Minecraft Mounts of Mayhem: Horses Can Now Swim and Float in Water

Minecraft Mounts of Mayhem is an exciting new game update scheduled for release this winter. Mojang officially announced this update during their bi-annual live event in September, showcasing several major features, such as the addition of nautilus and zombie nautilus mobs, spears, zombie horses, and more.

While the developers shared some highlights, many new features are being gradually introduced through snapshots, betas, and previews leading up to the full release. One of the most notable recent changes came with the Java Edition snapshot 25w44a, which included a small but game-changing quality-of-life improvement for horses that will significantly alter player interaction with them.

Horses Will Soon Swim and Float in Water

Since horses were introduced in Minecraft, they have been unable to be ridden across water. Unlike in real life, where horses can run through shallow water and swim even while ridden, Minecraft’s horses would start sinking as soon as a player attempted to ride them over water. This caused players to be dismounted when their horses submerged beneath the surface.

Despite players dismounting, horses themselves were capable of swimming and floating freely on water, creating a frustrating dynamic. This limitation made water travel challenging and cumbersome. When crossing narrow rivers or water bodies, players had to either risk sinking and dragging their horses behind, jump over the water entirely, or use boats while leashing their horses to transport them across.

What’s New in Snapshot 25w44a?

The latest snapshot 25w44a introduced several new features in preparation for the Minecraft Mounts of Mayhem update. Among these are Parched skeletons and Camel Husk mob variants, which add more desert-themed challenges for players.

However, the most impactful change is the improved behavior of rideable mobs such as horses, mules, donkeys, and camels when in water. These mobs will no longer sink when ridden. Instead, they will now float and swim forward at a slow but steady pace.

This change addresses a long-standing annoyance in the Minecraft community by allowing players to cross water bodies while mounted on their horses and similar mobs without losing control. Though the swimming speed is slow, players can now traverse rivers, lakes, and even entire oceans more seamlessly than before.

The best-of-seven World Series is all even at two games apiece after the Toronto Blue Jays bounced back from Monday’s epic 18-inning marathon to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 in Game 4 on Tuesday night.

Both teams were running on fumes following the nearly seven-hour showdown, but Toronto’s offense came alive behind Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette. The Dodgers took an early lead on a sacrifice fly from Enrique Hernández, but Guerrero Jr.’s two-run homer in the third inning put the Blue Jays ahead for good.

The Blue Jays’ victory came just hours after country music star Brad Paisley declared himself “Mr. More Baseball.” Paisley performed the national anthem before the marathon Game 3, which the Dodgers won 6-5 on Freddie Freeman’s homer that ended the game nearly seven hours after Paisley’s performance.

Shohei Ohtani, one of the Dodgers’ heroes this postseason, started Game 4 for Los Angeles. He pitched six innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out six. Ohtani made history just one night earlier, becoming the first player since 1906 to record four extra-base hits in a World Series game and reaching base nine times, tying a Series record.

For the Blue Jays, Bo Bichette delivered a two-RBI single in the seventh inning to extend the lead. Shane Bieber earned the win, pitching 5⅓ innings and allowing just one run. Ohtani was charged with the loss.

After Ohtani’s exit, the Dodgers used only three relievers, while the Blue Jays relied on four pitchers in total to close out the nine-inning win.

Seattle-based retail giant Amazon has confirmed it will cut approximately 14,000 corporate jobs, with employees beginning to receive layoff notices starting Tuesday. The exact number of positions affected in Washington state remains unclear.

Nick Pasion, a reporter for the Puget Sound Business Journal who covers big tech, shared insights from Amazon employees who say their managers are remaining tight-lipped. Amazon employs about 350,000 corporate workers globally, making the potential reduction of up to 14,000 jobs a substantial cut. Todd Bishop, co-founder of GeekWire, highlighted the magnitude: “If you’re talking about up to 30,000 cuts globally, that’s a pretty significant portion.”

While Amazon has yet to confirm the layoffs publicly or provide an official reason, some analysts suggest the moves may be part of post-pandemic downsizing efforts. According to Pasion, “Amazon notoriously overhired during the pandemic, increasing headcount by tens of thousands.” The company has already taken steps to correct this, laying off 27,000 employees across 2022 and 2023.

Joel Quenneville returns to South Florida with a win and applause

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Joel Quenneville returned to South Florida on Tuesday to applause, a welcome message, and a win.

Quenneville last coached a game in Sunrise four years ago as head coach of the Florida Panthers before he resigned and was banned from the NHL for his handling of a sexual assault scandal involving his 2010 Stanley Cup-winning Chicago Blackhawks squad.

“I’m appreciative,” Quenneville said after Tuesday’s game against the Panthers, which his Anaheim Ducks won in a shootout, 3-2. “My time here was great. It was short, but I’ve been watching their success over the last three and four years.”

Quenneville, along with Blackhawks executives Stan Bowman and Al MacIsaac, was banned from the league for nearly three years after an independent investigation concluded that the team mishandled allegations raised by former player Kyle Beach against video coach Brad Aldrich during the team’s Stanley Cup run in 2010. The trio was reinstated last July.

Bowman became the Edmonton Oilers’ general manager three weeks later, while Quenneville — the second-winningest coach in NHL history — was hired by the Anaheim Ducks in May.

Since the incident, Quenneville has spoken openly about his personal growth, noting after his hiring that he has worked to educate himself on abuse.

“I own my mistakes,” Quenneville said in May. “While I believed wholeheartedly the issue was handled by management, I take full responsibility for not following up and asking more questions. That’s entirely on me. Over nearly four years, I’ve taken time to reflect, to listen to experts and advocates, and educate myself on the realities of abuse, trauma and how to be a better leader. I hope others can learn from my inaction.”

Quenneville has spent parts of 25 NHL seasons behind the benches of St. Louis, Colorado, Chicago, and Florida. He coached the Blackhawks for more than 10 years and led them to championships in 2010, 2013, and 2015.

The Blackhawks fired Quenneville in November 2018 after a 6-6-3 start, and he joined the Panthers for the 2019-20 season.

Earlier this month, Quenneville returned to the United Center in Chicago to a mixed reaction of boos and cheers. The reaction to his return to Sunrise appeared more subdued.

The public address announcer at Amerant Bank Arena called Quenneville’s name as a “welcome back” message flashed on the jumbotron in the first period. The crowd responded with brief applause and cheers.

Quenneville has expressed admiration for the Panthers’ success as back-to-back Stanley Cup champions over the past few years.

“I remember when I came here, Vinny [Panthers owner Vincent Viola] told me, ‘We’re going to win the Cup. We’re going to win multiple cups,’” Quenneville said. “So he was right.”
