Federal Reserve Chair Powell says DOJ has subpoenaed central bank, threatens criminal indictment

By CHRISTOPHER RUGABER, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Sunday that the Department of Justice has served the central bank with subpoenas and threatened it with a criminal indictment over his testimony about the Fed’s building renovations.

The move represents an unprecedented escalation in President Donald Trump’s battle with the Fed, an independent agency he has repeatedly attacked for not cutting its key interest rate as quickly as he prefers.

The subpoena relates to Powell’s testimony before the Senate Banking Committee in June regarding the Fed’s $2.5 billion renovation of two office buildings — a project that Trump criticized as excessive this summer.

In a video statement, Powell said the threat of criminal charges is a “pretext” to undermine the Fed’s independence when it comes to setting interest rates.

“This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions — or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation,” Powell said.

The Justice Department, in a statement Sunday, said it could not comment on any particular case but added that Attorney General Pam Bondi “has instructed her US Attorneys to prioritize investigating any abuse of taxpayer dollars.”

A spokesperson for U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office did not immediately respond Sunday to requests for comment.

The potential indictment has already drawn concern from one Republican senator, who said he will oppose any future nominee to the central bank — including any replacement for Powell — until “this legal matter is fully resolved.”

“If there were any remaining doubt whether advisers within the Trump Administration are actively pushing to end the independence of the Federal Reserve, there should now be none,” said North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis, who sits on the Banking Committee, which oversees Fed nominations. “It is now the independence and credibility of the Department of Justice that are in question.”

Associated Press writers Seung Min Kim, Eric Tucker, and Alanna Durkin Richer contributed to this report.

3 Prime Video documentaries you’ll actually watch this weekend (January 9 – 4)

American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans

As a diehard Formula 1 fan, I’ve never been into watching NASCAR cars just (mostly) turn left. I know, I know, there’s more to it than that, but when I came across this bonkers feature sports documentary about the team that transformed a NASCAR into a vehicle that could survive the grueling and legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race, I was in.

American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans tells the true story of “Garage 56” and their breakneck 18-month mission to build and modify a stock Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to compete with the high-performing and finely engineered machines of the legendary European race.

Spearheaded by NASCAR CEO Jim France and the top-tier Hendrick Motorsports NASCAR team, the 97-minute documentary talks to all the key players and goes behind the scenes to show how they built, tested, and troubleshooted the car to achieve their dream.

Oh, then there’s the drivers. The 24-hour endurance race requires three drivers, and Garage 56 features some of the best to do it — seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, 2009 Formula 1 champion Jenson Button, and 2010 Le Mans winner Mike Rockenfeller, who all share their experience in the film.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a motorsports fan or not; American Thunder is a brilliant and exciting underdog story of how the team somehow fit this square peg into a round hole to run their car over 285 laps straight.

Cirque du Soleil: Without a Net

I saw Cirque du Soleil’s incredible flagship show O in Las Vegas many years ago, and I can honestly say that it is without a doubt the most incredible stage show I have ever seen.

It’s a surreal aquatic spectacle that takes place above, on, and in an enormous 25-foot-deep, 1.5-million-gallon pool in the Bellagio. The show features acrobats, swimmers, high-divers, aerialists, and more, as they fluidly move in and around the set.

Yep, it’s a true spectacle — and it almost went away forever.

Cirque du Soleil: Without a Net tells the true comeback story of the legendary show after it was shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, putting the careers and livelihoods of hundreds of employees at risk.

Sure, the 95-minute documentary is a bit of a promo for the show (who can blame them?), but it offers unprecedented access behind the scenes, with candid and emotional interviews with some of its performers, both in their homes and on set, as they cope with the uncertainty of the show and their futures.

The rehearsal and stage footage alone are worth the watch — I’d always wondered about the incredible feats of engineering involved in the production, as well as the technical precision required for it to be safe and run smoothly.

Without a Net more than delivers, as the crew and team work swiftly towards bringing the show back at the tail end of the pandemic. It truly is a unique look at the blood, sweat, and tears (and lots of water) that go into a world-class production.

Final Thoughts

If you’re on the lookout for something enlightening this weekend, these documentary picks are all easy to watch, offering laughs, some high-speed thrills, and a true spectacle in the making.

Hopefully, one of these Prime Video docs will scratch whatever weekend itch you have.

Indiana football makes historic Curt Cignetti flex after huge honor

The Indiana Hoosiers football program continues to redefine what is possible for a team once defined by limitations. From a national afterthought to college football’s elite, the Hoosiers’ rise to prominence reached another defining moment this week as long-term belief, disciplined leadership, and sustained excellence were rewarded on a national stage.

Indiana capped a perfect season with a 13-0 campaign, capturing the Big Ten title and securing the No. 1 overall seed in the College Football Playoff. This remarkable achievement was further highlighted as Curt Cignetti earned Associated Press Coach of the Year honors for the second straight year, cementing his and Indiana’s place in program history.

The Hoosiers celebrated this unprecedented accomplishment publicly on social media. The program’s official account on X (formerly known as Twitter) shared a message applauding the milestone and spotlighting Cignetti’s impact:
“The first ever back-to-back AP Coach of the Year, @CCignettiIU.”

Under Cignetti’s leadership, Indiana has rapidly transformed from a rebuilding team to the nation’s top-ranked squad. This turnaround has been marked by victories over traditional powerhouses and a comprehensive cultural reset within the program.

In an article published on ESPN and written by the Associated Press, Cignetti reflected on this milestone and the journey ahead. Prior to last week’s Big Ten Championship Game, he acknowledged that Indiana was still striving to close the gap with Ohio State in both recruiting and on the field. The Hoosiers’ 13-10 victory over the Buckeyes in that championship marked another defining step toward that goal.

“It’s another step we need to take as a program,” Cignetti said after the game. “It’s a great win, obviously. And we’re going to go in the playoffs as the No. 1 seed. And a lot of people probably thought that wasn’t possible. But when you get the right people and you have a plan and they love one another and play for one another and they commit, anything’s possible.”

‘I’m Going To Fight Until My Last Breath’: Eric Dane Confronts ALS In Powerful New TV Role

Eric Dane is returning to television in a role that mirrors his real-life battle, bringing the reality of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to the small screen with unprecedented honesty. The 53-year-old actor, known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan, or ‘McSteamy,’ on Grey’s Anatomy, joins the cast of NBC’s medical drama Brilliant Minds as a firefighter facing the same condition he revealed he had been diagnosed with in April. The episode, set to air in late November, marks Dane’s first appearance in the second season of the series. A Role That Reflects Reality Dane portrays Matthew, a firefighter who struggles with an ALS diagnosis while maintaining his role as a protector at home and at the firehouse. According to Johns Hopkins, ALS causes progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain, and currently there is no cure. Matthew has not shared the diagnosis with his ex-wife or daughter, fearing it would burden them, and he resists using a BiPAP machine to assist his breathing, stating, ‘Fine, the guys at the station, they got me. But that’s it. I’m not having them deal with strapping me in and out of a machine at night. I got to draw the line.’ When Dr. Oliver Wolf, played by series lead Zachary Quinto, informs Matthew that his disease is progressing faster than expected, the character struggles with accepting help. Dane’s performance brings to life the complex emotions of someone facing a terminal illness while trying to maintain normalcy. ‘What’s it matter?’ Matthew asks his doctor in one scene. ‘Nobody survives this. We both know that, and I know how to take care of my family.’ Collaboration Behind The Scenes Michael Grassi, creator of Brilliant Minds, said he jumped at the opportunity to work with Dane when his team reached out. At the time, Grassi was managing a family health emergency, and he and Dane discussed how families navigate serious diagnoses in real life. ‘And there’s no rule book. There’s no right way or wrong way to do it. And in our conversations, something that he was dealing with very much in real time, and I was dealing with in my life, and a lot of people deal with every day is, how do you navigate, how do you communicate and how do you accept help?’ Grassi told USA TODAY. Dane’s presence on set was described as ‘a joy’ by Grassi. The actor would often arrive and say, ‘Give me a hug.’ Scenes were reportedly full of laughter and camaraderie, providing moments of relief amid the emotionally heavy subject matter. One particular scene, where Matthew records a message about asking for help, moved the cast to their feet. Grassi described it as a ten-minute standing ovation, calling Dane’s performance ‘beautiful and so honest and so real.’ Raising Awareness Through Storytelling.

63K Bitcoin Exits Long-Term Wallets: A Surge of Speculative Short-Term Buying

Bitcoin is struggling to reclaim momentum as it trades below the critical $90,000 level, with selling pressure dominating the market and fear spreading rapidly. Many analysts are leaning toward calling the start of a new bear market, arguing that Bitcoin likely topped in early October near $126,000. Momentum has weakened sharply since then, and investor behavior now reflects a shift toward risk-off positioning. This unprecedented transfer is clearly visible in the Long-Term Holder Net Position Change chart, which shows a massive red bar a negative daily difference signaling heavy outflows from long-term holder wallets. This type of behavior typically appears during late-stage bull markets or near local and cycle tops, when long-time investors with substantial profit margins begin realizing gains. At the same time, the corresponding Short-Term Holder Net Position Change chart shows a huge green bar, confirming that newer, more reactive market participants are buying these coins, often at elevated prices. Long-Term Holders Distribute as Short-Term Buyers Absorb Supply CryptoOnchain explains that the current market structure is being shaped by a clear divergence in behavior between Long-Term Holders (LTHs) and Short-Term Holders (STHs). LTHs historically considered the “strong hands” of the market are now heavily distributing, sending large amounts of Bitcoin into the market after months or even years of holding. At the same time, STHs are aggressively buying and accumulating this supply, often entering positions at elevated prices despite growing volatility. This dynamic is not inherently a bearish signal on its own. In fact, such transitions are common during late-stage bull markets, where early investors secure profits while new participants enter the market with fresh capital. It reflects a natural rotation of supply from experienced holders to newer ones, a pattern seen repeatedly in previous cycles. However, the volume of distribution is significant, and it raises an important risk: if incoming demand fails to fully absorb the coins being offloaded by LTHs, the market could face a deeper correction or extended consolidation phase. This supply pressure can weigh on price, especially in a context where sentiment is fragile and macro conditions remain uncertain. Weekly Chart Signals a Critical Retest of Macro Support Bitcoin is attempting to stabilize around the $87,000 level after an intense multi-week sell-off that dragged price as low as $85,946. On the weekly chart, Bitcoin has now tapped the 100-week moving average (green line), a historically important support level during bull-market retracements. This line acted as a springboard in previous cycles, but the current bounce remains weak and indecisive, reflecting the fear dominating the market. Momentum has clearly shifted bearish. The breakdown from the $110K-$100K consolidation zone triggered accelerated selling, confirming a loss of market structure on the weekly timeframe. Candles over the past three weeks show high-volume distribution, with sellers overwhelming demand each time Bitcoin attempted to reclaim higher levels. The steep slope of the 50-week MA turning slightly down is another sign that trend strength has softened. However, the reaction at the 100-week MA is critical. Bulls aggressively defended this area in prior macro corrections, and holding above $83K-$86K keeps the long-term bull structure intact. A weekly close below this zone, however, opens the door to deeper downside toward the 200-week MA near $56K-$60K. Featured image from ChatGPT, chart from TradingView. com.

Pro-Life, Anti-Death Penalty

National support for the death penalty is at an all-time low, with younger adults from both major political parties increasingly opposing capital punishment. Yet in Texas’ execution chamber, the pace of lethal injections continues unabated. This persistence comes even as some condemned Texans—including Melissa Lucio and Robert Roberson—have had their high-profile executions halted with only days or hours to spare.

Recent outcry against the state’s death penalty has emerged from both sides of the political aisle. On the day of Roberson’s scheduled execution last year, a bipartisan group of legislators made the unprecedented move to subpoena him for a public hearing scheduled after he was supposed to have died. This successful effort helped forestall the execution so courts could review his claims of innocence. (On October 9 this year, Roberson’s execution was stayed by the state’s top criminal court, a week before his scheduled death.)

Nan Tolson, former chief spokesperson for Governor Greg Abbott, now leads the Texas chapter of the national network Conservatives Concerned About the Death Penalty. She sees the punishment as rife with problems—from political and faith perspectives to its ineffectiveness as a public safety tool.

Since founding Texas’ Lone Star State affiliate in 2023 as part of the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, Tolson and her organization have engaged with thousands of Republicans statewide. She describes creating a “safe space for conservatives to talk to like-minded people about the death penalty,” which has brought hundreds into the movement against capital punishment.

Tolson, 30, was recognized in 2024 with a “40 Under 40” fellowship by the Texas Federation of Republican Women for her activism. In mid-September, the Texas Observer spoke with her about the conservative argument against the death penalty, how Texas’ top Republicans think about the issue, and the powerful idea of redemption.

**Texas Observer (TO): You’re a notable young voice in Texas conservatism. Have you gotten pushback from other Republicans for your views on the death penalty?**

**Nan Tolson (NT):** I would say so. There’s pushback on all sides when it comes to the death penalty, which is something I was prepared for. It’s a controversial and emotional topic. But I’ve actually received more positive reception and curiosity from Republicans than opposition. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the number of people who are genuinely interested in what we’re doing and want to learn more, even if they don’t fully agree. The death penalty is an issue many people across political parties are on the fence about.

**TO: What made you realize you were firmly against it?**

**NT:** When I was a freshman at Baylor, we had a guest speaker named Shane Claiborne who came to chapel one morning and essentially laid out an elevator pitch on why Christians should oppose the death penalty. I had never heard that argument before. It totally changed my mind in that moment.

**TO: Have you noticed any change when high-profile cases like Melissa Lucio’s and Robert Roberson’s are in the news?**

**NT:** Definitely. We’ve seen a large number of Republicans supporting Robert Roberson. The Texas Young Republicans Federation signed onto a letter asking for a new trial. There are very prominent Republicans in the Legislature who support him. And when we speak to different conservative groups across Texas, often before we even mention his case, people ask, “What’s the status with Robert Roberson’s case? I can’t believe this is happening. This has made me question the death penalty.”

**TO: Would you say the execution of innocent people is a significant problem in Texas?**

**NT:** Absolutely. When we talk to conservatives who oppose or question the death penalty, the most common concern is wrongful executions. The data backs this up—there is strong evidence that Texas has executed at least seven innocent people. As conservatives, we recognize that the government will not get it right every time.

**TO: Why do you think opposition to the death penalty can be bipartisan, especially given the political divides on many criminal justice issues?**

**NT:** The death penalty is extremely fiscally irresponsible. It costs more to sentence someone to death and carry out the execution than to sentence them to life in prison without parole. It’s also an ineffective deterrent to violent crime—the evidence is inconclusive at best regarding whether it prevents homicides.

There’s also a strong pro-life argument. As a society, we can keep people safe while honoring the inherent dignity and worth of every life, including those on death row who have committed unspeakable acts.

**TO: Are there cases of Texans who have been executed, exonerated, or remain on death row that you think more people should know about?**

**NT:** Two come to mind that I’ve worked on over the last couple of years. One is Ramiro Gonzales. He was 100% guilty of the crime he committed as essentially a teenager and was on death row for several years. He was executed last year, but the person Texas executed was not the same person who committed the crime, because Gonzales had changed.

This is something we often see—people who commit crimes at a young age come into prison broken and messed up. But with structure, resources, and time, many transform. They express genuine remorse, apologize to victims’ families, and often embrace faith. It’s hard to see the State of Texas provide those tools but still say, “Your life is expendable; we’re going to execute you anyway.”

Another man, Ivan Cantu, executed last year out of the Dallas area, is believed by some to have been wrongfully executed.

**TO: You’ve worked at the Capitol with some of Texas’s highest-level Republicans. What did you learn about how the Republican Party thinks about these issues?**

**NT:** Republicans and conservatives, especially in Texas, pride themselves on being tough on crime. But we need to be willing to think outside the box, recognize what works, and acknowledge what doesn’t.

What stood out to me is the nuance in political beliefs—there is no single way to be a Republican or a conservative. That’s something positive that should be encouraged. Half of our work is showing conservatives that opposing the death penalty doesn’t mean you’re not a Republican or a conservative, or that you’re betraying your values. It means you’ve critically thought about an important issue and realized it doesn’t align with your principles.

**TO: Most Republicans nationwide support the death penalty, and former President Donald Trump has publicly pushed prosecutors to seek it. Do you feel like you’re fighting an uphill battle?**

**NT:** I do think it’s an uphill battle, but it’s not impossible. We’re not going to end the death penalty overnight—that’s never been the goal, nor would it be realistic. But educating conservatives and giving them a space to question the death penalty is realistic and impactful.

We don’t come out saying, “You’re wrong, and we need to end it tomorrow.” We approach this strategically, with empathy and understanding. There are victims of horrible crimes, and it’s natural to want justice or even revenge. We embrace that, but also recognize that the death penalty is not the right way to seek justice in a practical sense.

NCAA bans six men’s basketball players for gambling

The era of legalized, normalized, and heavily monetized sports gambling is not unfolding as smoothly as its proponents would have us believe. While those profiting from it claim that legalization allows for safeguards to be implemented, the reality is more complex. Making sports betting legal also makes it widely and easily accessible to millions who otherwise wouldn’t seek out a bookie. The stigma surrounding sports gambling has been stripped away, making it as normal and acceptable as buying a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of alcohol.

Legalized sports betting introduces unprecedented temptations and justifications for individuals who might be inclined to try and make some easy money. Unfortunately, more and more people are realizing that “easy money” often comes with a steep price.

Recently, the NCAA has taken action against six men’s college basketball players from three schools—New Orleans, Mississippi Valley State, and Arizona State—for gambling violations. Interestingly, none of these players are currently attending the schools where the violations occurred. According to reports, these players allegedly lost or attempted to lose games by more points than the spread as part of a conspiracy with gamblers.

In a separate investigation, the NCAA uncovered that Donovan Sanders and Alvin Stredic were offered money to throw a January 2025 Mississippi Valley State game against Alabama A&M. Sanders was also overheard discussing plans to throw a December 2024 game against Tulsa.

Additionally, former Arizona State forward B.J. Freeman reportedly shared inside information with a former teammate, who used that intel to place bets on Freeman’s performance in a daily fantasy sports contest.

ESPN had previously reported on an NBA gambling ring that placed “suspicious bets” on men’s college basketball games, including contests involving Mississippi Valley State. Some of the same betting accounts also placed large wagers on prop bets related to former NBA player Jontay Porter—who has since been banned for life—and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, who is currently under indictment in a prop-bet scheme.

The NCAA deserves credit for thoroughly investigating these violations and publicly disclosing their findings. In contrast, sports leagues often prefer to sweep scandals under the rug, as acknowledging internal corruption tends to invite external scrutiny that can damage the league’s reputation.

As sports gambling continues to grow in scale and influence, it is clear that the challenges surrounding integrity and fair play remain significant—and far from resolved.

Lithuania shuts down its two largest airports, border with Belarus — after balloons carrying this violate airspace

Holy smokes! Lithuania has closed its two largest airports and the border with Belarus after at least one helium weather balloon smuggling cigarettes violated controlled airspace.

Vilnius and Kaunas airports were shut down until 2 a.m. Saturday morning after balloons carrying contraband cigarettes were spotted by Lithuanian authorities late Friday night. Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Center reported detecting “tens of balloons” on its radar Friday, according to Reuters.

The nation’s border with Belarus will remain closed until Sunday, with Lithuanian leadership placing blame on Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, who has not stopped the practice of smuggling goods using balloons.

“The National Security Commission will meet next week to assess what can be done short-term that would be painful to the smugglers and to Lukashenko’s regime, which allows them to thrive,” Lithuania’s Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė said in a statement.

This is not the first time Vilnius Airport has been impacted by such incidents. It was also forced to close on October 5 and October 21 when smuggler balloons crossed into Lithuanian airspace.

In recent weeks, several other airports in NATO countries have faced incursions into controlled airspace by mysterious drones, many believed to be of Russian origin.

The major German hub, Munich Airport, was forced to abruptly shut down air traffic twice in less than 24 hours on October 4, canceling 17 flights after drones were spotted.

Similarly, officials in Denmark canceled inbound and outbound flights at Aalborg Airport and Copenhagen Airport on September 24, and again at Aalborg and Skrydstrup Air Base on September 27 after drones thought to be Russian were sighted over the Nordic country.

Meanwhile, Poland shot down several of 19 confirmed Russian drones with F-35 fighter jets on September 19, an action Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called an “unprecedented threat.”
