Parole denied for sexual predator

Charles M. Bland, 72, who claimed to children he was a professor, doctor and scientist, among other things, before molesting them, has been denied parole. Jenna Wade, coordinator of the Victim / Witness Division of the Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office, said that Bland will not be eligible for parole again until October 2035. On May 8, 2013, Bland was given a 10-year-to-life prison sentence by former Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge W. Wyatt McKay after Bland pleaded guilty to four counts of rape, two counts of gross sexual imposition, 25 counts of pandering obscenity involving minors and one count of illegal use of minor in nudity-oriented material or performance. Bland’s victims were as young as 6, according to the prosecutor’s office. While living at Suburban Trailer Park in Trumbull County, Bland claimed to be a professor, a philosopher, a doctor, scientist and astronomer. He went so far as to print counterfeit degrees and diplomas, which he hung in his run-down trailer. He concocted these lies to gain the trust of his neighbors and gain access to their children. Under these fake credentials, Bland lured unsuspecting neighborhood children into his trailer under the guise of “tutoring” them. Once inside, Bland would use his age and size to violate these youngsters, forcing them to engage in various sex acts, including forced touching, forced oral sex, and digital and vaginal penetration. A search of Bland’s trailer found a nude image Bland personally took of a 6-year-old girl. Assistant Prosecutor Gabriel Wildman, who wrote the parole board in opposition to Bland’s release, said he was pleased with the decision to keep him in prison. Bland will remain in Belmont Correction Institution, with his next parole hearing scheduled for August 2035, according to the prison’s website.

Discussion with defensive coordinator gets Batavia’s Luke Gardner starring role at safety. ‘Just want to play.’

In the offseason, Gardner figured he would be on the sophomore team this fall, seeing that the Bulldogs were loaded at receiver. “I remember it like it was yesterday,” Gardner said. “I was in the weight room working out with my buddies. He came up to me, and I had never really talked to him before. “He asked if I could play safety. I was like, ‘I can do it.’ I just want to play.” Gardner was willing to give it a shot and, boy, are the Bulldogs glad he did. Rita (8-4) at 2 p. m. Saturday for a state semifinal game in Chicago. As the strong safety, Gardner leads the Bulldogs with 86 tackles, picking up his production even more as the playoffs have gone on. He has 27 tackles the past two weeks alone. “With his movement skills, speed and tackling, we thought it was a good spot for him. “He really stuck out over the summer and stuck to it, worked very hard.” It didn’t always come easily, however. “At first in the summer, it was really hard because as a safety, you have to read and keep your eyes right and make sure you’re reading the receivers,” Gardner said. “It took me a long time to understand route combinations and also tackling.” It led to a memorable moment with defensive backs coach Billy Colamatteo during summer camp. Colamatteo challenged Gardner to get tough and want to tackle. “Preston hit the hole,” Gardner said. “That was my first time really laying it down, and since then, I kind of enjoy hitting.” Holm couldn’t have been happier with the move. “We were going around the room talking about the growth that everyone has had this season,” Holm said of Gardner. “He’s one of the ones that really stand out. “He’s out of position. He’s never played safety before. He’s a good tackler, smart, and he’s done a fantastic job.” The Bulldogs utilize their strong safety in the box often, which has suited Gardner quite well. “People don’t usually like defensive backs to have a lot of tackles, but the way our defense plays, our safeties have a lot of tackles,” Holm said. “You have to be able to recognize pass-run quickly and fill your assignments against the run. “He’s become a very sure tackler. He’s done a great job for us.” This is technically Gardner’s first playoff run on varsity as well. He was along for the ride in a reserve role last season, but being in the mix has been a whole different feeling. “It’s definitely been very emotional,” Gardner said. “I didn’t experience the true feelings of the games. Now that I’ve experienced it, I realize how much has to go right for you to win.” He’s not just experiencing it. He’s going to have to be a big part of slowing down an explosive St. “I’ve been getting a lot more confident in my play,” Gardner said. “I know what’s happening. We’ve come a long way and we’ve progressed as a group, so I’m really happy about that.” Paul Johnson is a freelance reporter for The Beacon-News.

County planners reject controversial AI data center proposed near Howell

HOWELL, MI Livingston County planners rejected a proposal for a massive $1 billion data center campus for an undisclosed tech giant to power artificial intelligence and other computing technologies. The county Planning Commission voted unanimously Wednesday, Nov. 19 to recommend the Howell Township Board deny rezoning more than 1, 000 acres in the historically rural community north of Ann Arbor. The commissioners’ unanimous vote comes a day before a large crowd of concerned residents are expected to pack Howell High School’s auditorium for the township board’s meeting, which is set for 6: 30 p. m. Thursday, Nov. 20. Township officials are expected to consider putting a moratorium in place to pause for six months any consideration or approval of data centers, as they further investigate whether there is a need for local regulations. The project continued to face pushback from many residents at Wednesday’s county planning meeting, where local residents shared concerns and frustrations. The crowd gave county planners a standing ovation for recommending the rezoning be denied. County planners also voted unanimously to recommend the Howell Township board deny a proposal to add a definition for data processing centers to the local zoning ordinance. Data center developer Randee, LLC, with its consulting firm Stantec Consulting Michigan, is working on behalf of a U. S.-founded and based Fortune 100 technology company, which they have not identified. Some residents are calling for more transparency, questioning why the tech giant behind the project has not been disclosed to the public. Several residents took issue with “tech billionaires” looking to take up land in Michigan’s rural communities. The data center developers are asking the township to conditionally rezone land north and south of Grand River Avenue to research and technology uses on the condition it would only be used for a data center. The land in question is south of Marr Road and north of Warner Road, and east of Owosso Road and west of Fleming Road. The properties are currently zoned for agricultural, single-family residential, and neighborhood service commercial uses. The firm is also eyeing adjacent land in neighboring Handy Township, which could bring the total project area closer to 1, 700 acres. Opponents are concerned about data centers’ impacts on water resources and electricity rates, and many in the crowd decried the potential loss of the area’s rural character and desire to preserve farmland. Howell resident Lyle Devine doubts that the data center would not negatively impact drinking water for his family. “Can you tell me for sure the water will be safe (to drink) for my kids?” Devine said. Gary Burkhart spoke about how there are unused or underutilized industrial sites in Michigan that are ready for redevelopment. “Why would we need to rezone anymore of our farmland?” Burkhart said. Other residents worry about the rise of artificial intelligence itself, expressing fears that many jobs will be lost. The rezoning request “is not consistent with the overall goals, objectives, and future land use intentions of the Howell Township Master Plan,” Scott Barb, the county’s planning director, said. Barb determined the data center proposal is also not consistent with the county’s vision, which calls for the preservation of agricultural lands. The developers have promised the data center would generate tax revenue and jobs and there would be opportunities to fund schools, infrastructure projects and community services. Detroit attorney Michael Vogt, who represents the data center developers, told the crowd they have heard people’s concerns, and they have offered restrictions and conditions that go beyond what local communities normally require. “We heard concerns about potential infrastructure improvements,” Vogt said. He said the developers have offered to reimburse all costs to the township for infrastructure, including water and electricity, roads and emergency services. Data center buildings would take up no more than 50% of the site, Vogt said. Buildings would be setback no less than 400 feet around the entire site. The developers have also promised to donate about 125 acres for open space conservation or parkland. He also said the developers support Howell Township approving a moratorium, because it would give the township time to consider establishing local regulations. Concerns over water usage are “incredibly serious,” he said. The developers are investigating the feasibility of using “dry cooling technology” to minimize water usage. The initial ask was for the data center to use as much as 1 million gallons of water a day. However, actual water usage would depend on what type of cooling system they pursue. The developers would also cover the cost if nearby residential wells ran dry. “We know that’s not going to happen, and put your money where your mouth is,” Vogt said. In addition, DTE Energy has indicated it will have capacity to power the proposed data center, though the exact power requirements have not yet been specified. The proposed data center also faced opposition from the Howell Township Planning Commission, which voted unanimously Tuesday, Sept. 23, to recommend the township board deny the rezoning and also deny a proposal to add a definition of data centers to the local zoning ordinance. They determined the data center proposal does not conform with the township’s master plan and vision for agricultural preservation.

Powell scores 25, Adebayo adds 20 and Heat surge late to defeat short-handed Warriors 110-96

MIAMI (AP) Norman Powell scored 25 points, Bam Adebayo returned to score 20 and the Miami Heat pulled away late to top the extremely short-handed Golden State Warriors 110-96 on Wednesday night. Former Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins scored 17 and Kel’el Ware grabbed 16 rebounds for Miami, which outscored Golden State 38-22 in the fourth quarter. The Warriors, at the end of a six-game, nine-day trip, were without their four highest-paid players: Stephen Curry (ankle), former Heat forward Jimmy Butler (back), Draymond Green (illness) and Jonathan Kuminga (knee), a group making about $162 million this season. Al Horford, who isn’t playing back-to-backs and appeared in Golden State’s loss at Orlando on Tuesday, also sat out. Brandin Podziemski scored 20 for Golden State, which got 19 The Warriors gave up 23 turnovers that Miami turned into 34 points 20 more than Golden State scored off Miami’s 14 giveaways. The teams combined to shoot 38. 4%, the second-worst shooting game in the NBA so far this season. Toronto and Atlanta combined to shoot 37. 4% in the Raptors’ 109-97 win on Nov. 7. Adebayo missed Miami’s six previous games with a toe injury. The Heat are still without guard Tyler Herro, though he could make his season debut in the coming days after offseason ankle surgery. The Warriors got into a 20-4 hole, their largest first-quarter deficit of the season. But Miami scored only 19 points in the next 12 minutes and Golden State chipped away, taking its first lead at 60-59 on a basket by Post midway through the third. Then it was Golden State’s turn to cool. The Warriors led 74-69 late in the third, before Miami went on a 21-4 run to pull away. Up next Warriors: Host Portland on Friday. Texas A&M hosts Senior Day against Samford

No. 3 Texas A&M football shocked the Southeastern Conference and the 12th Man on Nov. 15 when it overcame a 27-point deficit to complete the largest comeback in school history against South Carolina. Sitting atop the AP Top 25 at third in the country for five consecutive weeks and ranking the same in the College Football Playoff committee’s watchful eye, the Aggies are riding high on their undefeated record toward the end of their schedule and into a possible spot in the SEC Championship Game and the playoffs. But what follows that Hallmark-movie ending against the Gamecocks is a date with the 1-10 Samford Bulldogs out of the FCS’ Southern Conference this Saturday, Nov. 22. “We talk a lot about playing to our standard regardless of opponent,” coach Mike Elko said in Monday’s press conference. “It’s not something we’ve been good enough at. So this is an opportunity for us to take a maturity step and go out there and play the game at the level that we’re capable of playing it, regardless of who we’re playing.” A lot of analysis can be done over the late-game scares A&M has inflicted on the Aggie faithful this season namely against Notre Dame, Arkansas and South Carolina but none of those can drown the lofty expectations of success that fans have for the Maroon and White against the Bulldogs. Nearly all projections point toward a lopsided score in the Aggies’ favor. But the game holds more importance than just moving onto an 11-0 record and a rivalry weekend against No. 17 Texas; it represents possibly the last time the seniors on the roster will compete at Kyle Field if A&M doesn’t host a first-round playoff game. “There’s going to be a lot of kids walking across that field for the last time, and that’s a memory that they’ll take with them forever,” Elko said. “ . It’s an opportunity for them to end their senior season undefeated at home, and that hasn’t happened around here in a long time.” One of the many players departing Aggieland after this season, multi-talented graduate student offensive lineman Trey Zuhn III has left an astounding impact on the program during his tenure donning maroon and white. “He’s what you want an Aggie to be,” Elko said. “For him to come back again, be a captain again, for him to be as consistent as he is, as tough as he is. He plays through pain, he plays through injury. He’ll play through anything. This place means an awful lot to him.” No matter the opponent, Elko has preached making plays in critical moments throughout the season. “The thing that makes seasons successful is your ability to make those plays in those moments to win football games,” Elko said. “And I think that’s what this team is doing.” The SEC leader in sacks who ranks second in the country at 11. 5 redshirt senior defensive end Cashius Howell showed off his ability to be that playmaker during A&M’s second-half comeback against South Carolina. On the Gamecocks’ last third-down effort, he sacked redshirt sophomore quarterback LaNorris Sellers and then secured the tackle on the next play, forcing a turnover on downs. “That play he made at the end of the game to win that football game,” Elko said. “That is an elite-level play. That’s just unbelievable awareness, unbelievable feel to close space and close the gap on the quarterback before he could get going and then an unbelievable feel to not yank the horse collar as he was kind of getting his hand around it.” Facing one of the most dominant defenses in the country, which ranks No. 1 in third-down conversion percentage and total sacks, the Bulldogs have their bowls full this weekend under the high-pressure atmosphere in the confines of an SEC stadium. But defense isn’t the only thing to strike fear into the Dogs’ hearts, as the Aggies’ offense ranks sixth in passing yards per completion with 14. 93 and is tied for 14th in points per game at 37. 1. This 1-7-in-SoCon-play Samford squad is staring down the barrel of its season in its last matchup in a classic david-and-goliath situation at Kyle Field bright and early at 11 a. m. on SEC Network+.

Bulls’ Coach Billy Donovan Makes Huge Coby White Announcement

The Chicago Bulls ended their losing streak in a thrilling win over the Denver Nuggets on Monday night. That was coming off a double-overtime loss on the road against the Utah Jazz the night before. The loss to the Jazz saw Coby White make his season debut for Chicago. With Coby White making his season debut against the Jazz, it only made sense for him to sit out on Monday during the second night of a back-to-back. The former first-round pick was on a minutes restriction during Sunday’s game, and he exceeded his allotted time on the court in the 2-OT loss. The Bulls will play their final game of a short three-game road trip on Wednesday night against the Portland Trail Blazers, and White will be active. The better news is that head coach Billy Donovan announced White’s restriction has been upped to 26-28 minutes, per K. C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network. Coby White Made His Presence Known in Season Debut White was not supposed to play 30 minutes in his season debut. However, the flow of the game called for him to exceed that a little bit. However, Donovan felt comfortable having him on the court, despite the fact that he missed the first 11 games with a calf injury. Still, White was able to score 27 points, grab 14 rebounds, and dish out eight assists. 14 of White’s 27 points came from the free throw line, which means the injury did not slow down his aggressiveness. The 25-year-old shot 5-for-14 from the field and 3-for-8 from three-point range. There was definitely some rust in terms of getting the right shot and knocking them down. It was also evident that White’s legs were getting tired as the game continued past the fourth quarter. Still, the stat line he produced should have been enough to help Chicago leave with the win. Heading into Wednesday, the Bulls are hoping White can have a similar game. If the game does not go into overtime, White should not play more than 28 minutes. It is a long season, and calf injuries are running rampant in the NBA right now. Chicago should be as cautious as they can be with White as he ramps back up to being a starter. Bulls Have a Chance to Win Five of Next Six Games Beating the Nuggets was a big confidence booster for the Bulls. They were on a five-game losing streak, and the season, although early, seemed to be slipping away from them. However, the win has proven Chicago still has it in the tank to string together some wins. Looking ahead at the schedule for the rest of November, the Bulls have a chance to string together plenty of wins. Of their six games remaining, five are against teams below . 500, including Wednesday night’s game in Portland. Additionally, the final four games of the month are against the Charlotte Hornets, New Orleans Pelicans, Indiana Pacers, and Washington Wizards. These four teams have a combined record of 6-49 on the season. If the Bulls can finish the month 4-2 or 5-1, it would put them in a great position headed into December.
