Elon Musk Wades Into the Debate Over Robotaxis Killing Cats. Guess Which Side He’s On

In between trying to become the world’s first trillionaire, expanding his defense contracting business, fighting the “woke mind virus,” feuding with Sam Altman, and overseeing half a dozen tech companies, Elon Musk has somehow found the time to wade into the debate over a tragic incident involving a rogue Waymo robotaxi.

Earlier this week in San Francisco, a beloved bodega cat was reportedly run over and killed by an autonomous vehicle—a fact the company, Waymo, appears to have admitted. The feline, named KitKat but also affectionately known as “the mayor of 16th street,” was a longtime staple of Randa’s Market in the city’s Mission neighborhood.

KitKat’s owner, Mike Zeidan, told The San Francisco Standard that his pet was hit by the robotaxi late Monday night. “Honestly, man, it’s difficult,” Zeidan said. “He was a one-of-a-kind cat. He brought joy to so many people. People loved him.”

Waymo confirmed the incident, stating, “We reviewed this, and while our vehicle was stopped to pick up passengers, a nearby cat darted under our vehicle as it was pulling away.” A company spokesperson added, “We send our deepest sympathies to the cat’s owner and the community who knew and loved him.”

On Friday, Elon Musk weighed in on the conversation by retweeting a post defending driverless cars as a potential savior, not a killer, of neighborhood pets. The original tweet by @WholeMarsBlog highlighted some sobering statistics: “5.4 million cats are hit by cars every year in the U.S., and 97 percent of those cats die from their injuries. Autonomy will dramatically reduce that number.”

Musk added his own comment: “True, many pets will be saved by autonomy.”

It’s commendable that Elon Musk took time out of his busy schedule to engage in the discourse surrounding KitKat’s unfortunate death. Considering Musk’s own ambitions to launch a robotaxi service, it’s clear he has a vested interest in this debate.

However, the truth is that we don’t yet know if autonomous cars will actually reduce the number of feline deaths on the road. The debate continues as technology and public safety evolve hand in hand.

Dutch centrists declare victory in election, right-wing calls it ‘arrogance’

“We are the biggest party in the Netherlands! Now we’ll get to work for all Dutch people,” D66 leader Rob Jetten declared on social media Friday.

“I think we’ve now shown the rest of Europe and the world that it is possible to beat populist movements if you campaign with a positive message for your country,” Jetten added.

### D66 and PVV Neck-and-Neck in Election

In Wednesday’s election, D66 and the Party for Freedom (PVV) finished neck-and-neck, with both parties expected to secure 26 seats in the Dutch parliament. Jetten had earlier expressed caution, saying D66 was “waiting in suspense for the definitive result” due to the extremely narrow polls. However, after media outlets began projecting his victory, his stance appeared to change.

National news agency ANP reported that D66 edged out the Party for Freedom by a narrow margin of 15,000 votes and projected that the party would gain an additional seat. The official binding results will be released by the nation’s Electoral Council no earlier than Monday.

### Historic Milestone for the Netherlands

If confirmed, the 38-year-old former consultant would become the Netherlands’ youngest-ever prime minister and the first openly gay person to lead the national government.

“The positive forces have won!” Jetten declared regarding D66’s significant gains. “I want to get to work for all Dutch people because this is the land of us all!”

### Party for Freedom Responds

The Party for Freedom, led by lawmaker Geert Wilders, experienced a marked decline from its first-place finish in the 2023 elections. Wilders rebuked Jetten’s declaration of victory, emphasizing the importance of waiting for the official announcement.

“What arrogance not to wait for that!” Wilders said. He continued, “But even if D66 becomes the largest, the PVV will not let the Netherlands be dismantled by Jetten and his ilk and will oppose his left-liberal mismanagement with full force from day one, 26 seats strong!”

Wilders established the PVV such that he is the only registered member, allowing candidates who win seats to act as lawmakers while Wilders retains sole control of the party’s platform.

### Significant Decline for PVV

Regardless of whether D66 is officially declared the largest party, the election results highlight a marked drop in support for the PVV. Earlier projections in September showed PVV candidates winning 33 seats out of the 150-seat legislature.

The PVV triggered this week’s election after leaving a fragile governing coalition in June due to disagreements over asylum application and family reunification freezes. The PVV was the largest party in the coalition, but other parties refused to join if Wilders were to lead the government.

### Impact of Teenager’s Murder on Election

Support for the right-wing PVV, known for its vocal anti-immigration stance and skepticism of Islam, surged months ago following the high-profile murder of a 17-year-old girl named Lisa in Amsterdam.

Lisa was reportedly cycling home after a night out when she was fatally stabbed by a 22-year-old asylum seeker. Reports say she was stabbed multiple times in the neck as she attempted to call authorities. Emergency responders arrived too late, finding her deceased. The suspect, a resident of the city’s Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers facility, has been arrested and is also believed to have attacked and sexually assaulted another woman in Amsterdam just five days earlier. His identity remains undisclosed pending trial, in line with Dutch law.

### D66’s Migration Platform

D66’s platform proposes continuing current migration policies with a stronger emphasis on fairness for arriving immigrants.

“We want asylum procedures to be fast and fair, and our reception facilities to be humane and fairly distributed across the country,” their platform states. “We will also support the implementation of the European Migration Pact in June 2026 as an important step toward a fair, humane, and effective asylum system across Europe. Newcomers should have the opportunity to work as soon as possible or pursue an education.”

### Uneasy Coalition Prospects

Forming a coalition government will prove challenging due to the diverse range of parties in the legislature.

The center-right People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) avoided catastrophic losses, losing just two seats and placing third.

In contrast, the GreenLeft-Labor alliance suffered setbacks, dropping five seats to finish fourth. Following the underperformance, leader Frans Timmermans resigned on Wednesday.

### Gains for Christian Democrat Alliance and Smaller Right-Wing Parties

Although the Christian Democrat Alliance did not surpass any of the largest parties, it made significant strides, increasing its seats from five to 18, bringing it close to the GreenLeft-Labor and VVD.

Many of the votes lost by the PVV migrated to smaller right-wing parties, including JA21—a movement focused on curbing migration and increasing police funding—which secured an impressive eight seats.

This election highlights shifting political landscapes in the Netherlands, reflecting broader European trends in immigration policy debates and the rise and fall of populist movements. As the final results await confirmation, all eyes remain on the evolving coalition negotiations and the direction of Dutch governance in the months ahead.

Kevin Durant Says He Used To Be Depressed About His Looks, It Was Stupid!

**Not This Again with Bobbi Althoff: Kevin Durant Opens Up About Insecurity Over His Height**

Most people wish they were a few inches taller, but NBA star Kevin Durant is opening up about how being vertically gifted actually made him insecure. The two-time NBA champion admitted he was once depressed over being “too tall, too skinny.”

Durant shared his mental battle on Bobbi Althoff’s “Not This Again” podcast, revealing that around six years ago, he struggled deeply with his appearance. “I was insecure about how I looked,” he said. “It hit me all at one time.”

KD explained that his size and physique made him stand out “for no reason,” which contributed to his insecurity. He noted that this feeling was especially strong when he was around people who were shorter than him.

So, what did he do to overcome these feelings?

“I just snapped out of it because it was stupid to even care. I just thought about it too much,” Durant said. “And I just needed to stop thinking about it.”

Fortunately, the 37-year-old is now in a much better place regarding his appearance.

The conversation between Durant and Althoff didn’t stop there. Durant also opened up about why he will never get married, his friendship with Drake, and much more.

Wind decreases through the weekend

Gusty winds prevailed today and will continue tonight through most of tomorrow, gradually easing by the end of the weekend. Aside from the breezy conditions, it looks to be a decent weekend with mostly sunshine and cool temperatures.

The strengthening area of low pressure that brought rain from yesterday through this morning is now moving away. High pressure will settle in by Sunday, allowing the pressure gradient to weaken. As a result, the wind won’t be as strong by the end of the weekend.

Wind gusts will remain strongest tomorrow, especially in the morning, with gusts near or above 30 mph possible. While noticeable, this won’t pose a damaging wind threat for most areas. It will stay breezy through tomorrow evening before the wind relaxes overnight into Sunday. Sunday afternoon will see only a light breeze.

Saturday morning temperatures will start in the low 40s, then rebound to the mid-50s under mostly sunny skies. With clear skies and lighter winds Saturday night, temperatures will drop to near freezing by Sunday morning. Sunday will be a cold start, and the day will stay cool with highs mainly in the low 50s under mostly sunny conditions.

Don’t forget, Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend—hello to 6:00 a.m. sunrises and 4:30 p.m. sunsets!

The weekend will remain dry, with the next chance of showers arriving Monday night and lingering into early Tuesday morning.

Bradley Beal gets positive injury update after 2-game absence

Bradley Beal and the Los Angeles Clippers haven’t gotten off to the start they wanted this season, but they’re hopeful that a stretch of five games at home over their next six will help get them back on the right track.

Beal has missed the last two games for the Clippers, dealing with lower back soreness. He initially suffered the injury while taking a charge during the Clippers’ home win against the Phoenix Suns. According to the Clippers’ injury report heading into Friday night’s Halloween contest against the New Orleans Pelicans, Bradley Beal is unlisted on the injury report and expected to play.

Without Beal, the Clippers have been a mixed bag — winning an impressive game against the Portland Trail Blazers at home, while getting blown out by the Golden State Warriors on the road.

Beal is also still working his way back from offseason knee surgery. The guard underwent arthroscopic knee surgery back in May following his second season with the Phoenix Suns. A few months later, he reached a buyout agreement with the Suns and joined the LA Clippers in free agency.

So far, Beal has only played the first half of the team’s final preseason game against the Warriors and has logged a total of 40 minutes across two games for the Clippers this season.

Following the Clippers’ loss to the Warriors, head coach Tyronn Lue emphasized how important Beal is to the team. “I think teams are trying to pressure us more, but we are missing a key component which is Bradley Beal — he gives us a shooter, a guy who can playmake, a guy who can handle the basketball as well,” Lue said after the game. “So when you add that to the mix, it does make us better, but we just can’t have the offensive lulls throughout the course of the games like we’ve been having. It’s combinations, guys we have on the floor. I like our second unit staggering James and Kawhi, but that didn’t happen [against the Warriors] once they got tired, so that put us in a tough bind.”

Through two games played this season, Beal has averaged just 5.5 points, 1.0 rebound, and 1.0 assist as he gradually ramps up his activity level and comfort with the Clippers’ system.

Friday night’s game between the Clippers and Pelicans will also mark the first night of NBA Cup games this season, adding another layer of competitive excitement for the teams and fans alike.
