Indore News: 52% Candidates Take Mining Officer Exam

**Indore (Madhya Pradesh):** Nearly 52 percent of candidates appeared for the Mining Officer exam conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC) on Sunday. Due to the low number of applicants, MPPSC designated only one exam center at SGSITS, Indore.

Out of 625 registered candidates, 325 took the exam, marking an attendance rate of 52 percent. The examination was held under a new syllabus and revised pattern after several years. Candidates found the questions comparatively easy, especially in the general studies section, which covered current affairs, history, geography, economics, and state-specific topics related to Madhya Pradesh.

The second paper tested subject knowledge in geology and mining. This year, the Commission introduced negative marking, with one mark deducted for every four incorrect answers.

The exam lasted from 12 noon to 3 pm, with candidates arriving an hour early. Security measures were strictly implemented and included frisking, biometric verification, and photo identification checks before entry. Officials confirmed that no cases of malpractice were reported during the examination.

Subject experts suggest that the relative ease of the paper may push the cutoff score as high as 70 to 80 percent. Results are expected to be declared within a month, by the first week of November, after the evaluation of OMR sheets.

This recruitment drive by the Department of Mineral Resources was announced for just 10 vacancies.

How Much Did Sonam Wangchuk Win On Kaun Banega Crorepati 9 & What Did He Do With The Money?

Ladakh statehood activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has recently been arrested on charges of inciting a mob through provocative statements, once made headlines for a very different reason.

Back in 2017, the engineer-turned-education reformer appeared on the popular quiz show *Kaun Banega Crorepati* Season 9, hosted by Amitabh Bachchan. Wangchuk reportedly earned Rs 50 lakh from the show and impressed viewers with his game.

Instead of keeping the prize money for himself, Wangchuk donated the entire amount to his school in Ladakh, which is run under the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL). He announced that the winnings would be used for the upkeep and development of the institution. Additionally, Wangchuk planned to invest the prize money in establishing the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL) — a university envisioned to provide hands-on and practical training to the youth.

During the show, Wangchuk was accompanied by his former student, Tsewang Rigzin, who is now a journalist. A documentary on his school was also screened, showcasing girl students playing ice hockey on a rink within the campus.

Wangchuk charmed the audience with his confident responses and entertained host Amitabh Bachchan by delivering the actor’s famous film dialogues in French, Punjabi, and Ladakhi. He even recited verses from Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s poetry. Notably, Wangchuk inspired the character played by Aamir Khan in Rajkumar Hirani’s hit film *3 Idiots*.

### Sonam Wangchuk’s Arrest

However, the celebrated activist now finds himself at the centre of controversy. Sonam Wangchuk has been arrested under the stringent National Security Act (NSA), which allows preventive detention without bail.

Authorities allege that Wangchuk incited violence during ongoing protests in Ladakh demanding statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Following his arrest, he was shifted to Jodhpur. Meanwhile, internet services in Leh were suspended to curb the spread of misinformation.

Wangchuk’s NGO, SECMOL, has also come under scrutiny. The Ministry of Home Affairs cancelled its Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) registration a day before his arrest, blocking it from receiving foreign funding.

The situation continues to develop, raising concerns among supporters and human rights advocates about freedom of expression and the future of activism in the region.

Gauhati University Announces Initiatives To Immortalise Memory Of Zubeen Garg, Including Statue Installation

Guwahati: Gauhati University on Friday announced a series of initiatives to immortalise the memory of Assam’s iconic singer, composer, and cultural icon, Zubeen Garg, who passed away recently, officials said.

In recognition of his immense contribution to music and culture, the University will rename its Centre for Performing Arts and Culture as the **Zubeen Garg Centre for Performing Arts and Culture**. To further preserve his memory, a statue of the legendary singer will be installed, while a coffee table book documenting his extraordinary life and creative journey will also be published.

The University’s Inter-College Youth Festival will now feature a dedicated segment titled the **Zubeen Garg Song**, ensuring that his music continues to inspire generations of young performers.

### Statement From the Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University

Speaking on the announcement, Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University, said:
“Zubeen Garg was not just an artist, he was an emotion that united Assam and gave voice to the deepest aspirations of its people. By renaming our Centre for Performing Arts and Culture in his honour and instituting these initiatives, Gauhati University seeks to preserve his creative spirit and inspire future generations to carry forward his legacy of music, courage, and cultural pride.”

According to Mahanta, through these efforts, Gauhati University reaffirms its commitment to celebrating the life and work of one of Assam’s most beloved cultural icons, ensuring that his artistry and spirit will continue to resonate for years to come.

### Special Investigation Team Formed

Notably, in the wake of the demise of Assam’s cultural icon and popular singer Zubeen Garg, the state government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a comprehensive and transparent probe into the circumstances of his death.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who chaired a high-level review meeting with the Director General of Police, senior CID officials, and the Chief Secretary, earlier announced that the SIT would comprise some of the “best officers of Assam Police” and would work independently with complete professional integrity. He reassured the people of Assam that “no stone will be left unturned” in the probe.

The SIT will be headed by Special DGP (CID) M.P. Gupta, with Rosie Kalita, SSP (CM Vigilance), appointed as the Chief Investigating Officer. Several senior officials, including Additional SPs, Deputy SPs, Inspectors, and Sub-Inspectors drawn from CID and other districts, have been inducted as Additional and Assistant Investigating Officers.

All officers attached to the SIT will remain on the team until the completion of the investigation.

‘Healing and justice’: Stevenson brothers talk hidden hurts, hostilities in today’s political climate

Two brothers, psychologist and educator Howard Stevenson and civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson, held a compelling conversation on race and justice on Thursday at the Fitler Club in Center City.

The discussion, titled “Healing & Justice: A Journey Through Story, Conflict, & Collective Care,” centered around the power of storytelling to address hidden hurts and hostilities in order to unite communities in America’s current political climate. The event was moderated by Robin Smith, a psychologist, New York Times best-selling author, and SiriusXM host.

Howard Stevenson, currently the Constance E. Clayton Professor of Urban Education and director of the Resilience Empowerment Collaborative at the University of Pennsylvania, emphasized the urgency of the moment. “People in this country are stunned and paralyzed about what to do with all their hate that’s coming at them,” he told The Tribune. “We’ve been working for quite a long time at Lion’s Story trying to help people get out of that paralysis.”

Howard added, “When you want to do something, you have a purpose, but you can’t find the courage. We think about healing as a way to get you unstuck. We’re a place where they can start to use their voice and instead of just watching, the hate just wins.”

The event was a part of a fundraiser for Lion’s Story, the nonprofit co-founded by the Stevenson brothers to help individuals and organizations manage identity-based stress and conflict.

Robin Smith stressed the importance of creating safe spaces for truth-telling, especially for Black communities. “The reason I say that so much of truth-telling is being stripped from our communities, and it is being stripped from our country,” she said.

Lisa Nelson-Haynes, executive director of Lion’s Story who joined the organization last spring, highlighted the significance of community voices in the healing process. “You need to get into communities, and really allow them to tell their own story, and all of that, and that they are experts of their own experience,” she explained. “I don’t need to tell their story. If you don’t have racial literacy, you don’t understand what these microaggressions or biases are and don’t have the language for it.”

Bryan Stevenson, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative and Legacy Museum and author of the New York Times best-selling book *Just Mercy*, reminded the audience of the courage Black people showed during Jim Crow and the Civil Rights Movement. He reflected on the new challenges faced during integration. “That was a whole new thing, and we were going into spaces where we knew people didn’t want us. That was a whole different kind of courage that we need to tap into,” he said.

Moderator Robin Smith shared her hopes for the evening. “What I hope most is an inner discomfort with the status quo, that we are not helpless. And that when we believe that we are helpless, we are speaking that into existence.”

The Fitler Club event space was filled to capacity as attendees engaged in this vital conversation aimed at healing and justice through storytelling, conflict resolution, and collective care.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath Distributes ₹89.96 Crore Scholarships To 3.96 Lakh Students, Praises New Education Policy

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday transferred Rs 89.96 crore to 3.96 lakh students during a scholarship distribution program held in Lucknow.

Addressing the public meeting, CM Yogi praised the Centre’s New Education Policy and announced the upcoming launch of the ‘One Nation, One Scholarship’ system. “Education is a fundamental right in our country, and education has been made inclusive through the New Education Policy introduced by Prime Minister Modi in 2020. In the coming times, the ‘One Nation, One Scholarship’ system will also be introduced. Students will receive the scholarship amount with a click as soon as they take admission in the school,” he said.

Taking a subtle dig at the Opposition, CM Yogi claimed that students from Scheduled Tribes did not receive scholarships before 2017. He stated, “More than 4,00,000 students are receiving scholarships today, and this program is organised to ensure they receive scholarships on time. Before 2017, students were often discriminated against, and Scheduled Tribes were not given scholarships in 2016-17, which we distributed after our government came to power. I have received complaints that Scheduled Tribes were not receiving scholarships in some areas because data was not uploaded.”

He further added, “However, we are going to decide to provide scholarships to these students before Diwali. The role of the officials responsible for the delay in scholarships has been determined, and action will be taken.”

Earlier, sharing a post on X, CM Yogi lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, writing, “Education plays a significant role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Under the illustrious leadership of the Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, over the past 11 years, the path to development for the underprivileged has been paved by connecting them with scholarships and fee reimbursement arrangements through excellent and superior education.”

He continued, “On the sacred occasion of Shardiya Navratri, today in Lucknow, under the scholarship distribution ceremony, an amount of Rs 89.96 crore was transferred to more than 3 lakh 96 thousand students. Heartiest congratulations to all students and best wishes for a bright future.”
