Mark Sanchez in hospital after Indianapolis stabbing — now under arrest. What we know

Former NFL quarterback and current Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez has been arrested by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) following a violent confrontation in downtown Indianapolis that left him hospitalized with stab wounds. The 38-year-old, best known for leading the New York Jets to consecutive AFC Championship appearances, is now facing three misdemeanor charges.

### What Happened to Mark Sanchez in Indianapolis?

The IMPD confirmed that officers responded to a disturbance involving two men shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Saturday in an alley near the Indiana Statehouse, within the bustling Wholesale District nightlife area. According to police, the altercation escalated from a verbal argument to a physical confrontation, leaving one man with lacerations and Sanchez with injuries consistent with stab wounds.

Detectives later reviewed surveillance footage of the incident and arrested Sanchez on suspicion of:
– Battery resulting in injury
– Unlawful entry of a motor vehicle
– Public intoxication

All three offenses are classified as misdemeanors under Indiana law. The IMPD clarified that no additional suspects are being sought and added that the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final decision on formal charges.

### Is Mark Sanchez Still Hospitalized?

Yes. Police confirmed that Sanchez remains hospitalized and is in stable condition. As of Saturday evening, he had not yet been booked into a detention facility.

Earlier in the day, Fox Sports issued a statement expressing gratitude for the medical care Sanchez has received:

> “We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time.”

### Was Sanchez Scheduled to Broadcast a Game This Weekend?

Sanchez had been slated to serve as part of the broadcast team for Sunday’s NFL game between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium. However, Fox Sports has since replaced him with fellow analyst Brady Quinn, according to Front Office Sports.

### What Do We Know About the Scene of the Incident?

By Saturday evening, locals and NFL fans visiting downtown Indianapolis were still discussing the early-morning altercation. Witnesses reported dried blood visible on the pavement along the 300 block of West Washington Street, near Loughmillers Pub & Eatery and Pronta Pizzeria, where the confrontation reportedly occurred.

Despite the overnight violence, nearby restaurants and businesses were operating as usual.

### Who Is Mark Sanchez?

Mark Sanchez was a standout collegiate quarterback at the University of Southern California (USC) from 2006 to 2008. He led college football in passing yards and touchdowns before being drafted fifth overall by the New York Jets in 2009.

Sanchez guided the Jets to back-to-back AFC Championship Games in his first two seasons and compiled a 33-29 record during his tenure with the team. He also had stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington before retiring from the NFL in 2019.

In 2021, Sanchez joined Fox Sports as a television analyst, quickly becoming a familiar presence on national broadcasts.

In a show of support, the New York Jets posted to X (formerly Twitter):

> “Sending our thoughts and love to Mark Sanchez and his family. Hoping for a speedy recovery. #6”

### Has Downtown Indianapolis Seen Recent Violent Incidents?

This latest case comes amid growing concern about crime in downtown Indianapolis, particularly after a mass shooting over the July 4 weekend that left two teenagers dead and five others injured.

The stabbing involving Sanchez has reignited scrutiny of safety conditions in the city’s nightlife districts, though police have not suggested any broader connection between the incidents.

### What Happens Next?

Sanchez remains under hospital care as detectives finalize their investigation. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the evidence before determining whether to proceed with formal charges.

For now, the former NFL quarterback’s future with Fox Sports remains uncertain, as both the broadcaster and his representatives have declined to comment beyond their initial statement.

“Montreal would do everything in its power to obtain Sidney Crosby”

The Canadiens aren’t necessarily the favourites to win the Stanley Cup, we agree, but if Sidney Crosby were to come to town, it would be a game-changer.

Without necessarily being the favourites, I wouldn’t dare put my money on Martin St-Louis’ team. In any case, Darren Dreger told the Barn Burner podcast yesterday that Montreal would do whatever was possible to get Crosby in town.

Many teams would move heaven and earth to get the Penguins’ captain, but with the Habs, it’s probably even truer. Crosby grew up in Halifax and was a Habs fan. Kent Hughes has what it takes to move with Kyle Dubas without sacrificing his future.

The 87, who earns $8.7 million for two more seasons, not only has a salary that makes sense but would also fit in really well with Montreal’s young team bank. That’s mainly Dreger’s point, by the way.

Crosby wouldn’t be around for a thousand years, but his stint — which is only two years — would be so beneficial for everyone. It would help Nick Suzuki at the hockey level; he’d have support at the center position but also at the leadership level.

Crosby’s arrival would not only represent talent and leadership: it would also offer an exceptional marketing asset and become a powerful argument for management to attract future free agents. No one would say no to 87 in Montreal. Unless Ivan Demidov or Lane Hutson are given away, but that’s not going to happen.

**Overtime**

Of note: The Jays crush the Yankees and lead the series 1-0. Really? Good. It wasn’t all Core 4 in Toronto. Not the year of the East.

Saints activate Taysom Hill and Foster Moreau ahead of Sunday’s game against the Giants

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Saints have moved versatile quarterback Taysom Hill and tight end Foster Moreau from the team’s Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list to the active roster ahead of Sunday’s home game against the New York Giants.

The roster moves, announced Saturday, increase the likelihood that both players, who are recovering from major knee injuries sustained late last season, could make their 2025 debuts for the winless Saints (0-4) against the Giants (1-3).

Hill, who had been listed as a tight end over the past two seasons, had his designation changed back to quarterback last week—the position he began his NFL career playing as a backup in 2017 after starring at BYU in college.

Saints first-year coach Kellen Moore has emphasized that Hill will continue to play a versatile role on offense and special teams, just as he has in previous seasons. Hill is expected to contribute in various positions, potentially lining up as a tight end, running back, or receiver, as well as regularly participating on the punt and punt coverage units.

Despite these changes, Spencer Rattler, who has lost all 10 of his career NFL starts (six as a rookie last season), will remain the starting quarterback.

Foster Moreau, who was injured late in the fourth quarter of the Saints’ 2024 regular-season finale, had a solid previous season with 32 catches for 413 yards and a team-high five touchdown receptions.

In other roster moves, the Saints elevated linebacker Eku Leota from the practice squad to the active roster, placed wide receiver Trey Palmer on injured reserve, and waived rookie tight end Moliki Matavao. Additionally, defensive tackle John Ridgeway III was downgraded to out for Sunday’s game.

**Shreyas Iyer Becomes India’s New Vice-Captain in ODIs: Key Stats**

*By Gaurav Tripathi | October 4, 2025*

In a significant leadership reshuffle, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Shubman Gill as the new captain of the Indian ODI team, taking over from Rohit Sharma. Alongside this change, Shreyas Iyer has been named the vice-captain for the ODI format, chosen ahead of contenders like KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah.

### Iyer’s Role in the Leadership Group

Shreyas Iyer’s appointment as vice-captain formally inducts him into the leadership group for India’s white-ball cricket. Although he had previously served as a stand-in leader, this new role entrusts him with a key responsibility to assist Shubman Gill in leading the team during future 50-over matches. Iyer’s maiden leadership assignment in an official capacity will begin with the upcoming ODI series against Australia, starting on October 19.

### Recent Performances Boost Iyer’s Case

Iyer’s recent form, particularly in India’s successful Champions Trophy campaign earlier this year, significantly strengthened his claim for the vice-captaincy. He amassed 243 runs in five matches at an impressive average of 48.60, including two fifties. Although his strike rate of 79.41 was on the lower side, it reflected the challenging batting conditions in Dubai, where matches saw modest totals. Notably, Iyer was the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament, behind New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra who scored 263 runs.

### Stellar Numbers in ODIs

This year, Iyer has been in exceptional form across eight ODI matches, accumulating 424 runs at an average of 53.00, with four half-centuries. Overall, in his ODI career spanning 70 games, he has scored 2,845 runs at an average of 48.22 and a strike rate of 100. His tally includes five centuries and 22 fifties, underscoring his consistency and class in the format.

### Impressive Record in ICC ODI Events

Iyer’s performance on the big stage has been remarkable. In the 2023 Cricket World Cup, he scored 530 runs, finishing as the tournament’s seventh-highest run-scorer with an average of 66.25 and a strike rate of 113.24. He became the first middle-order batsman to cross 500 runs in a single World Cup edition. Adding his Champions Trophy 2025 exploits, Iyer has accumulated 773 runs in 16 ICC ODI matches, averaging 59.46, including five fifties and two centuries.

### IPL 2025 Heroics

Apart from his international performances, Iyer led Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 final as captain. He enjoyed a stellar season with the bat, scoring 604 runs at an average of 50.33. His campaign featured six half-centuries and a remarkable strike rate of 175.07. Iyer also smashed 39 sixes during the season—the highest by any captain in a single IPL edition—highlighting his aggressive yet consistent batting style.

With his impressive track record and leadership qualities, Shreyas Iyer now embarks on a new chapter as India’s ODI vice-captain, poised to play a pivotal role alongside Shubman Gill in shaping the future of Indian white-ball cricket.

### Leadership in IPL 2025

The campaign was remarkable for Iyer with the bat, as he piled up 604 runs at an average of 50.33, including six half-centuries. He also struck 39 sixes—the most by any captain in a single IPL edition. His strike rate of 175.07 ranked third among batsmen scoring 600-plus runs that season.

A’ja Wilson and Dana Evans lead Las Vegas Aces past Phoenix Mercury 89-86 in WNBA Finals opener

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Aja Wilson and Dana Evans each scored 21 points as the Las Vegas Aces edged the Phoenix Mercury 89-86 in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals on Friday night.

Wilson contributed 12 of her points over the final 14 minutes, helping the Aces hold on as Phoenix’s Satou Sabally missed a long 3-pointer with 2 seconds left that would have tied the game. Game 2 is set for Sunday in Las Vegas.

Evans led a dominant Aces bench that outscored the Mercury’s reserves 41-16. Reserve Jewell Loyd added 18 points for second-seeded Las Vegas, while starter Jackie Young contributed 10 points. Wilson also grabbed 10 rebounds, and Chelsea Gray led the team with 10 assists.

For the fourth-seeded Mercury, Kahleah Cooper scored 21 points. Sabally added 19 points, and Alyssa Thomas closely missed a triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists.

Cooper’s 19 first-half points were just one shy of her playoff career high for a half. Interestingly, her personal best of 20 points in a first half also came against the Mercury, during Game 3 of the 2021 Finals when she played for Chicago. Cooper’s five 3-pointers in the first half surpassed her previous high of four made threes in a game.

If this opening game was any indication, this WNBA Finals — the first-ever best-of-seven series — is set to be tightly contested throughout. The largest lead was nine points, and the game featured 12 lead changes and nine ties.

The Mercury threatened to take control on several occasions, only for the Aces to respond with timely runs. In the closing moments, with Phoenix down by one point and 24.6 seconds remaining, Thomas went to the free-throw line but missed both attempts.

On the other end, Young was fouled with 13.5 seconds left and calmly sank both free throws, sealing the final margin and giving Las Vegas the Game 1 victory.
