
Bill Clinton has faced multiple health challenges in recent years. In 2004, he suffered a heart attack that necessitated quadruple bypass surgery. More recently, he raised concerns after being seen with a defibrillator in August while leaving the Hamptons alongside his wife, Hillary Clinton, 77.
Last year, Clinton was hospitalized on December 23 at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., after developing a fever and was discharged on Christmas Eve after treatment for the flu. In 2021, he experienced another health scare when a urological infection spread to his bloodstream, leading to hospitalization.
Following his time in the White House, doctors revealed Clinton had nearly 100 percent blockage in some arteries when he underwent bypass surgery—he narrowly avoided a major heart attack.
In 2010, he again faced chest discomfort and was admitted to the same New York hospital where he had his quadruple bypass. During that stay, he underwent a stent insertion procedure, a common treatment to open blocked arteries.
