JB Pritzker could be a nuisance for Democrats | Jim Fossel

It wasn’t covered much in the news. Billionaire Illinois Gov. and presidential hopeful, JB Pritzker, came to Maine the Friday before to participate in a rally in Portland for Maine Democrats. The other guest speakers? Well, the vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, Malcom Kenyatta, and Harry Dunn, a Capitol Police officer who was present on Jan. 6 and ran unsuccessfully for Congress in Maryland, losing in the primary. Clearly, and with all due respect to Dunn for his service, Pritzker was the big draw here. Pritzker is an interesting figure. He’s a big-state governor who’s made national news by resisting President Trump at every turn. In some ways, he’s similar to California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who’s also clearly running for president in 2028, and who’s also made a name for himself opposing Trump. Both of them run solidly Democratic states, neither of them ever even try to work with Republicans in the legislature, and now they’re part of the hashtag resistance. In that, they’re somewhat similar to our own Gov. Janet Mills, who achieved national notoriety by opposing Trump and who’s pushed through multiple partisan budgets. Pritzker has some key differences from Newsom, though. He’s older, not quite as attractive or eloquent and he hasn’t reached out to the other side like Newsom has. He’s also, as mentioned above, a billionaire, with an estimated net worth of almost $4 billion. His extended family owned the Hyatt hotel group. Like Trump, Pritzker expanded his inherited wealth, starting a private venture capital firm. Before entering politics, he was a Democratic donor. In other words, he’s exactly the kind of guy Sen. Bernie Sanders has been railing about in his “Fight the Oligarchy” tour: a billionaire who benefited from inherited wealth. He’s not exactly an oyster farmer or a logger, to be sure; instead, Pritzker has spent his life behind a desk, growing the money with which he started. In a capitalist society, there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. Some people will be born with more advantages than others. That’s actually true in pretty much all societies thus far, in fact. In the Soviet Union, there were apparatchiks, loyal members of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union who got special privileges. Both parties in the United States have their own versions of this today. One example is the megadonor. We saw the influence of megadonors in last year’s presidential election, when their pressure led to Joe Biden withdrawing from the race after his disastrous debate performance. These donors quietly exert influence behind the scenes, in exchange for either favors for their industry or corporations or some plumb job, like an ambassadorship. One would expect that, with all of their anti-establishment rhetoric, Democrats these days would be pivoting away from these people, but the fact is that money still talks. They’re still more than willing to accept the help of billionaires, regardless of whatever populist slogans might spill out of their mouths to placate the masses these days. This is not just a hypocrisy of Donald Trump and the populist Republicans, nor is it solely contained to establishment Democrats, either. Go ahead and ask Graham Platner and Troy Jackson if they were at the Pritzker fundraiser or outside it, protesting. There’s plenty of hypocrisy to go around in politics, on both sides. As a make-believe populist, though, JB Pritzker, offers one of the most galling recent examples. Until the very moment that he decided to make the switch from giving money to running for office, he’d done nothing but make and spend money his whole career. Then, when he decided he’d rather be in office than write checks to candidates, Pritzker started financing his own campaigns. Now, suddenly, he’s potentially presidential material all because he started out with financial advantages. Whether it’s Mitt Romney or Donald Trump, Republicans have often embraced wealthy presidential candidates. That’s nothing new. What’s new here is a Democratic Party torn between diametrically opposed factions, the populists on one side and the insiders on the other, facing the prospect of one of their own billionaires running for president. If Pritzker falls flat in the primaries, it will probably be a sign of his own ineptitude, not of populists rejecting billionaires. If he succeeds, it will be an instance of immense hypocrisy from a party that criticized President Trump (and President Bush, for that matter) for his wealth. Regardless, I think it will be gloriously entertaining.

Lane Kiffin’s daughter seen at LSU booster meeting as coaching saga swirls

The sweepstakes for Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin is the best reality show in college sports. His daughter Landry attended the Bengal Belles luncheon an LSU women’s booster club meeting at L’Auberge Casino Hotel in Baton Rouge on Thursday, according to Nola. com, amid reports that Kiffin is in the mix for head coaching jobs at high profile programs LSU and Florida. Landry attended the luncheon with her boyfriend, LSU linebacker Whit Weeks, and his LSU linebacker brothers, West and Zach, along with their mother, Erin. A video making rounds online shows Landry walking around at the event. The 20-year-old Landry, a sophomore at Mississippi, made their relationship public in a post on Instagram in September. Weeks, one of the nation’s top linebackers, is in his third season with LSU. Landry wore a cream colored tank top and matching pants. Other women are seen carrying folders that read, “The Baton Rouge Clinic AMC” and “Geaux Tigers.” Landry supporting Weeks makes sense, but the timing of it adds intrigue to the rumor mill surrounding her father. The coaching carousel has centered around Kiffin after Florida fired Billy Napier in October followed by LSU parting ways with Brian Kelly a week later. The schools reportedly flew Kiffin’s family to Baton Rouge and Gainesville for visits last week. The coach reportedly wasn’t on either trip. According to The Advocate, Kiffin’s family flew to Baton Rouge on Monday and toured the city before visiting Gainesville on Sunday. During a Tuesday appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Kiffin denied a report by The Athletic that Ole Miss has given him an ultimatum to decide on his future, and emphasized that his focus is on the 10-1 Rebels. The No. 6-ranked Rebels will likely lock in a spot in the College Football Playoff with a win over Mississippi State next week. Kiffin became the head coach at Ole Miss in December 2019, after he served as the offensive coordinator at Alabama under then coach Nick Saban’s staff 2014-16.

Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Remake Set To Launch In March 2026

Ubisoft has finally released its latest financial report, following a short delay to an accounting muck-up. In it, we found out that the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake is launching before the end of March, 2026. But according to the report and some new information, the Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag might be joining it. The financial report from Ubisoft lists several titles will be released before the end of the company’s Q4 period, which is March 31st. One of them is an “unannounced” title. Well, according to InsiderGaming, that unannounced project is the Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag remake. More importantly, though, InsiderGaming says that they understand the game “is scheduled to release the week of March 23rd.” At this point, the Black Flag remake has become an open secret within the industry, so it really has just become a cause of when and not if. At first, it seemed like the project would be a fairly straightforward remaster of one of Assassin’s Creed most beloved entries, but recent leaks have suggested it’s a much more involved remake. Back in September, for example, a website claimed to have got sent details of what to expect in the remake, and also stated they were hearing about a March 2026 release. According to the information, the remake will be running on the same engine as Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, will have the modern-day sections taken out and will even add in RPG elements to make it more like the modern Assassin’s Creed games. I love Black Flag, so some of these changes are baffling. Making it more like the modern games in the series is the last thing I could possibly want from the remake, so my hype for the remake has been tempered. Still, I am interested to see what it ends up being.

How to separate hype from reality in microreactors

What we’ve learned from years of hard work is that there are five things that must be true for anyone the Department of War, potential customers, or investors to be able to quickly separate a demonstration test by a mature reactor program from a science project. A test must use commercially-relevant fuel. Many prototypes use fuel that’s convenient for a laboratory, not for deployment. To be meaningful, a test must use fuel with the correct enrichment level and prototypic form factor while also linking fuel cost and supply directly to what the end user can expect in production. Anything else risks building an uneconomic or unscalable design. A test must be at least 90% of commercial capacity. If your test doesn’t have a plan to achieve at least 90% of the power level your first customer requires, you aren’t really proving your system. Scaling up later often introduces new physics and thermal challenges that render early data meaningless. A credible demonstration tests the actual system under realistic power conditions. A test must operate at full power for 150 hours or more. Achieving zero-power critical confirms that the reactor’s reactivity mechanisms, sensors, and control systems perform as designed. It’s the point where modeling meets reality, where engineers prove the physics actually work in hardware. Then, once you’re there, you need to be able to operate at full temperature and full power for at least 150 hours (or at least 1/200th of the product’s lifetime) to demonstrate reliability and endurance. A short, partial-power test might show that something turns on, but a sustained run proves that it can also keep working safely and consistently. A test must demonstrate all safety features. This should be table stakes. The nuclear industry is not just in a tech race; it’s also in a trust race. Every safety mechanism, passive and active, must be verified through data, not just simulation. A company that treats this step lightly is one you should not trust to work with nuclear fuel. You must have capital five to 10 times a commercial reactor’s cost to test (and even more to scale it). Building a test reactor is enormously expensive. For starters, any player in this space needs to be able to produce a detailed bill of materials with actual supplier quotes for all items to show that you understand how much a reactor is going to cost a customer. And that’s just for the test reactor. The next step, production, requires access to capital at a factor in scale. At Radiant, we’ve spent years working to ensure we’ve answered these and many other questions as we prepare to operate our Kaleidos Demonstration Unit at the Idaho National Laboratory’s Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments facility next year. Kaleidos is a full-scale, fully fueled test reactor, designed from the start for mass production, transportability, and compliance with both DOE and Nuclear Regulatory Commission frameworks. THE DAWN OF THE TRUMP NUCLEAR RENAISSANCE Janus represents an important moment for advanced nuclear: a chance to bring defense and industry closer together in rethinking how energy resilience is achieved. But progress will depend on holding every participant, old and new, to the same rigorous standards. Nuclear energy is not an app or a prototype that can be “patched” after deployment. It’s a technology that wins the trust race only through results. For all the excitement around new entrants and new projects, the measure of success remains the same: a reactor that operates safely, reliably, and at scale. Rita Baranwal, Ph. D., is the former U. S. Department of Energy assistant secretary for nuclear energy and the former chief technology officer at Westinghouse. She is now the chief nuclear officer at Radiant.

Hailey Bieber and Zoë Kravitz Offer Two Different Takes on Fall’s Suede Coat Trend

In West Hollywood, 55° is chilly enough for Hailey Bieber and Zoë Kravitz to break out their best fall outerwear. On November 20, the It girls reunited at-where else?-Sushi Park, their shoulders cloaked in coordinating suede coats. The duo were probably celebrating Bieber’s upcoming birthday (she turns 29 on Saturday) early with an intimate get-together at the celebrity hot spot. We’re not sure if they coordinated their dinner outfits beforehand, or if they’re simply that aligned on the biggest trends of the season. Each arrived wearing a classic brown suede coat-Bieber’s a warm-toned tan, Kravitz’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it chocolate brown. The Rhode founder’s was slightly longer, featuring a double-breasted bodice, shoulder epaulettes, and a monochrome belt. The actor, meanwhile, went a seemingly simpler route, with black buttons and oversize lapels as its only embellishments; the sleek hem stopped above her knees-a full foot higher than Bieber’s. Even beyond the suede coats, Bieber and Kravitz’s dinner selects were cut from the same cloth. The former paired hers with black silk trousers and a crop top in the same color, plus The Row’s Liisa Pumps (which feature an itty-bitty kitten heel) and Saint Laurent’s leopard-print Bea Bag. Bieber’s 10-carat engagement ring and a Mercedes Benz baseball cap finished her look on a L. A. girl note. Saint Laurent Bea YSL Leopard-Print Tote Bag in Calf Hair and Leather The Row Liisa Kitten Two Heel in Leather Kravitz arrived in a cool-toned take on the black-and-brown combination, layering her chocolate coat over a black long-sleeve and matching trousers. (Zoom in and you’ll see their subtle velvet textile.) Leather ballet flats peeked out beneath each elongated hem. Kravitz also turned to The Row for accessories-specifically, the brand’s beloved Park Tote in the Smoked Taupe colorway. (She was photographed carrying it around Rome earlier this month, too.) In fact, Bieber owns the same $1,450 bag, except the small, black version. A crimson red wool scarf (an accessory she’s been seen wearing while out with Harry Styles)-brightened Kravitz’s otherwise neutral set. The Row Medium Park Tote Bag in Leather This isn’t their first time in near-matching ensembles: In late September, they both styled butter yellow at the Saint Laurent Spring 2026 show. Even their oversize windbreakers matched the other star’s energy. Scandal-Plagued Miss Universe Pageant Ends With New Controversy

A contestant who staged a walkout at a pre-pageant event after being publicly berated by an official has been crowned Miss Universe leading some to question if the award was a “make-good” move. Miss Mexico, Fatima Bosch, was named the winner at a ceremony in Thailand on Friday. Ms. Bosch, a devout Catholic, appeared emotional and made the sign of the cross on stage shortly after being crowned. Thai pageant organizers Nawat Itsaragrisil had confronted Ms. Bosch in front of other contestants at an event a few weeks ago to complain that she wasn’t posting promotional content on her social media. He insulted her and allegedly called her “dumb.” When she defended herself, Mr. Itsaragrisil called security and warned other contestants that they could be disqualified if they supported Ms. Bosch. Ms. Bosch and several contestants left the event anyway and the pageant later condemned Mr. Nawat’s actions and he stepped back from his leadership role for the pageant. Some pageant fans claimed on social media that the drama helped Ms. Bosch win. “That was a mockery,” one commenter wrote. Another wrote, “The fraud of history!” One judge quit the pageant a week ago claiming the event was rigged. The Lebanese-French composer Omar Harfouch is threatening to file a corruption complaint with the New York attorney general’s office claiming a secret vote was held to pre-select 30 finalists without the involvement of the judges. Another judge quit hours later but didn’t mention any possible scandal. Former French soccer star Claude Makelele cited “unforeseen personal reasons” for his abrupt exit. The Miss Universe Organization refuted Mr. Harfouch’s claims but another judge Natelie Glebova said on social media after the event that she would not take part in the competition again unless the pageant returned to using an accounting firm to deliver sealed results. Mr. Harfouch spoke out again after the pageant to reiterate his claims of fraud. “Miss Mexico is a Fake winner,” Mr. Harfouch said in an Instagram post. ” I Omar Harfouch declared yesterday exclusively on the Americain HBO, 24 hours before the Miss Universe final, that Miss Mexico would win-because Miss Universe owner Raúl Rocha is in business with Fatima Bosch’s father.” The questions about judging were just the latest incidents to plague the beauty pageant. Miss Jamaica fell offstage during a preliminary evening gown round on Wednesday and was hospitalized for unspecified injuries. Thai police also investigated alleged promotion of online casinos as part of the event, which would be illegal in the country.
