Three takeaways from Kentucky volleyball’s SEC Tournament quarterfinals sweep over Auburn

No. 1 seeded Kentucky volleyball (23-2, 15-0 SEC) can now look forward to seeing action in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament after a quarterfinal sweep against No. 8 seeded Auburn (17-11, 7-8) 3-0. The match saw complete domination from the Wildcats, with Auburn only posing a real threat in the third set, where Kentucky prevailed 25-22. In every aspect of the game, it’s easy to discern that Kentucky has set a strong precedent for the run they will take in the tournament. Here are three key takeaways from the match against Auburn that summarize Kentucky’s strong showing. Eva Hudson unsparingly fuels offensive attack- Senior Eva Hudson has been no stranger to headlines this season for Kentucky, and her practically perfect performance against Auburn has been the leading story out of Sunday’s match. Hudson finished with a 13-kill, no-error performance against the Tigers. With four terminations in the opening set, she aided in giving Kentucky multiple scoring runs, including a 5-0 that drew Auburn to call a time out, and was a cornerstone to the offensive performance. Freshman Kassie O’Brien has also been instrumental this entire season, and was huge against the Tigers. O’Brien currently ranks No. 14 in the NCAA for assists per set at 10. 54, pairing with her total 875 assists on the season. Against Auburn, O’Brien finished with 42 assists to round out at 14 assists per set in the match. Leading the kill count on the afternoon was junior Brooklyn DeLeye with 15, followed by Hudson and then redshirt junior Lizzie Carr, who put up eight terminations. The team hitting percentage ended in 0. 349, with 106 total attack attempts. Kentucky’s dominate defense- Kentucky and its ability to defensively excel, especially in generating digs, was completely apparent against Auburn. O’Brien and libero Molly Tuozzo both lead the team in digs, with 10 apiece. Coming in second was Molly Berezowitz with nine, followed by Hudson with eight and DeLeye with seven. The Cats also finished the game with six total blocks which beat out Auburn although being named as the best in the SEC statistically in blocking. Kennedy Washington and O’Brien lead amongst both teams in involvement in blocks, with three each, followed by Asia Thigpen and Carr with two apiece. Kentucky’s defense is not only sustained by its defensive specialists, but also gets its hitters in on the action to help sustain gameplay and depth. Against Auburn, the team limited the Tigers to only garnering a 0. 168 hitting percentage. Leading the Tigers in kills was Liz Markovska with 12 yet she only achieved a 0. 086 hit percentage. Craig Skinner finally has won a match in the SEC Tournament- The SEC Tournament has not been held since 2005, which also happened to be Kentucky Head Coach Craig Skinner’s inaugural season with the Wildcats since being named head coach in 2004. In that first, and only, game of the SEC Tournament 20 years ago, Kentucky fell to Arkansas. Now on par with the record that the 2025 SEC Coach of the Year holds during his tenure, which includes six other SEC Coach of the Year titles, Skinner can round out his resume with an SEC Tournament win. It should be easy to ascertain that Skinner will get his second, and maybe even third tournament wins paired with a championship title to round out his 21st year with the Wildcats. During Sunday’s match, the head coach looks as confident as ever as he sat (yes, sat) on the sideline that his team has every ability to make it far in the tournament. Only time will tell if Kentucky volleyball will be the team to win the tournament after its 20 year hiatus. Kentucky’s next showing will be against No. 4 seeded Tennessee on Monday, Nov. 24 to compete for a spot in the finals. The match is set to start at 6 p. m. EST.

Kam Williams settling into his role, but Mark Pope wants more

On the same day Kentucky basketball played Tennessee in the Sweet 16 this past March, they landed a commit in the transfer portal in Kam Williams from Tulane. A sharpshooter with the Green Wave last season, Williams initially struggled through the Wildcats’ exhibition games and first couple of regular-season matchups.

However, a five-point performance at Louisville on Tuesday, which included a 3-pointer, may have put him on track to become the player Kentucky fans believe he can be.

Williams spoke after Kentucky’s 99-53 victory over Eastern Illinois on Friday night about the role he envisions for himself this season.

“Make 3s and play defense. If I’m not hitting 3s, do something else,” Williams said. “I can’t really be upset when I’m missing shots, because I can contribute in other ways on defense. I can still bring energy.”

On Friday night, Williams made two 3-pointers while also contributing two rebounds, an assist, and a steal. For the season, he has accumulated 13 points and 12 rebounds. He is shooting 5-for-12 from the field, including 3-for-10 from beyond the arc, but has been hotter recently — going 3-for-5 from deep over his last two games.

Head coach Mark Pope shared that he hoped the team would be further along in terms of defining their identity at this point in the season. Regarding Pope’s comments on players embracing their “special sauce” and unique skill sets to love their game, Williams responded:

“Really just staying in myself, not trying to do anything outside of what I was brought here for,” he said. “Everybody has a role. NBA players have a role. Trying to step out of your role is where mistakes and accidents happen.”

Following Kentucky’s loss to Louisville, Pope expressed pride in Williams’ effort and emphasized his hopes for the sophomore’s continued improvement.

“I have the same conversation with Kam every single day, and that is about him being more aggressive, more assertive, and more physical,” Pope said.

With Jaland Lowe out, Kentucky will undoubtedly need Williams to step up as the season progresses.

Senate Approves Bipartisan Deal To End 41-Day Shutdown

The Senate approved a government funding package to reopen the federal government Monday night, despite objections from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and a majority of Democrats. Lawmakers voted 60 to 40 in favor of the legislation, with eight Democrats joining Republicans to support the measure. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul was the lone Republican to vote “no,” citing the measure’s insufficient spending cuts.

Democratic Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Tim Kaine of Virginia, Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, and Dick Durbin of Illinois voted “yes” on the legislation, bringing an end to the 41-day shutdown standoff. Independent Maine Sen. Angus King, who caucuses with Democrats, also supported the funding package.

The bipartisan shutdown package will fund the government through the end of January and advance a slate of appropriations bills that will fund the Departments of Veterans’ Affairs and Agriculture, the legislative branch, and military construction for the current fiscal year. In return, Senate Republicans have committed to holding a vote on extending enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies slated to expire at year’s end and to rehire federal workers laid off during the shutdown.

President Donald Trump told reporters in the Oval Office Monday that he will abide by the terms of the deal, calling it “very good.” The successful vote brings Congress one step closer to ending the record-breaking shutdown. However, the House of Representatives must approve the legislation before President Trump can sign the measure into law.

The final vote came after the same group of Democratic caucus members advanced the stopgap bill on Sunday night in a notable break with Schumer and House Democratic leadership. The defecting senators argued that the shutdown’s pain for Americans had become too great and that the minor concessions secured from Republicans were sufficient.

“Many of my friends are unhappy. They think we should have kept our government closed indefinitely,” Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, the second-ranking Democrat who supported the shutdown deal, said on the Senate floor Monday. “I cannot accept a strategy which wages political battle at the expense of my neighbor’s paycheck or the food for his children.”

“It’s become clear after six weeks of the shutdown that the strategy of shutting down the government and forcing the Republicans to talk about the ACA wasn’t working,” King said in a video posted to social media Sunday night. “The shutdown wasn’t achieving its goal, and it was at the same time hurting a lot of people.”

The group of seven Democrats and King voted to advance the funding package on Monday evening despite scathing criticism from their Democratic colleagues, left-wing activists, and the party’s base.

Fetterman told the Daily Caller News Foundation Monday that more than eight Democratic caucus members supported the Senate deal but were afraid to publicly back the legislation. “There were plenty more than just the eight that wanted to vote [yes], but they were afraid,” Fetterman said.

“What has worked in the past is not working now,” Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin, who voted against the government funding package, told reporters Monday regarding Schumer’s strategy during the shutdown. “We need to meet the moment, and we’re not doing that.”

Slotkin and a large chunk of congressional Democrats slammed the shutdown deal as insufficient for failing to secure an ACA subsidy extension. Though Senate Majority Leader John Thune has pledged to hold a vote on an extension bill of Democrats’ choosing in December, Republicans overwhelmingly oppose a clean extension.

Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn told reporters Monday that a planned vote on a Democratic ACA bill has “no chance” of passing.

Though a number of senators briefly held up the shutdown package Monday, every member ultimately consented to fast-track the legislation to a vote on final passage.

“The American people have suffered for long enough. Let’s not pointlessly drag this bill out,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune said on the Senate floor Monday. “Let’s get it done, and get it over to the House, so that we can get this government open.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson urged lawmakers Monday to return to Washington to vote on the spending measures later this week. Due to Congress observing Veterans Day on Tuesday, the earliest the House could vote on the legislation is Wednesday.

“And as of Sunday, nearly half of all domestic flights and U.S. flights were either canceled or delayed. It’s a very serious situation,” Johnson told reporters. “So, I’m saying that by way of reminder, I’m stating the obvious to all my colleagues, Republicans and Democrats in the House. You need to begin right now returning to the Hill. We have to do this as quickly as possible.”

**Death Toll in Louisville UPS Plane Crash Rises to Nine, Search Efforts Continue**

The death toll from Tuesday night’s horrific UPS plane crash in Louisville has risen to at least nine, with more casualties expected as search efforts continue, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced Wednesday morning.

“This is going to be a tough day for Kentucky after yesterday’s deadly plane crash,” Gov. Beshear wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “The number of those lost has now risen to at least nine, with the possibility of more.” He added that, at a reunification center, 16 families have already reported loved ones still unaccounted for.

A “significant” search and rescue operation was underway overnight and continues this morning, according to Beshear. His office is scheduled to provide an update during a press conference at 11:30 a.m. ET.

**Tragedy Strikes at Muhammed Ali International Airport**

The accident involved UPS Flight 2976, which was carrying three crew members and 50,000 gallons of jet fuel. The Hawaii-bound plane reportedly lifted off from the runway with one wing on fire before flipping on its side and crashing to the ground at Louisville’s Muhammed Ali International Airport around 5:15 p.m. Shocking video from the scene shows the aircraft exploding in a massive fireball.

**Community and Company Respond**

In a statement, UPS said it was “terribly saddened” by the accident and offered “heartfelt thoughts” to everyone involved. “We will work tirelessly with state and local authorities on response efforts,” the global shipping and logistics company stated.

Authorities urge anyone with missing family members connected to the incident to contact the reunification center for assistance. Updates will continue as new information emerges from ongoing search and investigation efforts.
