During a roughly 25-minute video conference with the media Monday, managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner conceded it would be ideal if the Yankees could find a way to lower their payroll while acknowledging the reduction might not happen. “Would it be ideal if I went down (with our payroll)? Of course,” Steinbrenner said Monday. “But does that mean that’s going to happen? Of course not. We want to field a team we know we believe could win a championship. “It just hasn’t changed which is why payrolls have gone up probably every year. It doesn’t mean they won’t go slightly down one year and then up the year after that. It all depends on what’s out there and what the possibilities are and how much I feel we’re able to or we need to pull the trigger on those possibilities. Those comments quickly made the usual rounds on social media and turned into fodder for sports talk radio shows fatigued from talking about the New York Giants being the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention or seeking a break from dissecting the Mets trading Brandon Nimmo for Marcus Semien. In the immediate aftermath of Steinbrenner’s comments, the Red Sox and Blue Jays made investments to enhance playoff rosters from last season. In the roughly 50-plus hours since Steinbrenner’s comments, the Red Sox and Blue Jays added payrolls and made moves they hope will bolster their pitching. The Red Sox were first to strike, trading with former executive Chaim Bloom to land Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals to potentially give them the No. 2 starter they clearly lacked after Garrett Crochet. Gray is assured of $40 million in the next two seasons but Boston’s payroll hit will be lessened by the Cardinals assuming $20 million, doing so by sending the Red Sox a payment of $2. 5 million on April 15, May 15, June 15, July 15, August 15 and September 15 before contributing $5 million on Dec. 1, 2026 the day the current collective bargaining agreement expires. The Blue Jays were next with a bigger move by reportedly getting Dylan Cease on a $210 million, seven-year deal. It is the first major free agent pitcher to come off the board and a contract that may set the market for how other free agent starters are paid. The Yankees certainly were not going to engage with trading for Gray. They did that already in 2017 and after he was 15-16 with a 4. 51 ERA in 41 regular-season appearances, GM Brian Cashman was opening admitting Gray was going to get traded, doing so at the annual post-mortem press conference. Since leaving the Yankees, Gray was 23-20 with a 3. 49 ERA for the Reds and 16-13 with a 2. 90 ERA for the Twins. The steadiness of his showings in the two Midwest stops prompted the Cardinals to sign him to a three-year deal that contains a club option. Gray cashed in after being the Cy Young runner-up to Gerrit Cole and with the Cardinals he is among five with at least 200 strikeouts in the previous two seasons. “When you think about what Sonny has been in this league, it’s a guy who’s pitched at the front of rotations,” Boston Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow told reporters. “Those things that we think pitchers carry from year to year are things like strikeout rates and walk rates and ability to just stay off barrels. He excels there.” The Blue Jays will be saying similar things about Cease some point after adding him to a rotation featuring Kevin Gausman entering his free agent year and rookie Trey Yesavage after a dynamic postseason, especially against the Yankees. Cease is getting the largest free agent contract in Toronto’s history with some deferred money according to reports. Although Cease was 8-12 with a 4. 55 ERA last season for San Diego, he also has five straight 200-strikeout seasons and took a no-hitter into the seventh at Yankee Stadium last May and seemed to get better luck last season by allowing a . 260 average on balls in play, two years after that figure was . 330. Striking early to land Cease seems to show Toronto is not playing around with its money after their captivating playoff run resulted in 10 home games. After adding one of the more durable pitchers in recent years, the Blue Jays can shift focus towards retaining Bo Bichette, who some would like on the Yankees as an upgrade to shortstop Anthony Volpe. So far, the Yankees’ big expenditure is seeing Trent Grisham come back on $22 million qualifying offer to the chagrin of many fans after he hit 36 homers while being paid five million. For the Yankees about $78 million of next year’s payroll are being deployed on Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon and Max Fried. The trio represents the last three major free agents from other teams signed by the Yankees, who ended the regular season with a payroll of $301 million before various bonuses and are hoping to get through April as Cole and Rodon finish their injury recoveries. The quick strikes of the Red Sox and Blue Jays do not mean the Yankees will move quicker but for many fans it creates slightly more angst until their team does something they like.

Blizzard conditions, heavy lake effect snow to slam Michigan through Thanksgiving
Here are the latest forecast highlights from the National Weather Service offices across Michigan: A dangerous early-season winter storm is producing blizzard conditions across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Michigan, with additional snowfall of 12 to 18 inches expected through Thursday evening in the hardest-hit areas. Strong winds gusting to 50 mph combined with heavy snow are creating whiteout conditions and making travel extremely hazardous. Blizzard Warnings remain in effect for lakeshore counties of the western and north-central Upper Peninsula until Thursday evening, where snowfall rates of one inch per hour or more are combining with wind gusts greater than 45 mph to drastically reduce visibility. The Keweenaw, Ontonagon, Gogebic counties and the Michigamme Highlands of Baraga and Marquette counties north of U. S. 41 are expected to receive the heaviest accumulations. Winter Storm Warnings cover much of northern Lower Michigan, where 6 to 12 inches of snow is forecast through Friday, with localized amounts of 18 to 24 inches possible from southern Antrim to western Crawford County. The storm system, currently centered over the eastern Upper Peninsula, will continue moving northeast into Canada through Thursday. Behind the system, intense lake effect snow bands will develop Thursday morning and settle in by Thursday afternoon, particularly affecting areas from Traverse Bay southeast across the length of northern Michigan down to Saginaw Bay. The most dominant band appears focused on the I-75 and U. S. 131 corridors, where near-zero visibility under heavy bands will likely create rapidly changing and dangerous travel conditions. Significant impacts on I-75 may extend from Roscommon and West Branch north to Waters, while the U. S. 131 corridor between Elmira and Fife Lake is of particular concern on Thanksgiving Day. Strong winds will continue to be a major factor through Thursday morning, with gusts of 35 to 50 mph across much of the state. High Wind Warnings are in effect for lakeshore areas of western Lower Michigan until 7 a. m. Thursday, where gusts could reach 60 mph. Wind Advisories cover the remainder of Lower Michigan through early Thursday morning. The combination of heavy snow and strong winds may cause downed limbs and trees, leading to localized power outages. Wind chills will drop into the teens Thursday morning and remain in the low to mid 20s during the afternoon. On Lake Superior, Storm Warnings continue until midnight Wednesday for offshore waters from Keweenaw Bay to Grand Marais, where wind gusts of 57 mph and waves of 15 to 20 feet are occurring. Gale Warnings remain in effect for all Lake Superior waters through Thursday night, with waves persisting at 12 to 18 feet in the eastern half of the lake through Thursday evening. Minor lakeshore flooding and beach erosion are possible along the Lake Superior shoreline through Thursday. On Lake Michigan, Storm Warnings are in effect until 1 a. m. Thursday for nearshore waters, where wind gusts around 60 mph and waves of 14 to 20 feet are expected this evening. Lake effect snow will gradually diminish Friday as the storm system pulls farther away and surface high pressure briefly moves over the region. However, attention will quickly turn to another winter system approaching for the weekend.

Campbell’s fires executive who was recorded saying company’s products are for ‘poor people’
The Campbell’s Co. said Wednesday it has fired an executive who was recorded making racist comments and mocking the company’s products and customers. Martin Bally, a vice president in Campbell’s information security department, was named in a lawsuit filed last week by Robert Garza, a former Campbell’s employee who said he was fired Jan. 30 after he reported Bally’s comments to a supervisor. The lawsuit was filed in Michigan, where both Garza and Bally live. Campbell’s is based in Camden, New Jersey. In the lawsuit, Garza claimed he met with Bally in November 2024 to discuss his salary. During the meeting, which Garza allegedly recorded, Bally described Campbell’s as “highly process(ed) food” and said it was for “poor people.” Garza claimed in the lawsuit that Bally made racist remarks about Indian workers, whom he called “idiots.” Garza said Bally also told him that he often went to work high after consuming marijuana edibles. Campbell’s said Wednesday it first learned of Garza’s lawsuit last week. After listening to portions of the recording, Campbell’s said it believed the voice was Bally’s. Bally was fired Tuesday. “The comments were vulgar, offensive and false, and we apologize for the hurt they have caused,” the company said in a statement. “This behavior does not reflect our values and the culture of our company, and we will not tolerate that kind of language under any circumstances.” Garza’s attorney didn’t respond when The Associated Press asked for a copy of the audio recording. But according to Local 4 news in Detroit, which interviewed Garza and played a portion of the recording on air, Bally said Campbell’s products were unhealthy during his expletive-filled rant. “Bioengineered meat. I don’t want to eat a piece of chicken that came from a 3D printer,” Bally said. Campbell’s defended its chicken Wednesday, saying it comes from long-trusted U. S. suppliers, is raised without antibiotics and meets high quality standards. “The comments heard on the recording about our food are not only inaccurate, they are patently absurd,” Campbell’s said. Larry Kopp, the chairman and founder of The TASC Group, a strategic communications and public relations company, said Campbell’s should have fired Bally and reached a settlement with Garza as soon as it learned of the incident. “If they had settled they would not be in this mess,” Kopp said. “Recordings like these are devastating and should never see the light of day.” Garza is seeking monetary damages from Campbell’s, Bally and from his former manager, J. D. Aupperle. Garza said he told Aupperle about the conversation with Bally shortly before he was fired. Campbell’s said Wednesday that Aupperle remains employed by the company.

US Nasdaq, Germany’s Deutsche Boerse lead lobby against relaxed SEC crypto regulation
In a letter published on the SEC’s website and dated November 21, the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), whose members include Nasdaq and Deutsche Boerse, stated that the regulator must avoid allowing crypto companies to “bypass regulatory principles that have safeguarded markets for decades.” WFE chief executive Nandini Sukumar stated that exempting unregistered crypto firms would risk allowing products that look like equities to be offered without the protections that accompany real stock ownership. The body representing exchanges voicing its concerns comes as the SEC considers whether to issue a form of “innovation exemption” that would allow crypto companies to offer blockchain-based tokens representing exposure to listed stocks, instruments that would be sold to US retail investors without the platforms registering as broker-dealers. This proposal, which is supported by several crypto platforms, is being considered by SEC chair Paul Atkins, highlighting the agency’s recalibrated approach to digital assets under the Trump administration. The tokenization debate divides traditional and crypto finance This is not the first time the WFE has raised concerns about tokenized equities. In August, it wrote to regulators in the U. S., Europe, and Asia, urging a crackdown on unlicensed platforms offering tokenized stocks, warning of investor-protection issues and reputational risks for listed companies whose names are used without consent. It went further to ask that regulators apply the same rules used on securities to tokenized assets. Despite the body’s concerns, interest in tokenization continues to grow across the financial sector. Large banks, asset managers, and trading venues have begun exploring blockchain-based settlement and token-form assets as part of efforts to modernize financial infrastructure. The trend has gained more traction this year as crypto-native platforms seek direct access to the US equities market, while traditional exchanges experiment with on-chain settlement models. Nasdaq’s push for regulated tokenized securities. Nasdaq, one of the WFE’s most prominent members, has simultaneously been pushing for a regulated path toward tokenization. In September, it submitted a formal rule-change proposal that would allow the exchange to list and trade stocks in tokenized form, assigning the digital instruments the same regulatory treatment, including rights and CUSIP identification, as conventional shares. However, Ondo Finance, a blockchain startup offering financial market solutions, called for delays until Nasdaq provides further details on how trades in tokenized form would be processed through the Depository Trust Company, which operates the core plumbing of US securities settlement. Within the WFE itself, members acknowledge tokenization’s potential. The letter describes blockchain-based equity instruments as a “natural evolution in capital markets.” However, many exchanges argue that innovation must occur within the existing regulatory framework rather than through exemptions granted to unlicensed crypto platforms. James Auliffe, head of the WFE’s technology working group, said equity markets are already “very, very efficient,” and that proponents of moving trading onto blockchains still need to prove the benefits outweigh the costs. High stakes for regulators and markets The SEC’s decision on the matter will shape the future of how equities are traded and accessed in the US. Allowing tokenized stocks to be offered without conventional broker-dealer oversight could potentially enable firms outside the traditional financial system to compete directly with exchanges and brokers that face far stricter compliance obligations. Investor advocates fear that retail traders may not understand the difference between owning a token linked to a stock and holding the real equity itself. Earlier this year, companies including OpenAI warned that tokenized versions of their shares circulating on trading apps did not represent actual ownership. Mainly Mozart holds Concertmaster Wine Pairing Series event
Mainly Mozart, the San Diego nonprofit behind the acclaimed Mainly Mozart All-Star Orchestra Festival, held the first of this year’s Wine Pairing Series Nov. 15-16 at the Fairbanks Ranch Country Club, following the enthusiastic response to its 2024 debut, according to a news release. Presented by Jean-Charles Boisett Wineries, this year’s series, subtitled “Taste What You Hear”, features four concertmasters across four weekends of performances, an expansion from last year’s three, and adds Saturday concerts alongside Sundays. The 2025/2026 series showcases four of America’s leading concertmasters: Jun Iwasaki of the Kansas City Symphony (Nov. 15-16, 2025), Nurit Bar-Josef of the National Symphony (Jan. 10-11, 2026), Nathan Cole of the Boston Symphony (Feb. 21-22, 2026), and Frank Huang of the New York Philharmonic (April 11-12, 2026). Photos on this page were taken at the Nov. 16 event. The Mainly Mozart Wine Pairing Series events begin with an open hors d’oeuvres reception before audiences are seated for an intimate concert and tasting experience. Each piece on the program is paired with curated wines, chosen to mirror the style and emotion of the music. Wines are poured and selection commentary is provided before each musical work, setting the stage for a multi-sensory experience, the news release stated. “It’s not every day you get to enjoy a glass of wine inspired by the music you’re hearing in the moment,” said Nancy Laturno, Mainly Mozart co-founder and CEO, in the news release. “We loved this idea, and the enthusiastic response from attendees encouraged us to expand the series this year adding Saturday concerts and a fourth concertmaster. The wine selections are exceptional on their own, but paired with the music, they elevate both the flavor and the experience.” Tickets are available at www. mainlymozart. org/wine-series.

Two National Guards Not Dead: FBI Director Reveals ‘Critical Condition’ After Gov. Morrisey Blunder
Chaos and confusion gripped the nation’s capital on the eve of Thanksgiving after a brazen afternoon ambush left two National Guard members fighting for their lives. While initial reports from West Virginia officials declared the soldiers dead, federal authorities were forced to intervene with a sombre correction regarding the surprise attack near the White House. FBI Director Kash Patel moved quickly to clarify the situation late Wednesday, revealing that the victims remain in critical condition following the shooting on 26 November. The incident, which occurred just blocks from the executive mansion, triggered an immediate lockdown and highlighted the perilous atmosphere facing troops deployed in Washington, DC. West Virginia Governor Retracts Premature Fatality Announcement The fog of war appeared to cloud official communications in the hours following the violence. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey had earlier released a statement erroneously reporting that the two troops, both members of the West Virginia National Guard, had died from their injuries. This declaration sent shockwaves through the community before being contradicted by federal law enforcement. Upon realising the error, Morrisey issued a retraction citing ‘conflicting reports.’ He walked back his previous confirmation with a plea for patience as the situation developed. ‘We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information,’ Morrisey stated. ‘Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community.’ FBI Director Confirms Soldiers Are Battling for Survival Kash Patel provided the definitive update on the soldiers’ status, urging the public to focus on the victims’ recovery rather than the administrative confusion. He emphasised the gravity of their injuries while highlighting their role in the capital’s security operations. ‘Please send your prayers to those brave warriors who are in critical condition and their families,’ Patel said. ‘They are here serving our country. They are here protecting everyday Americans and citizens around the world in our nation’s capital.’ Jeff Carroll, executive assistant chief at the Metropolitan Police Department, confirmed that the wounded guardsmen were being treated at a local hospital. Lone Gunman Ambushed Troops Outside Subway Station The attack unfolded with terrifying speed outside a subway station in the heart of Washington, DC. Mayor Muriel Bowser described the event as a ‘targeted shooting,’ dispelling fears of a wider coordinated terror plot. Police officials indicated that the aggressor acted alone when he opened fire on the unsuspecting service members. ‘At this point, we have no other suspects,’ Carroll told reporters at an evening news conference. ‘It appears to be a lone gunman that raised the firearm and ambushed these members of the National Guard and was quickly taken into custody by other National Guard members and law enforcement members.’ Investigators have found no evidence to suggest the shooter received assistance. The focus remains on uncovering the motive behind the sudden violence. Fellow Guardsmen Subdued Suspect in Moments of Heroism Despite the shock of the ambush, other National Guard members in the vicinity reacted with immediate professionalism. According to Chief Carroll, troops nearby heard the gunfire and rushed into danger to neutralise the threat before police units could arrive. ‘They heard the gunfire, they actually were able to intervene and to kind of hold down the suspect after he had been shot on the ground until law enforcement got there within moments,’ Carroll detailed. The suspect, who was shot during the confrontation, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Police are continuing to investigate who fired the round that struck the assailant. High-Security Alert Amidst Holiday Preparations The shooting occurred while President Donald Trump was away at his residence in Palm Beach, Florida, for the holiday. Nevertheless, the proximity of the violence to the seat of executive power necessitated a swift lockdown of the White House. This violence underscores the tension in Washington, where thousands of troops have been stationed for months. They are part of a broader initiative by the President to combat crime in the district, a mission that has now seen its own enforcers become targets.
