Nearly half of U.S. adults aren’t confident they could find a good job, while electricity and grocery costs are major sources of stress, poll says

High prices for groceries, housing, and health care continue to be a major concern for many American households. Rising electricity bills and the cost of gas at the pump are also sources of anxiety, according to a recent survey.

Some 47% of U.S. adults are “not very” or “not at all confident” they could find a good job if they wanted to—a significant increase from 37% when the question was last asked in October 2023. Electricity bills are a “major” source of stress for 36% of U.S. adults, especially at a time when the expected build-out of data centers for artificial intelligence could put additional strain on the power grid.

More than half of respondents said the cost of groceries is a “major” source of financial stress. About 4 in 10 reported that housing and health care costs are serious strains, and roughly one-third expressed high stress about gasoline prices.

### Political Implications: Trump’s Economic Challenges

The survey highlights ongoing economic vulnerabilities for former President Donald Trump, who returned to the White House in January promising to quickly tame the inflation surge that occurred during Democratic President Joe Biden’s term. Despite these claims, Trump’s popularity on economic issues remains low amid tariffs, federal worker layoffs, partisan conflicts, and a government shutdown.

Linda Weavil, 76, a retiree from Greensboro, North Carolina, voted for Trump last year because he “seems like a smart businessman.” However, she expressed concerns about his tariffs, citing increased prices for items like chocolate-covered pecans sold at her church group fundraiser. “I think he’s doing a great job on a lot of things, but I’m afraid our coffee and chocolate prices have gone up because of tariffs,” she said. “That’s a kick in the back of the American people.”

### Approval Ratings and Job Market Outlook

The poll found that 36% of U.S. adults approve of how Trump is handling the economy, a figure that has remained steady this year despite the economic uncertainty caused by tariffs. Among Republicans, 71% feel positive about his economic leadership, though this approval within his own party is relatively low—potentially problematic for upcoming races for governor in New Jersey and Virginia, as well as the 2026 midterm elections.

At a similar point in Biden’s term, an AP-NORC poll conducted in October 2021 found that 41% of U.S. adults approved of how he managed the economy, including about 73% of Democrats. This higher overall approval was largely due to independent voters, with 29% supporting Biden’s economic handling compared with 18% for Trump now.

Hiring was notably stronger during Biden’s presidency as the U.S. recovered from pandemic-related lockdowns. However, job gains have slowed significantly under Trump, averaging less than 27,000 per month after the April tariff announcements. This slowdown is reflected in public confidence: four years ago, 36% of survey respondents were “extremely” or “very” confident in their ability to secure a good job—now, that figure has dropped to 21%.

### Rising Electricity Costs: An Emerging Concern

Electricity costs have become an increasing worry. Trump’s decision to cancel funding for renewable energy projects and to impose tariffs on equipment necessary for factories and power plants has added to the financial burden. These increased costs come before the anticipated surge in electricity demand from new data centers built for artificial intelligence.

While 36% of Americans see electricity bills as a major concern, 40% identify costs as a “minor” stress, and 23% say their utility bills are “not a source” of stress at all.

Kevin Halsey, 58, from Normal, Illinois, shared his experience: his monthly electricity bill used to be $90 during summer months thanks to solar panels but has since soared to $300. A telecommunications worker and Democratic voter, Halsey describes the economy as “crap” and remains pessimistic. “I don’t see this as getting better,” he said.

### Public Skepticism Despite Economic Indicators

Both Trump and Biden face a similar economic dilemma. While indicators such as low unemployment, stock market gains, and steady economic growth suggest a solid economy, the public remains skeptical.

Some 68% of U.S. adults describe the economy as “poor,” with only 32% saying it’s “good,” reflecting a consistent sentiment over the past year. Regarding personal finances, 59% say their family finances are “holding steady,” but only 12% feel they are “getting ahead,” while 28% say they are “falling behind.”

### Economic Strains Across the Board

The widespread sense of economic uncertainty is fueled by multiple factors, signaling that middle-class stability may be increasingly out of reach for many Americans. The vast majority report at least “minor” stress related to groceries, health care, housing, taxes, wages, and gasoline costs.

Nearly half (47%) say they are “not very” or “not at all” confident they could pay an unexpected medical expense, and 52% have low confidence about having enough savings for retirement. Furthermore, 63% lack confidence in their ability to buy a new home.

Confidence in homebuying is especially low among young adults: about 80% of those under age 30 say they are “not very” or “not at all confident” they could purchase a house, compared with roughly 60% of adults aged 60 and older.

### Personal Stories Reflect Economic Reality

For 54% of U.S. adults, the cost of groceries is a major source of stress. Unique Hopkins, 36, from Youngstown, Ohio, now works two jobs after her teenage daughter had a baby. She describes herself as part of the “working poor,” barely able to get by. Hopkins voted for Trump in 2016 but switched allegiance to the Democrats, feeling that Trump’s ego prevented him from uniting the country and solving problems.

“It’s his way or no way,” she said. “Nobody is going to unite with Trump if it’s all about you, you, you.”

This survey underlines the deep economic concerns affecting American households today—ranging from job security and rising living costs to skepticism about political leadership—and highlights the challenges ahead for both parties.

Filming at the Speed of Light, About One Foot per Nanosecond

Brian Haidet recently showcased an incredible experiment on his AlphaPhoenix channel: a laser beam recorded at an astonishing 2 billion frames per second. Well, sort of. The trick? The video itself is only one pixel by one pixel. However, by repeating this tiny video over and over, Brian is able to build up a full rendering that reveals fascinating details about the laser’s motion.

For this project, Brian went back to the drawing board and completely rebuilt his entire apparatus from scratch. Just a few months earlier, in December of last year, he had already created a video camera capable of recording at 1,000,000,000 frames per second. To reach the new milestone of 2,000,000,000 frames per second — and achieve significantly improved resolution — Brian upgraded virtually every component. This included the motors, hardware, oscilloscope, signaling system, recording software, and processing software. Essentially, everything was revamped to push the boundaries of ultra-high-speed imaging.

One of the coolest effects produced by this new setup is how the laser light appears to travel noticeably faster when moving toward the camera than when moving away from it. This is actually an artifact of the experimental setup: laser beams reflecting off fog particles closer to the camera arrive sooner than those bouncing back from particles that are further away.

In other words, what you’re seeing is a real-world visualization of special relativity, all happening in Brian’s garage. It’s an impressive feat and a delightful demonstration of both physics and engineering coming together in a stunning way. Pretty cool!

LGBTQ+ health programs & newsrooms get shut down while gay issues take center stage in Virginia

**Trans Athlete Who Won Lawsuit Tried to End Case Due to Harassment, But Judge Won’t Let Her Stop**

The state of Idaho appealed a transgender college athlete’s court victory to the Supreme Court. The athlete herself tried to cancel the appeal to end the drawn-out legal process amid ongoing harassment. However, a judge ruled against her request, stating that it would be “fundamentally unfair” to the state of Idaho to allow the case to be settled without the Supreme Court hearing the appeal.

**Why It Matters:**
Lindsay Hecox’s case raises significant legal issues that the Supreme Court can now address. While the case is important for transgender rights, Hecox remains concerned for her own well-being amid the intense public scrutiny and harassment.

**Trump Administration Cancels LGBTQ+ Health Programs Amid Shutdown Blame**

The Trump administration recently fired employees in the Office of Population Affairs, a move that had been planned previously. This office is responsible for important informational campaigns about gender-affirming care and other LGBTQ+ health initiatives, including HIV prevention.

**Why It Matters:**
Those workers played a key role in preventing the spread of infectious diseases. A former leader at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned that these firings have put America at risk of disease outbreaks and attacks by nefarious actors. The comment, “People should be scared,” highlights the potential public health impact.

**Trans Rights Icon Miss Major Griffin-Gracey Passes Away at 78**

Friends and community members remember Miss Major Griffin-Gracey as a resilient activist dedicated to creating safe spaces for Black transgender communities and all trans people.

**What People Said:**
“Her enduring legacy is a testament to her resilience, activism, and dedication. We are eternally grateful for Miss Major’s life, contributions, and how deeply she cared for those she loved.”

**Why It Matters:**
Miss Major was a lifelong leader and advocate whose loss will be deeply felt. Her life and work will continue to inspire future generations of activists.

**Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Criticizes Opponent’s Anti-LGBTQ+ Stance**

Abigail Spanberger, running for governor of Virginia, released a new ad attacking her GOP opponent, Winsome Earle-Sears, for opposing marriage equality and employment protections for LGBTQ+ people.

**Why It Matters:**
Spanberger herself has faced attacks throughout her campaign for supporting the rights of transgender youth in sports. Her ad targeting Earle-Sears’ opposition to LGBTQ+ rights may signal a new strategy by Democrats heading into the 2026 elections.

**NBC News Lays Off Reporting Teams Focused on Minority Communities**

NBC News has laid off staff from several of its minority-focused verticals, including NBC BLK, NBC Latino, NBC Asian America, and NBC Out, which specifically covered LGBTQ+ issues.

**Why It Matters:**
Throughout the 2010s and early 2020s, corporate media invested significantly in reporting on LGBTQ+ communities. NBC Out, in particular, was known for in-depth coverage. These recent layoffs suggest a potential retreat from such dedicated programming.

Column U.S.-Israel Relations ’60 Minutes’ of misplaced schadenfreude Never mind the nonsense. What’s important is that Trump hasn’t wavered from his backing of Israel and tough stance against Hamas. Ruthie Blum

Stahl went on to say she’d heard that Trump “was furious.” Kushner responded, “I think he felt like the Israelis were getting a little bit out of control in what they were doing, and that it was time to be very strong and stop them from doing things that he felt were not in their long-term interests.”

Stahl remarked, “People should understand that [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu, the Israelis, bombed the peacemakers. Bombed the negotiating team.” Really? People should understand that? Rather than call out this outrageous assertion and outright lie—since the strike was aimed specifically at Hamas leaders supported, funded and coddled by those very “negotiators”—Witkoff, nodding, took it a step further.

“By the way, Lesley, it had a metastasizing effect, because the Qataris were critical to the negotiation, as were the Egyptians and the Turks. And we had lost the confidence of the Qataris. And, so, Hamas went underground, and it was very, very difficult to get to them,” he said.

Talk about a jaw-dropping distortion. After all, if the Egyptians, Turks and Qataris hadn’t been against Israel throughout the war, the hostages would have been home a lot sooner.

Furthermore, Hamas “went underground” after the attack due to the realization that Israel meant business about hunting down its leaders and members wherever they may take refuge. They hadn’t been on the verge of capitulation at that point. On the contrary, they played their cards as though they had the upper hand. And, as long as they were holding and torturing dozens of innocent captives, they continued to call the shots.

The strike in Doha, coupled with the surrounding of Gaza City—Hamas’s last untouched stronghold in the Strip—shifted all that. The former caused Qatar to beg for American guarantees for protection, which it received; the latter led the “negotiators” finally to apply pressure on Hamas.

Just look at the timeline: The attack in question took place on Sept. 9; the reaching of a deal was announced on Oct. 8; and every living hostage was back home on Oct. 13.

Nevertheless, Witkoff joined Stahl in highlighting the opposite.

Now, it’s true that this exchange was part of a much longer interview. It’s also clear that it was chosen by CBS as a promo certain to garner global attention and clicks. Until the entire show is broadcast, viewers don’t know whether Witkoff and Kushner clarified their points in a direction more favorable to Netanyahu, whom Witkoff lauded last Saturday night at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv.

“I was in the trenches with the prime minister,” he told the Israelis who booed when he mentioned Netanyahu. “Believe me,” Witkoff assured, “he was a very important part here. The prime minister and his staff, [Strategic Affairs Minister] Ron Dermer included, have both sacrificed so much for this country and devoted their lives to the service of Israel. Their dedication to the history and destiny of this nation stands out tonight. They’ve given everything: their time, their energy and their hearts to building a safer, stronger future for the Jewish people. Their commitment to this country has never wavered and it never will. We thank you. The president thanks you.”

That was nothing compared to the lengthy love-letter of a speech that Trump delivered at the Knesset the following day—as the remaining 20 live hostages were returning to Israel, and just before he flew to Sharm el-Sheikh to meet with Arab, Muslim and other world leaders rushing to get on America’s good side.

“I want to express my gratitude to a man of exceptional courage and patriotism, whose partnership did so much to make this momentous day possible,” Trump said. “You know who I’m talking about. There’s only one, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He’s not the easiest guy to deal with, but that’s what makes him great. That’s what makes him great. Thank you very much, Bibi. Great job.”

In this context, the comments by Witkoff and Kushner to Stahl made no sense. Unless, of course, they were integral to Trump’s agenda to expand the Abraham Accords with potential partners whose antipathy to Israel equals, if not surpasses, their desire for a protective umbrella and other goodies from Washington.

This is worse than unfortunate, not least because of the message it conveys to the “anybody but Bibi” demonstrators. These are the liars who continue to accuse Netanyahu of prolonging the war for his personal political benefit. Oh, and who insist that his arm was twisted into agreeing to Trump’s plan.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid gave gleeful voice to the slander. In a post on X on Saturday, he wrote, “The interview of Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on ‘60 Minutes’ is an earthquake. For the first time, it was said openly: After the failed attack in Doha, Trump thought that Netanyahu had lost control and forced him into an agreement that Netanyahu didn’t want.”

Never mind the nonsense. What’s important is that Trump hasn’t wavered from his backing of Israel and tough stance against Hamas. He’s been persistent in the demand that Hamas return all the remaining bodies of murdered hostages and relinquish its weapons. Naturally, neither condition for proceeding with the deal has been met.

All that matters now is how he reacts to emerging reports of renewed Israel Defense Forces airstrikes in Rafah, after Hamas terrorists fired an anti-tank missile at IDF engineering vehicles. It’s hard to imagine that he won’t stand behind such actions.

We can’t say the same for the likes of Lapid and his ilk, however. They’re too busy basking in “60 Minutes” of misplaced schadenfreude.
http://www.ruthfullyyours.com/2025/10/19/column-u-s-israel-relations-60-minutes-of-misplaced-schadenfreude-never-mind-the-nonsense-whats-important-is-that-trump-hasnt-wavered-from-his-backing-of-israel-a/
