I moved from NYC to Colombia earlier this year. The change has helped my burnout and saved me money.

Over time, I upgraded: from sharing a tiny apartment in Manhattan with difficult people to a larger place in Brooklyn with great roommates. From a bachelor’s degree to a master’s. From casual sex to celibacy. From undiagnosed to clarity about my mental health. And I realized: I was craving stability.

But New York, for all its glory, couldn’t provide that for me. Friendships sometimes felt hollow since I came from a different culture. Dating felt like trying to catch fish with my bare hands. The money I made went straight to rent, food, and the occasional festival.

When I first moved there at 22, I thought the world was my oyster. At 30, it still is.

In January, after five months in Europe living with my family, the city suddenly felt wrong. I stopped going out on weekends. Other than the gym, I barely left my apartment. That “New York or nowhere” slogan started to feel like brainwashing.

My mentor once called New York “a playground for 24-year-olds,” and I started to think he was right. I was aging out of it—or my previous lifestyle.

Timing was on my side. My lease in East Harlem was up in March. My boss was supportive, some colleagues had already been working remotely, and client meetings had been online since the start of the pandemic. Plus, travel is great for writing.

So I set off to Argentina on a whim. Six weeks later, I was hiking Machu Picchu.

In June, I landed in Medellín, a city the nomad community calls paradise. As the cab from the airport turned a corner to reveal the valley, the mountains, and a soft fog blanketing it in the late-afternoon sun, I understood why. The visual evoked the same emotions as the New York skyline.

“Paradise” goes beyond the city’s beauty: I made local friends immediately, who don’t speak English, and thus helped me become fluent in Spanish within five months of learning it. We play beach volleyball on Sundays, followed by a barbecue dinner. Expats and locals merge in a very NYC way.

I’ve replaced the subway with Uber Moto, and as we speed past cars and trees, I can barely remember what sweating on the train felt like. That first Airbnb was in Laureles, and in July, I moved to another one in Ciudad del Río, Poblado.

I’ve continued to stay in Airbnbs. I like not signing a lease; it gives me freedom and independence, and I like having a turnkey apartment. Right now, I’m staying in a large studio in a luxury building with a pool and spa, paying maybe 15% of what I would be paying for similar accommodations in New York.

In Colombia, I buy high-quality groceries and rarely spend more than $50 a week. I can get coffee and a pastry for less than $5.

I did go back to New York for three weeks in August to see my friends and storage unit. Being back as a quasi-visitor felt exciting. But I also felt the same subtle panic I had grown accustomed to living there—only worse—after feeling transformed by five months in South America.

My weekly grocery haul was now $150, thanks to tariffs. The subway ride to Manhattan, squished between commuters, felt endless. My attempt to visit the dentist failed—I had already hit my insurance max for the year.

When my redeye back to Medellín took off, I breathed a sigh of relief. And I was proud: of lugging 260 pounds of luggage down from my fifth-floor walk-up. Of making a decision for a calmer life.

The next morning, after coffee at my favorite spot, I called my mom in Germany: “I’m home.”

My Medellín friends welcomed me with flowers and chicharrón.

New York will always be a home I can return to. But life in Colombia feels like a rebirth.

I’m drinking the LATAM Kool-Aid now.

Can you actually get high from licking a toad?

In 2022, the U.S. National Park Service posted a blurry photo of a toad, snapped by a night-vision wildlife camera, accompanied by a tongue-in-cheek warning:

“As we say with most things you come across in a national park, whether it be a banana slug, unfamiliar mushroom, or a large toad with glowing eyes in the dead of night, please refrain from licking. Thank you.”

This message alludes to the urban legend that licking a toad can get you high. But do toads really have psychedelic properties?

### The Colorado River Toad and Its Potent Secretion

It is true that a certain toad found across the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico secretes a potent psychoactive chemical on its skin. However, licking these toads is more likely to send you to the hospital than take you on a psychedelic trip.

The Colorado River toad (*Incilius alvarius*), also called the Sonoran Desert toad, has poison glands on its head that release the chemical 5-MeO-DMT.

“I think it’s one of the most potent psychedelics that there is,” said David E. Nichols, a professor emeritus of pharmacology at Purdue University and the first to create a synthetic analogue of 5-MeO-DMT.

5-MeO-DMT is a chemical that exerts its effects by binding to serotonin receptors in the brain. The drug lasts for about 15 to 30 minutes and can cause euphoria, a sense of nothingness, near-death-like experiences, and amnesia.

According to Nichols, the drug can even cause complete dissolution of a person’s sense of self, to the point where a user no longer remembers that they even used a drug.

### Why Licking Toads Won’t Get You High

However, 5-MeO-DMT doesn’t have any psychedelic effects when ingested orally. This means licking the chemical off of a toad wouldn’t get you high. It requires more complicated methods such as smoking.

What’s more, it can be very dangerous to lick these toads, experts warn.

“Licking a toad is a no-go,” Haley Dourron, a postdoctoral researcher at Linköping University in Sweden, told Live Science in an email. “Even pets that have licked the toad have ended up needing emergency medical care.”

That’s because Colorado River toads also secrete chemicals called cardiac glycosides. These compounds increase the strength of heart muscle contractions, and their effects on heart function can quickly become dangerous, leading to potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias.

### Threats to Colorado River Toads

Yet the potential health risks haven’t stopped poachers from gathering Colorado River toads in an attempt to chemically process the 5-MeO-DMT on their skin for recreational use.

“Toads are being systematically removed by poachers to extract their secretions to be trafficked,” Robert Villa, a community outreach assistant at the University of Arizona, told Live Science in an email.

Colorado River toads are already being affected by changing rain patterns, habitat loss, fungal diseases, and pollution, Villa said, and poachers only add to the threat of their conservation.

### The Potential of 5-MeO-DMT

While obtaining 5-MeO-DMT from wild toads is unsafe and illegal, researchers are interested in the potential of synthetic 5-MeO-DMT, which is related to the psychedelic drug DMT.

Compared with more traditional psychedelics such as LSD or psilocybin, relatively little is known about 5-MeO-DMT and how it affects the brain.

“At this point, over 100 people have had their brains scanned during trips on typical psychedelics like LSD and psilocybin,” Dourron explained. “There are no published brain scanning studies of how 5-MeO-DMT works.”

Trip reports of 5-MeO-DMT are often quite distinct from subjective experiences with typical psychedelics. Rather than experiencing classic hallucinations such as fractal patterns, some 5-MeO-DMT users describe experiencing a total “white-out.” They might feel as if they’ve entered a “void” or experienced a sense of nothingness, Dourron explained.

The strange effects of the drug have led Dourron to investigate whether the effects of 5-MeO-DMT stem from similar brain pathways to those impaired in certain types of seizures.

Other researchers are exploring the potential of 5-MeO-DMT as an antidepressant. Early data show that the drug improves depressive symptoms within a day, with improvements lasting at least a week after treatment.

Compared with other psychedelic drugs being explored for their antidepressant properties, such as psilocybin, 5-MeO-DMT’s duration is much shorter, meaning treatment sessions could be completed more quickly.

“5-MeO-DMT is a very interesting substance, but ultimately, I think it likely plays by a different set of rules than other, more studied psychedelic substances,” Dourron said. “Only science will tell us just what this playbook is.”

There Are Lessons From the Nixon Era in Trump’s Attempts to Freeze Spending

Half a century ago, Congress took decisive steps to protect its power of the purse.

During that time, conservatives were wary of allowing presidents to disobey lawmakers’ instructions. This concern underscored a broader debate about the balance of power between the legislative and executive branches.

By safeguarding its financial authority, Congress aimed to ensure that elected officials remained accountable and that the president could not bypass legislative intent.

How older Mainers decide when to downsize, stop driving or ask for help

Sherlyn Morrissette said she was in no condition to make decisions after her husband died three years ago. It was her children who told her she should come to Maine and live near them instead of staying in her home in rural Lyndonville, Vermont. Looking back, she’s very glad they did.

“When you lose a spouse after 56 years, you’re just numb, and you feel like you can’t make decisions,” said Morrissette, 82, who lives at OceanView, a retirement community in Falmouth. “I can’t tell you how much it affects your mind. I was very unbalanced, and I was constantly falling.”

“I think if I stayed there by myself I would have probably become very, very depressed,” she said.

Even though she didn’t decide on her own to move out of her home, Morrissette said she can see many reasons why it made sense for her. She’s a healthy, active, social person who now has many people to talk to every day and a calendar full of activities, including trips to plays, musicals, and Portland Sea Dogs games.

We all could face difficult decisions as we get older, including whether we want to or are able to live alone or whether we want or can afford to live in a senior living community or other facility. Health problems or failing eyesight may force us to give up driving. A desire to plan for the end of life will likely have us considering wills or trusts and health care directives.

Those who work with aging Mainers say one way to start thinking about these decisions is to talk to people who’ve already made them — about what factors they considered or what problems they dealt with.

Paula Hodgdon, 97, taught physical education and coached at the University of Southern Maine. She lived alone in her home in Hollis before moving to Scarborough Terrace last year. She said her family was worried about her living alone, but she wasn’t; she had friends and neighbors who would bring her things she needed, and she felt comfortable there.

But she said she decided to “try” living in a senior living community to see what it was like.

“They thought it would be a good idea for me to come here, but I didn’t really want to do it at first. So they said ‘Just try it,’” said Hodgdon. “After being here, I’ve changed my mind and decided it’s a very good place to be, because they take care of anything you need.”

According to the Maine Health Care Association, there were 1,000 assisted living and residential care centers in Maine as of July, varying in size from a few beds to more than 100. Among the residents of all those facilities:

– 49% were over the age of 85
– 30% were between the ages of 75 and 84
– 15% were between the ages of 65 and 74
– About 7% were younger than 65

Hodgdon’s friend and fellow retired USM professor Jim Pendleton, 93, also came to Scarborough Terrace recently. Health issues had forced him to stop driving a few years ago, and his wife became his driver. But she died last year.

In 2022, about 93% of people 65 and older in Maine had their driver’s licenses, according to a project done by the Maine Council on Aging with data from the Maine Department of the Secretary of State. For people 80 and older, 72% had licenses that year.

Pendleton said he had fallen a few times and decided that it would be better for him not to live alone in his Buxton home. He also didn’t want family worrying about him.

Besides moving into Scarborough Terrace, Pendleton wrote a health care directive so his children would know what sort of care he wants and doesn’t want near the end of life. He’s also given his children his power of attorney.

He said that will make anything that happens to him, including dying, easier and less complicated for his family.

“If you don’t have those kinds of things in place, you just make it miserable for your family,” said Pendleton, who taught geology. “Just because you’re dead doesn’t mean you don’t care about your kids.”

Giving someone power of attorney gives them broad authority to handle all your financial and legal matters, like paying bills or managing investments. An advance health care directive is focused more narrowly, giving someone the authority to make health care decisions and laying out your own wishes on end-of-life care.

Having either document gives a person confidence that someone they trust will be making decisions for them if they can’t, people who work with seniors say. It also means your family will know exactly what your end-of-life wishes are and helps avoid disagreements or court battles among family members.

Morrissette has not given up driving and has no plans to. She’s healthy and has fun at the wheel of her bright blue Audi convertible. She’s also planning to take a trip soon to Antarctica.

Physically, she feels like she could live alone. But being able to live in an active community and see so many people every day has helped raise her spirits and energy.

“I meet a lot of people who have very uplifting attitudes and live life to the fullest,” said Morrissette.

Coinbase, Binance Among Exchanges Targeted for Widened AML Checks by French Regulator: Bloomberg

France is intensifying its scrutiny of cryptocurrency exchanges with expanded anti-money laundering (AML) checks aimed at determining which platforms will be granted European Union (EU)-wide licensing, Bloomberg reported on Friday.

Among the exchanges under review are Coinbase (COIN) and Binance, according to sources familiar with the matter. Since late 2024, the French Prudential Supervision and Resolution Authority (ACPR) has been conducting on-site inspections and has instructed Binance to strengthen its risk controls.

Failure to meet the ACPR’s requirements could jeopardize an exchange’s ability to obtain a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license from France. This license is crucial as it allows firms to offer cryptocurrency services across the entire EU. Companies have until the end of June next year to secure this license.

A Binance spokesperson commented via email: “Engagement with the ACPR is an ongoing component of operating as an AML-registered company and AML framework reviews are a routine part of the ACPR’s regulatory oversight. The ACPR is conducting these checks across dozens of exchanges, as further detailed in their 2024 annual report.”

Neither Coinbase nor the ACPR responded to requests for comment from CoinDesk.

ASTER, HYPE Continue to Drop as Bitcoin Price Stabilizes at $107K: Weekend Watch.

It was another bloody Friday in the cryptocurrency markets, as Bitcoin dumped to a multi-month low (on most exchanges) at under $104,000. The altcoins were smashed even harder, with massive price declines from the likes of ETH, BNB, XRP, SOL, DOGE, and many others.

### BTC Calms at $107K

The overall market-wide calamity began last Friday when BTC dumped from $122,000 to $110,000 or down to $101,000 on exchanges like Binance. It bounced off last weekend and remained above $110,000.

Bitcoin kept climbing at the start of the business week and peaked at $116,000 on Monday and Tuesday. However, it faced an immediate and painful rejection at that point, which drove it south to $110,000. Although that support line held at first, the bears kept the pedal to the metal, and it gave way on Thursday evening.

The landscape only worsened on Friday when Bitcoin slumped first to $108,000 and then below $104,000, marking a three-month low (again, on most exchanges).

After such a substantial collapse, some positive macro news emerged: US President Trump announced that the tariffs he introduced on China last week won’t stand. BTC reacted with an immediate bounce to over $106,000 and has since added another grand.

Nevertheless, Bitcoin’s market cap has slipped to $2.130 trillion, while its dominance over the altcoins stands at 57.3%.

### Altcoins Still Struggle

Although most altcoins have recovered some ground from their lows marked yesterday, the overall picture remains grim.

– ETH is below $3,900 after a minor decline over the last 24 hours.
– BNB has lost the $1,100 support level following a 3% drop.
– TRX, DOGE, ADA, LINK, HYPE, BCH, SUI, AVAX, and HBAR are also in the red.
– XRP, SOL, and XLM managed to post minor gains.

Among the worst performers, COAI has dumped by another 17% in the past 24 hours, followed by AAVE (-5.3%) and ASTER (-5%).

In contrast, ENA surged by 12.5%, followed by TAO, which rose 8%.

The total crypto market cap has recovered to just over $3.7 trillion on CoinGecko but is still down by roughly $500 billion since last Friday.

The cryptocurrency landscape remains volatile, with Bitcoin trying to stabilize amid broad-based altcoin weakness. Investors will be watching closely for signs of next week’s direction.

The secrets to packing fragile items from Paso Robles self-storage

**Expert Packing Tips from River Road Mini Storage to Protect Your Fragile Treasures**

*PASO ROBLES, Calif., Oct. 18, 2025 /PRNewswire-PRWeb* — We all have delicate and fragile items that bring us joy — whether it’s a beautiful hand-blown Venetian glass bowl purchased on vacation, a charming ceramic giraffe snagged for $2 at a local yard sale, or a peacock-patterned dish set bought online. No matter the cost or who gave it to us, these treasures hold a special place in our hearts. When they break, it feels like a piece of us breaks, too.

Rick Runnells, owner of River Road Mini Storage in Paso Robles, shares expert packing tips to help you avoid the heartbreak of discovering cracked or broken items when unpacking after a move or storage.

**Careful Packing is Key**

Packing fragile items carefully with the right materials is essential. Use bubble wrap, packing paper, or foam to cushion your items securely inside sturdy boxes. Proper labeling is equally vital—clearly mark boxes containing fragile items to ensure they receive appropriate handling.

**Safe Handling and Storage Make a Difference**

“Storing boxes of fragile items is just as important as proper packing,” says Rick Runnells. If you are storing these boxes at home, consider dedicating a closet or an enclosed section of your garage exclusively for fragile items. Label the area for added awareness and protection.

When moving, keep fragile boxes separate from other belongings. They should be the last boxes loaded onto the moving van and the first ones unloaded into storage or your new home. If using a storage unit, designate a specific section for these fragile boxes to keep them secure.

At your new place, placing all fragile boxes in one room or a dedicated corner helps keep them safe and accessible. This way, you’ll know exactly where your delicate possessions are and can unpack them carefully at your own pace.
