‘Frozen 3’: Kristen Bell Has Seen Script, Says Cast Begins Production ‘Soon’

Winter is coming. Kristen Bell has revealed that the cast of “Frozen 3” will “soon” begin production on the highly anticipated third installment of the hit animated movie musical franchise.

Although Bell, who voices Anna, hasn’t heard any of the new songs for “Frozen 3,” she disclosed that she has seen the script. “That’s all I can say. I’m under lock and key,” she explained, adding some insight into the script development process.

“It’s all mostly like concept stuff in the beginning like, ‘Here’s where we think it should go,’” Bell said. “That’s the one great thing about Disney — it goes through a thousand filters, not to be diplomatic, but because everyone’s going to add something different. That’s why the movies play so well because they hit every single mark; nothing has been missed.”

“Frozen 3” is slated for release in 2027. Visual development art unveiled in August 2024 offers a glimpse into the film, featuring Elsa (Idina Menzel) on a white horse and Anna on a brown stag.

The original “Frozen” was written and co-directed by Jennifer Lee alongside Chris Buck. The Oscar-winning animated feature, as well as its 2019 sequel “Frozen II,” are set in the fictional kingdom of Arendelle and feature a voice cast led by Bell, Menzel, Jonathan Groff as Kristoff, and Josh Gad as the lovable snowman Olaf. The first “Frozen” premiered in 2013, followed by the sequel six years later.

I caught up with Bell on Thursday night at the “Nobody Wants This” Season 2 premiere at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. The show, which follows two sisters who co-host a podcast, features a guest appearance by Leighton Meester, wife of Bell’s co-star Adam Brody, in its second season.

When asked about her husband Dax Shepard potentially appearing on the show, Bell was candid. “He probably ‘never’ will,” she said. “He likes podcasting,” referring to Shepard’s popular series, *Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard.*

“But it’s still acting and there’s a whole thing that comes along with that. It’s like you have to do hair and makeup, memorize the lines, and then you’re there all day,” Bell continued. “He’s so happy and content with his career. Roofman Aims High

**Roofman**

Putting aside the fact that the early 2000s serve as a nostalgia-trip backdrop—which makes me feel old and sad indeed—purporting to be “a true story,” as this movie does, is often cause for concern. It might be a function of my innate formalism or ongoing, probably misplaced umbrage at the paucity of original screenplays being brought to life, but the blurred line between recorded and recreated events can be problematic.

Hypocritical, I know, as some of my favorite movies are lightly fictionalized relitigations of contemporary events. The heart of the problem might be in the frequent overreliance on the audience’s memory, which becomes a shortcut to bypass the hard work of imagination and craft.

Fortunately, *Roofman* comes from Derek Cianfrance, a “don’t make ’em like they used to” sort of filmmaker with a humanist streak whose lineage would seem to run back to Cassavetes and Capra. I can’t call myself a completist of his work (a little shameful, given that he only has a handful of director credits), but I’ve been an admirer since *Blue Valentine* (2010), which cemented Cianfrance as an artist insistent on naturalistic intimacy, both in terms of aesthetic and performance.

With *The Place Beyond the Pines* (2012), he broadened the scope of his work with an ambitious, multigenerational crime story that may not, ultimately, live up to its own grandiosity. Still, it’s a vivid, often transfixing work, defined by still beauty, heart-wrenching performances, and breathtaking, whirlwind action sequences.

Maybe more to the point, the narrative driving it draws deeply on themes of oppressive systems of power and people actively resistant to that oppression. In plain language: criminals. But Cianfrance is more interested in inner light, desperation, and all of that than he is in labels.

That sensibility is ideally suited to the fictionalization of the story of Jeffrey Manchester (Channing Tatum), a hard-luck case who would eventually come to be known as the Roofman. As the movie opens, we see Manchester hacking his way through the roof of a North Carolina McDonald’s. We learn, soon enough, that this had become something of a trademark, as he successfully robbed between 40 and 60 of the fast food joints (among others) during a multi-year spree.

To paraphrase a cop on his trail, Manchester is probably a genius, but also pretty dumb. A U.S. Army veteran, survival specialist, and keen observer, Manchester—as Tatum portrays him—has fallen into the socioeconomic pit that, 20 years ago, we hardly knew the depths of.

Opportunity and earning potential limited by his past and his proclivities, he turned to robbery to provide a better life for his growing family. And it worked until he got caught. Perhaps partially because he was, by all accounts, too nice for a life of crime.

But his practicality, training, and resistance to captivity kick in, and he soon enough finds a hidey-hole behind the bikes in a Toys ‘R Us, where he hacks the security system and takes up residence.

At first, sleeping under a Spiderman blanket and living on peanut M&Ms is something of a dream come true, but eventually Jeff succumbs to the need to venture out and becomes entwined with a Toys ‘R Us employee named Leigh (Kirsten Dunst), her family, and her church. It’s a dangerous move, to say the least, but it speaks as much to the man’s innate humanity and humaneness as it does to simple boredom.

No good deed going unpunished and all things coming to an end, though, our protagonist eventually realizes the scene is still too hot for him to stick around, and a complicated situation becomes wildly entropic.

Without the steadfast empathy of a director like Cianfrance and the consummate expressiveness of an actor like Tatum (who I don’t think gets his due as one of the great performers of deep sadness), this could be Lifetime movie pap. But presented as it is, with such intimacy, care, and kindness, it expands within itself: a caper movie turned romantic comedy turned exegesis on the notion of justice.

It moves beyond its own scenario to illuminate the hearts of its characters, even giving Peter Dinklage’s dickish store manager Mitch a minor moment of transcendence.

Even though it could be mired in hopelessness, *Roofman* moves deftly from beat to beat on a current of beautiful, muted optimism that speaks to the potential inborn goodness of the species. And in a moment when that impulse seems more obscured than ever, that is, as Carver put it, a small, good thing.

The much-anticipated Diwali releases, **Thamma** and **Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat**, are just days away, and the excitement across the trade, industry, and audiences is palpable. As with every major festive clash, the battle for screens has intensified.

Bollywood Hungama has learned that the first round of this tussle between the distributors of both films has already begun.

### EXCLUSIVE: Thamma vs Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat Screen-Sharing Battle Begins

The makers of the Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer **Thamma** have reportedly demanded **all shows** in single and two-screen cinemas for their release.

A trade source informed Bollywood Hungama, “*Thamma*, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, is being distributed by PVR Inox Pictures. Its distributor-partner in the Mumbai circuit, August Entertainment, has sent a mail to cinemas in the territory outlining their screen-sharing requirements.”

According to the mail, August Entertainment has requested:

– All shows in single-screen cinemas and two-screen theatres.
– 12 shows in three-screen multiplexes, meaning 100% showcasing on two of the three screens, plus one or two shows on the third screen.

The mail further specifies show requirements for larger multiplexes as follows:

– 15 shows in four-screen theatres
– 18 shows in five-screen cinemas
– 21 shows in six-screen multiplexes
– 24 shows in seven-screen multiplexes
– 27 shows in eight-screen multiplexes
– 30 shows in nine-screen multiplexes
– 33 shows in ten-screen theatres

It is important to note that this move has come directly from August Entertainment, which is handling the release of *Thamma* in the Mumbai circuit. How distributors in other regions respond, and whether they follow suit with similar demands, remains to be seen.

### Exhibitors Express Reservations

Exhibitors have voiced concerns about the aggressive screen-sharing demands. One exhibitor told us,
“We would definitely want to show *Thamma* as it looks exciting. But single-screen cinemas should also be given a chance to play *Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat*. In fact, it’s the single-screen theatres where the Harshvardhan Rane film can score big time.”

They added, “Let’s not forget that the Marathi film *Premachi Goshta 2* and the Gujarati film *Chaniya Toli* are also slated for release this Diwali. Some cinemas would want to accommodate these films as well. Hence, we hope a solution can be found.”

Another exhibitor remarked,
“The mail from August Entertainment mentions that the rule exists only for non-PVR, non-Inox, and non-Cinepolis cinemas. We feel it’s not fair and it should be uniform for all cinemas.”

### Trade Expert Weighs In

A trade expert commented,
“Just a few weeks ago, during the *Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1* vs *Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari* clash, the makers of *Kantara* asked for 100% shows in single-screen, two-screen, and three-screen cinemas. Even in theatres with four screens and more, they demanded nearly 80-90% of showcasing. At least, the distributors are being more reasonable in the case of *Thamma*.”

We want to state that no other banner can legally make the said film. Our IP lawyers are replying to the concerned trade associations and are taking all necessary steps to validate and protect our legal rights.”

Additionally, the studio shared the official trademark certificate (Application Number 1662053, Class 41), listing Lata Mohan Iyer as the proprietor, substantiating their claim to the title.
