Republicans revive bid to require proof of citizenship for mail-in voter registration

Republicans revive bid to require proof of citizenship for mail-in voter registration Washington Examiner ^ | November 18, 2025 12: 00 pm | Ramsey Touchberry Posted on by E. Pluribus Unum EXCLUSIVE Republicans in Congress are renewing a push to combat noncitizen voting in federal elections, directing their attention to the registration forms used to vote by mail. The Citizen Ballot Protection Act, spearheaded by Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) and Rep. Gary Palmer (R-AL), would codify states’ ability to require proof of citizenship on mail voting applications. The legislation, introduced Tuesday, was offered during the previous Congress but failed to gain traction under Democratic leadership and then-President Joe Biden. “Voting in our country is a sacred right that must solely be limited to American citizens,” Britt said in a statement. “To allow states to uphold this principle should be simple commonsense.” The proposal would amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, which says voter registration forms submitted by mail may not include “any requirement for notarization or other formal authentication” and is intended to empower states to enact citizenship requirements for mailed applications. The current requirement includes attesting on the form, under penalty of perjury, that the applicant is an American citizen. The Supreme Court in 2013 struck down an Arizona law requiring proof of citizenship when registering to vote, concluding that states could not create new requirements for federal elections under the NVRA. FBI informant jailed for Biden bribe claim released on medical furlough: lawyer

The FBI informant who sparked controversy by alleging that Joe and Hunter Biden took $10 million in bribes has been released from prison on medical furlough, his attorney told The Post.

Alexander Smirnov pleaded guilty in December and received a six-year prison sentence for fabricating the story about the then-US president, as well as a separate charge of tax evasion.

“Since Mr. Smirnov’s arrest, he has required crucial eye surgery which was denied to him for an extended period of time, which only exacerbated an already serious condition,” his lawyer David Chesnoff said. “We appreciate the Bureau of Prisons recognizing the incredibly serious nature of his condition and agreeing to allow him to receive the necessary and lengthy procedures he is receiving.”

Smirnov, 45, had been incarcerated at a federal facility in Los Angeles. Chesnoff did not share his precise release date.

A federal judge refused to free Smirnov in May, citing flight risk concerns, despite his legal team’s claims that he is now legally blind.

Smirnov’s tip about the Bidens involved the Ukraine-based energy company Burisma, which paid Hunter Biden a salary of up to $1 million to serve on its board. This occurred while Joe Biden, then Vice President, led the Obama administration’s policy toward Kyiv.

The allegation, brought to light by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), ultimately undermined the House Republican case to impeach then-President Biden for his numerous documented interactions with his son Hunter and brother James Biden’s foreign patrons in countries including China, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine.

Health-related releases from prison typically last 30 days but can be extended. Lawyers for Smirnov intend to continue seeking medical furloughs.

Former VP Kamala Harris leaves door open for 2028 presidential run, according to new interview

WASHINGTON — Kamala Harris isn’t ruling out another run for the White House.

In an interview with the BBC posted Saturday, Harris said she expects a woman will be president in the coming years, and it could “possibly” be her. “I am not done,” she said.

The former vice president revealed that she hasn’t decided whether to mount a 2028 presidential campaign but dismissed the suggestion that she’d face long odds.

“I have lived my entire career a life of service and it’s in my bones. And there are many ways to serve,” she said. “I’ve never listened to polls.”

Harris has recently given a series of interviews following the September release of her book, *107 Days*. The book looks back on her experience replacing then-President Joe Biden as the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee after he dropped out of the race. She ultimately lost to Republican President Donald Trump.

In an interview with The Associated Press last week, Harris, 61, also made clear that running again in 2028 is still on the table. She said she sees herself as a leader of the party, including in pushing back against Trump and preparing for the 2026 midterms.

Asked in an Oct. 17 interview with AP whether she had plans for a 2028 bid, Harris said, “I haven’t decided. Sincerely. I have not decided. I may or I may not. I have not decided.”

When asked specifically whether she still wanted to do the job itself, she used the past tense, saying, “It’s a job I wanted to do.” However, she noted that the only way to achieve it is “to run” and win.

Meanwhile, political jockeying among Democrats for the 2028 presidential contest appears to be playing out even earlier than usual. Several potential candidates are already taking steps to get to know voters in key states, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom, term-limited Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, and California Rep. Ro Khanna.

Upward of 30 high-profile Democrats could ultimately enter the primary.
