Kubernetes and AI bond tightens around hardware, observability challenges

The world is circular. Kubernetes made developers forget about infrastructure and helped enable AI. Now, AI is making them remember. Hardware—which cloud relegated to the back room—is now in the spotlight again.

At KubeCon + CloudNativeCon this week, attendees kept facing the same conclusion when it came to Kubernetes and AI: you can’t scale generative AI, inference jobs, or agentic systems with an outdated hardware stack dragging behind.

AI training will be the responsibility of the few, but demand for AI inference engines will come from the masses. Inference workloads are everywhere. They’re in customer-facing apps, developer tools, and are latency sensitive, cost sensitive, and hardware hungry.

How Are Vendors Responding?

Hardware-agnostic pipelines are now the new grail—build once, run anywhere. “We’re now in a place where we have to consider 400-gig networking because the models need stuff like that,” said Joep Piscaer, analyst at TLA Tech B.V.

Piscaer and Ned Bellavance, independent consultant and technical educator, spoke with theCUBE’s Rob Strechay and Savannah Peterson at the KubeCon + CloudNativeCon NA event during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the future of Kubernetes and AI and how Kubernetes is increasingly optimizing for AI.

Vendors and Technologists Rethink the Stack for AI

Cloud providers, open-source projects, and platform teams are all lining up to make inference workloads less stressful for infrastructure.

Analysts noted that Google Cloud’s Google Kubernetes Engine and other platforms are becoming hardware-agnostic, capable of running AI on GPUs, TPUs, or edge devices. Frameworks such as SynergAI demonstrate Kubernetes orchestrating AI across heterogeneous hardware, reducing quality-of-service violations by 2.4×.

“Inference is going to happen on hardware that people are touching, but it’s going to be Kubernetes built into all this stuff intuitively,” Peterson said.

In other words, the old “throw GPUs at it” no longer cuts it. What’s also needed are fine-grained control, hardware scheduling, network fabric, and accelerator resource management.

Infrastructure builders are now thinking more about optimizing for AI from scratch. If hardware is coming back, then the eyes and ears of the system have to evolve too.

AI is Placing Heavy New Demands on Observability

To illustrate, Strechay related his experience at this year’s Infrastructure as Code Conference: “The last question we got was around, ‘How do I do observability for prompts?’ I think the complexity of AI and so many moving parts has everybody coming to the table because everybody’s freaked out,” he said.

Bellavance echoed this uncertainty: “We have these golden signals we normally observe for: ‘What’s my CPU utilization? What’s my response times on things?’ Now there’s a new metric we have to watch, which is the prompt and also the response. That’s going to be tough, and people need to start instrumenting for that.”

Platforms such as OpenTelemetry and eBPF-powered tooling are emerging, tracking not just CPU or memory, but prompts, responses, token usage, and retrieval accuracy.

AI-native observability for AI systems enables in-production troubleshooting and performance optimization.

Kubernetes Adapts for AI’s Second Arc

AI is forcing Kubernetes to evolve. It’s no longer just about containers. Inference workloads, agentic applications, and massive model deployments demand GPU scheduling, accelerator-aware orchestration, and high-speed networking.

The Certified Kubernetes AI Conformance Program launched by CNCF at the conference sets standards for GPU/TPU scheduling, telemetry, and cluster orchestration specifically for AI workloads.

Google Cloud’s GKE Pod Snapshots reduce inference startup times by up to 80%.

Back in the “before times,” we asked: “What’s after Kubernetes?” Early Kubernetes contributor Kelsey Hightower has said the platform was designed to last about 20 years—it turned 11 this year.

The present question isn’t “what’s after K8s?” but rather “what happens with K8s when AI becomes the driving workload?” The answer is unfolding at KubeCon: Kubernetes is becoming the central nervous system for the AI stack, with clusters optimized for inference, smarter scheduling, predictive scaling, and advanced observability.

Welcome to the second arc, according to the analysts.

HKES holds entertaining competition in “Survivor”-themed fall banquet

Dozens of people gathered in the Mandela Room on Sunday for an entertaining Hong Kong Exchange Square (HKES) banquet themed “Survivors.”

Founded in 1994 at Binghamton University, the HKES aims to bring people together to foster a better understanding of Hong Kong culture through social and cultural events. Sunday evening was filled with engaging challenges, audience participation, performances, food, and auctions.

The room was festively decorated with red, blue, and green banners, and many attendees took photos in front of the “HKES Survivor EST. 1994” backdrop. Fake leaves and flames adorned each table to replicate the “Survivor” theme, complemented by creatively designed brochures available to guests.

Energy simmered as guests mingled, enjoying food catered by Mein Bowl, which offered made-to-order Asian cuisine. Attendees eagerly anticipated a game where contestants would “outwit, outplay, and outlast” their opponents—an homage to the famous “Survivor” tagline.

Katty Ho Fang, vice president of HKES and a junior majoring in accounting, explained how the “Survivor” theme reflects the organization’s values. “The fall banquet stands as our most important tradition, and this year’s ‘HKES Survivor’ theme demonstrates teamwork and resilience combined with entertaining competition,” Fang said via email. “The event aims to provide enjoyment for all attendees through performances, games, and a lively atmosphere. It highlights the hard work of our E-Board members, who crafted a night focused on community pride. The event fosters family bonds and friendships while creating shared memories.”

This year’s game featured six contestants competing in various challenges. Leo Chung, fundraising chair and a sophomore majoring in computer engineering, and Izzy Young, a fall representative and freshman majoring in business administration, hosted the event.

Challenges included quick games like telephone charades, “What’s in the Box,” and a blindfolded eating contest. After each contest, the winners prevailed while the others faced dramatic voting rounds, where one contestant was “voted out” by their peers, echoing the “Survivor” experience.

The first game, telephone charades, emphasized teamwork. The six contestants split into two groups, each aided by two audience members. A prompt was acted out by one person and then passed down the line, with the last person guessing the original prompt.

The second challenge, “What’s in the Box,” tested individual skill. Contestants reached blindly into a box for ten seconds, guessing the item inside—ranging from cold sausage to aluminum foil. The contestant with the most correct guesses earned immunity from the following voting round.

Between games, the E-Board members performed a variety of dances, including a women’s hip hop dance, a cultural dance, and an all-men’s routine. Chung and Katherine Chan, social chair and a sophomore majoring in biology, performed a duet, while Iris Lin, a sophomore majoring in chemistry, played the piano.

The dances were lighthearted, with many guests laughing at the unexpected explicit moves in the boys’ routine, while the girls’ dance impressed with synchronized hair flips. Lin’s piano performance featured beautiful adaptations of Cantonese folk songs that captured the essence of Hong Kong’s cultural beauty. Guests joined together, illuminating the room with phone flashlights as they swayed to the music.

Fang discussed the extensive preparation behind the event’s seamless transitions between activities. Starting planning in June, the E-Board held multiple rehearsals to coordinate lighting, sound, prop changes, and performance cues. “The smooth operation depends on various hidden elements, including stage setup, game timing, and clear roles for participants and spectators,” Fang noted. “Our members’ success demonstrates their ability to work effectively as a team.”

After the blindfolded eating contest, freshman mechanical engineering major Irene Li emerged as the final victor. Li shared her winning strategy during intermission, explaining she aimed to befriend as many fellow contestants as possible to stay safe during voting rounds. However, she acknowledged that betrayal was inevitable in the game’s competitive spirit, where only one survivor prevails.

An auction towards the evening’s end, along with continued voting, kept the audience engaged through performances and contests. Guests held onto raffle tickets received at the start of the night, cheering as their numbers were called by the hosts. Prizes were generously sponsored by Moshi, CHICHA San Chen, LAFCO New York, and Uncle Lou.

The final voting round allowed the audience to select the ultimate winner from the three remaining contestants via a Google Form. The night concluded with a heartfelt speech from Christopher Chin, HKES president and a senior majoring in business administration. He thanked attendees and praised the E-Board’s efforts in organizing this year’s unique fall banquet.

With warmth and gratitude, the E-Board exchanged flowers and the audience applauded the performers, organizers, and the victorious survivors. Chin expressed hope to “continue to be blown away” by the E-Board’s dedication and creativity.

“To my amazing E-Board, you guys are the HEART and SOUL of HKES,” Chin wrote in the event brochure. “Through countless days of decorating, you not only pulled through but made every minute more fun than the last. I cannot express how appreciative I am that you spent your weekends creating something so exciting!”

The “Survivors” banquet was a memorable celebration of teamwork, culture, and community spirit, leaving lasting impressions on all who attended.

XAG/USD consolidates near four-week high

Silver (XAG/USD) is currently consolidating its strong gains registered over the past four days, oscillating within a range during the Asian session on Thursday. The white metal is trading around the $53.35–$53.40 region, just below a nearly four-week high touched on Wednesday, and appears poised to appreciate further.

From a technical perspective, the recent solid rebound from the vicinity of the 50-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) and the subsequent upward move favor the XAG/USD bulls. Additionally, oscillators on the daily chart have been gaining positive traction and remain well away from overbought territory. This validates a constructive outlook for silver in the near term.

As such, some follow-through strength beyond the overnight swing high—around the $53.65–$53.70 region—looks likely, with a potential move towards reclaiming the $54.00 round figure. A sustained break above $54.00 would set the stage for an extension of the positive momentum, aiming to retest the all-time peak near the $54.85 zone, last touched in October.

On the downside, any meaningful corrective slide below the $53.00 mark could attract buyers near the $52.45 intermediate support level. This support should help limit losses for XAG/USD close to the $52.00 round figure. However, failure to defend these support levels could trigger technical selling, potentially dragging silver down to the $51.30–$51.20 area.

Overall, the technical picture for silver remains bullish, with key support levels in place and room to run toward recent highs. Traders will be watching closely for confirmation of follow-through strength in the coming sessions.

Chaim Bloom reflects on Mookie Betts trade more than 5 years later

Chaim Bloom is settling into his new role as the St. Louis Cardinals’ president of baseball operations ahead of a busy offseason. However, the 42-year-old baseball executive will also be remembered as a central figure in an infamous chapter of Red Sox history.

Appointed as Dave Dombrowski’s successor as Boston’s chief baseball officer in October 2019, one of Bloom’s first orders of business with the Red Sox was to determine the future of franchise star Mookie Betts. Unable to come to terms on a long-term extension with Betts, Bloom and the Red Sox ultimately traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers in February 2020. The trade also included David Price going to the Dodgers, with Boston receiving Alex Verdugo, Jeter Downs, and Connor Wong in return.

The move proved disastrous for Boston. Betts went on to win three World Series titles, earn four All-Star selections, and secure several top-five finishes for the National League MVP over his six seasons with the Dodgers. Among the players Boston received, only Connor Wong remains on the Red Sox roster as a backup catcher. Alex Verdugo was eventually traded to the New York Yankees after the 2023 season. Jeter Downs appeared in just 14 career games with Boston and last played in MLB in 2023.

Speaking to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo at the GM Meetings in Las Vegas, Bloom expressed that his stance on trading Betts has not changed despite Betts’ incredible success with the Dodgers.

“It’s never fun to take a player of that caliber in the prime of his career that I had seen right in my face as an opponent for so many years with the Rays, then be on the same side as him very briefly and end up moving him,” Bloom said. “Obviously, there was a bigger picture than that deal. That deal wasn’t about the valuation of the talent. It was just about where the organization was.”

Bloom was eventually fired in September 2023 after the Red Sox posted a combined 267-262 record during his four seasons and made only one postseason appearance. Still, Bloom maintains an affinity for Boston, especially with several players drafted under his tenure—such as Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Connelly Early—emerging as key pieces for the Red Sox in 2025 and beyond.

“It’s cool to see them, in a lot of cases, start turning into and in other cases, continuing to be the players we thought they could be,” Bloom said. “Even in just four years in that organization, I developed a lot of really strong relationships and friends for life. Some people that I care about that I was really happy to see enjoy pieces of that success.

“I’m proud of a lot of the things we did in Boston. It has been exciting from afar to see that work come to fruition. Bigger things continue to be ahead for that franchise.”

Paul Skenes Wins NL Cy Young As Speculation About Him Being A Yankee Appears

Paul Skenes was named the unanimous winner of the National League Cy Young Award on Wednesday night. Since achieving this feat with the Pittsburgh Pirates, speculation has begun about when he might leave a franchise that has not made a playoff appearance since 2015 and has not won a playoff series since 1979.

Among the teams frequently mentioned as potential destinations for Skenes in the near future are the New York Yankees. This narrative gained traction on the second day of the MLB General Manager meetings in Las Vegas, when NJ.com published a story highlighting a Pirates teammate’s remarks about Skenes’ apparent dream of playing for the Yankees someday.

So far, Skenes’ only experience with the Yankees was a brief two-inning cameo on the final Saturday of the 2024 season at Yankee Stadium. During that outing, he struck out both Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, while his gymnast girlfriend Livvy Dunne cheered him on. This came at the end of Skenes’ rookie season, during which he won Rookie of the Year over Jackson Merrill while playing for a Pirates team that finished with 76 wins. At the time, there was no speculation about his future, but it’s the kind of story likely to resurface occasionally unless the Pirates either lock him into a long-term contract or decide to trade him.

Though it’s not quite like Gerrit Cole’s well-known Yankees fandom—demonstrated as a child in 2001 with a sign at the World Series—the rumors surrounding Skenes have become prominent enough for Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington to address them directly.

“What we’re going to focus on is just how do we win games with him in a Pirates uniform,” Cherington told reporters. “I have a ton of respect for the Yankees but we’ll just focus on what we need to do.”

What Cherington and the Pirates need to do is build a competitive team around Skenes. Despite winning the Cy Young Award, Skenes recorded only 10 wins—tied for the fewest ever for a starting pitcher to win the award in a full season. He joined Jacob deGrom as the only pitchers to win the Cy Young with just 10 wins.

DeGrom’s 2018 season saw him finish 10-9 with a 1.70 ERA and 269 strikeouts while pitching for a Mets team that won 77 games and had a payroll of roughly $150 million. Skenes went 10-10 with a 1.97 ERA and 216 strikeouts, pitching about 30 fewer innings, for a Pirates team that won 71 games on a significantly smaller payroll.

Run support—or the lack thereof—played a major role in Skenes’ record. In all 10 of his losses, the Pirates scored three runs or fewer, including four shutout losses. In 19 of his 32 starts, Pittsburgh scored three runs or fewer. This lack of offensive production resulted in a 17-15 record in games he started and contributed to the Pirates finishing 71-91, marking the 14th time since 1992 that Pittsburgh has lost at least 90 games.

These figures echo deGrom’s 2018 struggles with run support. The Mets were 14-18 in deGrom’s starts that year, with three runs or fewer scored in 20 of his 32 starts—including seven of his nine losses.

The stark difference between the two pitchers, however, was payroll. The Pirates operated with a roughly $87 million payroll in 2024, which matched their final number of that year and was two million less than their 2019 payroll—the year Gerrit Cole would have become a free agent with Pittsburgh had he not been traded to Houston after the 2017 season.

Talk about Skenes’ future departure from Pittsburgh and links to the Yankees is expected to continue until something definitive happens. The Pirates have been consistently among the league’s lowest payroll teams, finishing in the bottom five 16 times since Bob Nutting purchased the franchise in 2007.

“In a nice way, it’s really simple because what matters most to [Skenes] is what matters to us,” Cherington said. “Win more games. That’s the focus because that’s what is going to be most important to him. What probably gives us the best chance to keep him in Pittsburgh for longer is winning games, and that’s what we need to do anyway.

“So in a way it helps simplify it and focus it. My conversations with him, the only thing we talk about is winning and how to do that.”

For now, the Pirates may increase their payroll incrementally, but it remains to be seen if that will be enough to make them contenders in a league where 83 wins were required to reach the playoffs, as was the case with the Cincinnati Reds.

Until Pittsburgh demonstrates a payroll closer to the league median, the buzz surrounding when Paul Skenes will leave will persist. However, it seems unlikely that his departure will occur within the next year.
