Timberwolves hang on to beat depleted Pacers 114-110, after Edwards exits early with tight hamstring

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Julius Randle scored 20 of his 31 points in the first half, and Rudy Gobert contributed 14 points and 19 rebounds to help the Minnesota Timberwolves hold on and defeat the depleted Indiana Pacers 114-110 on Sunday night.

The game took a hit for Minnesota early when star Anthony Edwards exited with hamstring tightness just 3:08 into the game. Despite his absence, the Timberwolves managed to maintain control. Donte DiVincenzo stepped up with 17 points to stabilize the Pacers’ backcourt, while Naz Reid added a strong performance with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

For Indiana, Pascal Siakam led the charge with 33 points. He hit a crucial 3-pointer with 42 seconds left to narrow the deficit to 110-108. However, Jaden McDaniels responded with a finger-roll basket to extend Minnesota’s lead to four with 20 seconds remaining, securing the win for the Timberwolves. Aaron Nesmith also contributed 18 points for the Pacers.

The Pacers are facing significant challenges this season. They are without Tyrese Haliburton, who is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon that ended his NBA Finals run, and they lost current leading scorer Bennedict Mathurin to a sprained toe the previous night in Memphis. Additionally, Andrew Nembhard, the primary point guard during Haliburton’s absence, missed his second straight game with a shoulder strain. In total, seven players were unavailable, forcing Indiana to deploy a starting lineup featuring journeyman Jay Huff, little-used big man Isaiah Jackson, and young guard Ben Sheppard.

The home opener in Minnesota carried extra excitement with the introduction of stage-style lighting on the court and the return of the all-black uniforms with pine-tree trim, reminiscent of the Kevin Garnett era. Nevertheless, the early loss of Edwards tempered the energy. The Timberwolves took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Pacers 28-17 and drawing 11 fouls while committing only three.

With the win, Minnesota improves to 2-1, while Indiana falls to 0-3 after their opener was a double-overtime loss to the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.

Looking ahead, Indiana will play at Dallas on Wednesday, and Minnesota will host Denver on Monday.

Two Australian players inappropriately touched by motorcyclist in India at Women’s Cricket World Cup

INDORE, India (AP) — Two cricketers from the Australian women’s national team were inappropriately touched by a motorcyclist in the central Indian city of Indore, where they were participating in the Women’s Cricket World Cup.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning as the two players were walking from their team hotel to a café, Cricket Australia confirmed on Saturday.

“CA can confirm two members of the Australian women’s team were approached and touched inappropriately by a motorcyclist while walking to a café in Indore. The matter was reported by team security to police, who are handling the matter,” the organization said in an official statement.

Authorities acted quickly, and a man with a long criminal record was arrested within six hours of the incident, said Rajesh Dandotiya, the additional district commissioner of police in Indore. The suspect’s full name was not released.

Australia played two matches this week at Holkar Stadium in Indore: against England on Wednesday and South Africa on Saturday. The stadium is managed by the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA), which expressed being “deeply pained and shocked” by the incident.

“No woman should ever have to endure such trauma, and our thoughts and support are with those impacted by this distressing incident,” the MPCA said in a statement.

The association added, “This unfortunate event has deeply affected everyone from MPCA who cherishes the values of respect, safety, and dignity of women.”

Noting Indore’s reputation, the MPCA stated, “The city of Indore has earned a proud reputation as a safe venue for the visiting teams.”

The statement continued: “It is deeply painful that the disorderly action of one individual has caused such harm and cast a shadow over the city’s image. As the host, MPCA extends sincere apologies to the Australian women’s team for this deeply distressing and unfortunate incident while in our city known for safety, grace, and hospitality.”

City of Miami unveils mural honoring children of the Pedro Pan Program and hero Cuban general

MIAMI (WSVN) — A new mural has been unveiled in the City of Miami to honor a significant chapter in South Florida’s history.

The artwork pays tribute to more than 14,000 children who participated in the Pedro Pan Program. During the 1960s, these children were sent from Cuba to the United States by their families in an effort to escape the Castro regime.

In addition to honoring the Pedro Pan children, the mural also celebrates General Antonio Maceo, known as “The Bronze Titan.” Maceo was a hero who fought for Cuba’s independence against Spain in the 1800s.

This meaningful display is located at the intersection of Southwest 13th Avenue and 10th Street, where visitors can view and reflect on this important piece of history.

Coroner says a 7th person has died from injuries in Mississippi Delta town mass shooting

LELAND, Miss. (AP) — A seventh person has died from injuries sustained in a mass shooting following a high school football homecoming game earlier this month in the Mississippi Delta town of Leland, according to local officials.

Washington County coroner LaQuesha Watkins announced Saturday that her office was informed by the Hinds County coroner’s office on Friday about the death of 25-year-old Ebanee Williams.

In connection with the shooting, which occurred around midnight on October 11, nine people have been arrested. Several of those arrested face capital murder charges. The incident also left more than a dozen individuals injured.

The FBI’s Jackson Field Office has been actively posting pictures of suspects wanted for questioning in relation to the mass shooting.

The shooting took place as people were celebrating homecoming weekend in downtown Leland, shortly after the football game.

Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the shooting. However, the FBI indicated that the gunfire appears to have been “sparked by a disagreement among several individuals.”
