As a diehard Formula 1 fan, I’ve never been into watching NASCAR cars just (mostly) turn left. I know, I know, there’s more to it than that, but when I came across this bonkers feature sports documentary about the team that transformed a NASCAR into a vehicle that could survive the grueling and legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race, I was in.

American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans tells the true story of “Garage 56” and their breakneck 18-month mission to build and modify a stock Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to compete with the high-performing and finely engineered machines of the legendary European race.

Spearheaded by NASCAR CEO Jim France and the top-tier Hendrick Motorsports NASCAR team, the 97-minute documentary talks to all the key players and goes behind the scenes to show how they built, tested, and troubleshooted the car to achieve their dream.

Oh, then there’s the drivers. The 24-hour endurance race requires three drivers, and Garage 56 features some of the best to do it — seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, 2009 Formula 1 champion Jenson Button, and 2010 Le Mans winner Mike Rockenfeller, who all share their experience in the film.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a motorsports fan or not; American Thunder is a brilliant and exciting underdog story of how the team somehow fit this square peg into a round hole to run their car over 285 laps straight.

Cirque du Soleil: Without a Net

I saw Cirque du Soleil’s incredible flagship show O in Las Vegas many years ago, and I can honestly say that it is without a doubt the most incredible stage show I have ever seen.

It’s a surreal aquatic spectacle that takes place above, on, and in an enormous 25-foot-deep, 1.5-million-gallon pool in the Bellagio. The show features acrobats, swimmers, high-divers, aerialists, and more, as they fluidly move in and around the set.

Yep, it’s a true spectacle — and it almost went away forever.

Cirque du Soleil: Without a Net tells the true comeback story of the legendary show after it was shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, putting the careers and livelihoods of hundreds of employees at risk.

Sure, the 95-minute documentary is a bit of a promo for the show (who can blame them?), but it offers unprecedented access behind the scenes, with candid and emotional interviews with some of its performers, both in their homes and on set, as they cope with the uncertainty of the show and their futures.

The rehearsal and stage footage alone are worth the watch — I’d always wondered about the incredible feats of engineering involved in the production, as well as the technical precision required for it to be safe and run smoothly.

Without a Net more than delivers, as the crew and team work swiftly towards bringing the show back at the tail end of the pandemic. It truly is a unique look at the blood, sweat, and tears (and lots of water) that go into a world-class production.

Chris Nocco backs Mollyana Ward to ‘keep our children safe’

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco has endorsed Mollyana Ward for the District 3 seat on the Pasco County School Board, citing her strong commitment to student safety as a key reason for his support.

“Mollyana supports the strong partnership the Sheriff’s Office and School District share to keep our children safe. With Mollyana, our already strong partnership will continue, and I look forward to working together as we keep our children safe,” Nocco said.

Ward, a local businesswoman and mother, is running for the seat to succeed Cynthia Armstrong, who was first elected in 2010 and is not seeking re-election. Ward is campaigning on a platform focused on making “Pasco schools a place where every student can thrive,” while also emphasizing the importance of giving parents and grandparents a voice in education. School safety remains a central concern in her message.

“Sheriff Nocco’s record of protecting our community is second to none. The work he and his deputies do to help keep our community safe and enforce the rule of law is something we are all extremely grateful for, and I can’t thank him enough for the trust and confidence he’s placed in our campaign,” Ward said in response to Nocco’s endorsement.

Ward brings a wealth of business and community experience to her campaign. She is a licensed Realtor and former broker/owner, currently partnering with LPT Realty to mentor and grow a high-performing real estate team. Ward also serves as Chief Strategy Officer for Icemann Development, leading community and sports-centric projects across Florida.

During her sons’ years in school, Ward owned and operated an accredited child care facility that earned the state’s Gold Seal of Excellence. She also became the youngest-ever president of the Central Florida Association for Family Child Care at just 21 years old.

Ward directed children’s and youth ministries at her local church and previously chaired the Women of Wesley Chapel program for the North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce—an initiative she currently leads. Saks Off Fifth is closing main NYC store — and 9 other locations in the US

Another One Bites the Dust: Saks Off 5th to Close Nine Stores Across the US

It’s a sad day for savvy shoppers and the end of an era, some might say. Saks Off 5th, the off-price department store and sister brand to Saks Fifth Avenue, is closing nine stores across the United States, including several locations in the tri-state area.

In an effort to “place greater attention to our high-performing and high-potential store locations,” the company has decided to shutter stores in Austin, Texas; Chicago; Washington, D.C.; Franklin Mall in Philadelphia; Pittsburgh North (McKnight Road); Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania; East Hanover, New Jersey; Niagara Falls, New York; and West Hartford, Connecticut.

While these stores will remain open until the new year, the main Saks Off 5th store in New York City’s Upper East Side (125 E 57th Street) will officially close its doors on December 31.

When contacted for comment, Saks Off 5th stated, “We are confident this will better position the Saks Off 5th business for long-term success and look forward to continuing to deliver for our customers.”

Contrary to what many might assume, these closures do not signal bankruptcy. Last month, rumors circulated that Saks Global, the parent company, was potentially facing Chapter 11 bankruptcy. However, a spokesperson for the brand quickly dispelled these rumors: “It is important to note that a restructuring is not being contemplated. Moreover, we are making strong progress to reduce outstanding payments, invest in our transformation, and drive improved performance.”

As the retail industry continues to face challenges from declining foot traffic and unimpressive sales, Saks Off 5th joins a growing list of retailers closing locations. This past August, luxury retailer Nordstrom shut its Saint Louis Galleria store in St. Louis, Missouri, as well as a location in Santa Monica, California.

“We believe we’ll be best able to serve customers in each region by leveraging our surrounding stores and through our digital channels,” a Nordstrom spokesperson said in a statement.
